1 Redeemer Happenings S e ptember 2018 If you would like to meet with a group who sews quilts for CLWR please join us on these dates: September 13 & 27, October 11 & 25, November 8 & 22, December 6. We start at 9 AM and sew until about 3:30PM. You can bring your sewing machine or just come to press, cut, pin, encourage or create. Hey all you seniors or wannabe seniors, our lunches here at September Lunch Thursday, Sept noon Older but Wiser LutheranS Redeemer are starting once again. A few new faces on our lunch committee are Sandra Wapple, Wendy Hansen and Agnes Goodman. These wonderful chefs will be creating delicious meals and with their wit and humor, you are sure to be going home with a smile. Come out on September 13 at 12 noon for some great eats and guest speaker retired RCMP officer Ross Taylor who will share some of his experiences with us. RSVP to Becky at the church office by Tuesday Sept 11. Cost is $10/ person.

2 VBS UPDATE Redeemer welcomed 112 children for the Rolling River Rampage July It was a successful week thanks to the 50+ youth and adult volunteers. Our VBS mission was to collect items and money for CLWR We Care kits and for local charities. We were able to make 16 Learning and Living kits and 16 Hygiene kits with plenty of extra supplies to donate locally. Some items will be added to initiatives that the Women s Ministry already support such as the community school and the Friendship Inn and the rest will be given to the Food Bank and Learning Centre. In addition, about $400 was collected for CLWR to aid with shipping costs and support their program. Elsa Graupe and Kira Wilson attended the Canadian Lutheran and Anglican Youth gathering in Thunder Bay, Ontario from August th. They joined several other Saskatchewan youth on a bus trip that allowed them to visit several sights along the way and make many new friends. Both girls had a wonderful time and look forward to sharing some of their experiences with the congregation in the near future. Thank- you from both families for supporting their attendance. A new year of Confirmation is about to begin. Gr. 7&8 youth from Redeemer will be part of our city-wide Confirmation program that includes youth and pastors from 6 Saskatoon ELCIC Lutheran churches plus Faith Parish in the Outlook area. We are excited to begin using a new resource CONFIRM NOT CONFORM, that exposes youth to a wide range of topics including Scripture, sacraments, creeds, prayer, heresy, other religions and serving others while helping them think through what they believe and why. The youth and leaders will experience teaching/learning sessions, worship, retreats, field trips, mission projects and more as they: learn that it s OK to challenge what they have been told decide what they believe while seeing what others believe build their beliefs and learn to put them into action and discover how belief and faith are more than word. CONFIRM NOT CONFORM also includes emphasis on our youth s presence and involvement in their congregation. As our whole church grows together in faith, we will continue to make a commitment to support and welcome youth as they continue their life in Christ here in our community and beyond. Our group will gather on Sunday evenings (6:30-8:30pm) twice a month, hosted by different congregations each month. 3 Women s Ministry Women s Ministry News September 2018 Our mission is to encourage growth and development of women through faithful service in Christ, regular study of scripture and faith in action. On Tuesday, August 21 st, we were privileged to have Pastor Melissa Brooks lead our Women s Joint Bible Study. Women from various Lutheran churches across the city joined us for an evening of learning, fellowship, and dessert. Upcoming Events: 1. 4 A Message from your Stewardship Committee Were you watching on Sunday August 26 when Brooke Henderson won the LPGA Golf Tournament in Regina? Timing of the event allowed church attendees to enjoy their Sunday Service and maybe have a coffee before watching a 20-year old lass from Ontario capture the hearts of Saskatchewan and Canada. As summer rolled into July and Redeemer s Rolling River Rampage VBS unfolded, it was amazing to see God s message from Isaiah 42-2: When you pass through the waters I will be with you, capture the hearts and minds of youngsters and teachers alike. Congratulations to the leaders for a very well run and executed program. As we head into fall consider this one of your first reminders of Redeemer s Fall Supper, Sunday 2018 OCT 21. While details remain a work in progress, keep your calendar date open for this feast of food, fun and fellowship. This fall you will hear messages about Living Courageously while Thinking Generously and Practicing Generosity. The congregation undertook a visioning workshop in June. Staff and your leadership team must now put into place best practices to further the word of God within our community. Some of our leadership team and Pastor Trent already met with Pastors and members of other Lutheran Churches to open discussions on how we can courageously go forward. In the first book of Timothy and Psalm 31, we hear Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who wait for the LORD. At the Synod Convention in June 2018 Bishop Sid Haugen reminded attendees that Lutherans need to remain relevant to the world and to us. There are opportunities to expand the notion of lay leaders; now that sounds courageous. Respectfully submitted Stewardship Committee Do you feel a call to be on the Call Committee? 5 Four Benefits of Volunteering Jesus asks all Christians to reach out and give of our time, energy and talents. To be a part of the Body of Christ in ministry is an immense privilege. However, with busy lives and schedules packed full, it can be hard to accomplish! What can we fit in? What can we do? There will never be a right time available. A good start can be to take small steps that are possible to fit in. One way everyone can be involved is through volunteering. Volunteering here at Redeemer is a great way to start! Opportunities to volunteer can be matched with your availability of time and interests, from one-time activities to ongoing projects. Here are four examples of benefits you will receive when you make the commitment to volunteer. You will soon discover that, although volunteering is all about serving others, you will in turn be blessed. You re able to draw closer to God: When you spend time volunteering to help people, you actually draw closer to Him. You feel more connected to Jesus, his teachings and the way of life he practiced and advocated. You ll know you are making a difference in other people s lives: By volunteering, you are giving people your time, a valuable asset that does not come back once you spend it. By sharing your time, you know you are making a positive difference in the lives of others. You will become a lasting influence: Volunteering at church generates feelings of commitment, loyalty and purpose. Others will look to you as an example of goodwill and worthwhile living. Serving others becomes a permanent part of life if you begin the tradition, it will be in the future. You grow personally: When you volunteer, you not only enrich the lives of others but also grow personally and spiritually. Over time, it shapes your decision-making and directs your actions towards God s will for our lives. So come and join the volunteers working in the vineyards at Redeemer! You will be welcomed and enjoy the fellowship and connection of other volunteers working alongside. Presentation and Discussion at 7 p.m. 1 st Saskatoon Scout Group provides co-ed outdoor adventures for children and youth aged 5 to 26. Our programs encourage selfconfidence, teamwork and leadership skills. We aim to develop caring attitudes with respect for the environment, community and world. Contact person: Joan Cole-Heine Stephen Ministry and Redeemer have been together for over twenty years. During these twenty plus years many Redeemer members have provided one-on-one care and continue to provide a ministry of care at Redeemer. Training to become a Stephen Minister requires fifty hours of class time and a personal sense of call to this kind of one-on-one caring ministry. A class for training new Stephen Ministers is scheduled to start this fall October If you are interested in attending the fall sessions or wanting to learn more about Stephen Ministry as a caring ministry, you are invited to approach one of Redeemer s seven current Stephen Ministers, or one of our four Stephen Leaders, or our pastor Trent (or Becky who will forward your inquiry to the appropriate person).
