3 2 nd Sunday in Ordinary Time Today s selections from Sacred Scripture tell us about the tender compassion of our God. In the first reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah, we hear language that is tender, passionate and definitive. The Lord says to the people of Israel and to us that we will not be called forsaken. Our land will not be called desolate. Rather, the Lord wants to call us delightful and loved. In the selection that we read from Paul s First Letter to the Corinthian Church, St Paul teaches us that the Spirit gives each of us different gifts, such as teaching, knowledge, healing, or amazing faith. We are not given these gifts solely for our own benefit, but to help further the work and the mission of the Church, as well as to serve the needs of others in the midst of our daily lives. In the Gospel passage from John s Gospel, we hear the familiar story of the wedding at Cana. Marriage has long been an analogy of God s intimate love for His people. It is fitting, then, that Jesus performs the first miracle of His public ministry at a wedding. It is Mary who notices the problem that the wine is running low at this wedding celebration. She decides to intercede. She does so out of concern for the young couple. The couple or the families would be laughed and ridiculed for not having enough wine on hand for the celebration. Mary exemplifies God s tender and personal loving care so well that she wants to protect this young couple from any undue anxiety. She steps in, is persistent with Jesus, Who first denies His mother s request to help. Jesus doesn t just give this couple ordinary wine. He provides them the best wine. Our three readings communicate one important truth: Our God utterly delights in each of us and loves us unconditionally and without limits. Some of the ways that God show His love for us are by giving us special graces that allow us to serve each other; giving us His own mother Mary, who watches for our slightest need and anxiety, and who intercedes for us; and by giving us more than our heart s desire. God s tender and compassionate love for us extends throughout the centuries to today and til the end of time. Let us all pray that we allow ourselves to be cooperative to His transformative love in our lives. And Let s always be thankful for His care for us. 4 We are so excited to be presenting Oremus, A Guide to Catholic Prayer. This program will teach the essentials of an effective and fruitful prayer life. We will discover how to place ourselves in the presence of God and follow the wisdom of saints and the Tradition of the Church to learn how to express ourselves to God in prayer. More information soon to come. (We are not able to collect clothes or shoes). Toiletries for the Homeless.... Because of your generosity, we were able to send thousands of bags for the men and women who came into the homeless shelter in Pittsburgh over the last few years. Unfortunately, due to several reasons, we are not able to continue this program, and I will no longer be collecting these items. When I first started collecting the travel size toiletries for the New Horizon Pioneers (formerly known as Verizon Pioneers), I never imagined how much would be collected from St. Regis. It has been overwhelming and I cannot thank you enough for helping make this project a huge success. 5 St. Anne Home is a ministry of the Felician Sisters of North America dedicated to the continued healing mission of Jesus Christ by providing a continuum of care and supportive services to adults, the families, and their caregivers. The motor coach departs from St. Paul's parking lot at 6:00 am and returns at 11:30 pm. The cost of the trip is $120 per person which includes the motor coach, taxes, dinner and admissions. We will attend the noon mass at the Basilica and lunch is on your own at the Basilica Cafe. This trip will take the place of the Sights and Sounds theater trip. Shortly after King s death, the National Conference of Catholic Bishops, the National Council of Churches, the Synagogue Council of America, and the Standing Conference of Orthodox Bishops in the Americas released an interfaith statement, mourning their colleague in ministry. We bow together in grief before the shameful murder of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a unique apostle of the non-violent drive for justice, [and] affirm that no service of remembrance or local memorial is equal to the greatness of his labor or the vastness of our national need.
