Heritage Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) heritage highlights October 2018 Heritage Presbyterian Church c/o Tudor Oaks S77 W12929 McShane Drive Muskego, WI Phone: Fax: Website: heritagechurchmuskego.com Rev. Michelle Henrichs Pastor Clerk of Session Glenn Sheridan: In case of Emergency or Hospitalization: 1. Pastoral Care, Rev. Michelle Henrichs: Your assigned deacon (see deacon tree) 3. Church office: The apostles gathered around Jesus, and told him all that they had done and taught. He said to them, Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while. For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. And they went away in the boat to a deserted place by themselves. Mark 6:30-43 (NRSV) Sunday through Tuesday I was on retreat with a group of clergy new to ministry or the presbytery (or both). On Sunday, as we transitioned from a day of ministry to a time of Sabbath, we discussed the importance to the congregation of their pastor taking time for regular Sabbath and time with peers. If we aren t nurturing our spiritual life, how can we lead the congregation s? That being said, I m not writing a newsletter article this month because I took time away to be with Jesus. I encourage you to do the same. If you weren t in worship on Sunday, the video prelude is on the Heritage Facebook page so that you can spend some time away with Jesus even if you can t get away. Peace, Michelle YouTube link to Sunday s video prelude:
PAGE 2 HE R I TA GE H IGH LIG H T S Photos from the Ezekiel Cookout On Monday, August 20, Heritage joined Ezekiel friends for an afternoon of fun, food, and fellowship at the newly completed house on 61st Street in Milwaukee.
PAGE 3 God is our refuge and strength. Therefore, we will not fear though the waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble. Psalm 46 Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) urges your support for those affected by Hurricane Florence. PDA is delivering immediate aid to those impacted by the storm on the Eastern Seaboard of the United States. Initial assessment suggests catastrophic destruction, but the full scope of the damage will not be known for many months. The storm s path cut across areas still recovering from Hurricane Matthew (2016). While these winds and waters have meant loss and destruction, the work of PDA might become, as the psalmist says, a river whose streams make glad the city of God. PDA is deploying teams to affected presbyteries to meet with Presbyterian and community leadership to assist in coordinating relief efforts and mucking out homes and churches. After initial needs are addressed, PDA will remain providing spiritual and emotional care and long-term recovery to address the unmet needs of those impacted. Through your prayerful gifts, we draw hope out of the chaos. The needs for the response are great. God s people are once again called on to stand in the "GAP" Give. Act. Pray. Give: Financial support for relief efforts can be designated to DR000169, which supports the church s response to hurricanes impacting the U.S. Gifts can be made online, by phone at (800) , or by check, which can be mailed to Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), P.O. Box , Pittsburgh, PA Act: Download the bulletin insert. Learn how you and your congregation can help families who have lost everything in the devastation. Stay informed and like us on Facebook, download resources and share updates.
PAGE 4 PDA, cont. Pray: Pray for those who suffered loss of home or for those who are working tirelessly to provide rescue, humanitarian aid, and spiritual and psychological support. OUT OF CHAOS, HOPE Wired Word Resumes The fall session of The Wired Word began on September 16th and meets each Sunday at 9 a.m. in the Private Dining Room (Art Gallery). (The Wired Word does NOT meet on Shelter Service Sundays, however.) This study for adults includes biblical commentary and discussion questions related to a topic in the news and encourages discussion on applying the lesson to everyday life. Lesson topics, Scripture references, and questions are ed on Thursdays for those who like to prepare in advance. Everyone is welcome! Many Thanks Many thanks to all who made Kick-Off Sunday, Sept. 9, a big win - especially Andy and Sara Pforr, who manned the grill for our cookout!
PAGE 5 HELP WANTED Members needed to help greet, usher, and count during Sunday worship through December. No experience needed. Will train. Contact Gigi Sheridan at: gsheridan@wi.rr.com or Pastor's Bible Study Join us as we reflect on the texts for the coming Sunday. We meet in the Poplar Lifestyle Room at 1:00 p.m. every Tuesday of the month except the third Tuesday. For more information, please contact Pastor Michelle at mahenrichs@gmail.com.
PAGE 6 Author of Grateful: The Transformative Power of Giving Thanks at Immanuel Presbyterian Church, Milwaukee Diana Butler Bass is a widely-read author and scholar of American religion and culture. Her newest book explores why gratitude is missing as a modern spiritual practice, offers practical suggestions for reclaiming it, and illuminates how the shared practice of gratitude can lead to greater connection with God, our world, and our own souls. Presbytery friends are invited to join Immanuel for lectures on Saturday afternoon, October 13 at 1:30 and 3:00. Dr. Bass will preach on Sunday morning at 10:00. This special weekend event is being offered to Church and community through a special gift. Click here for more information and free registration. Immanuel Presbyterian Church is located at: 1100 N. Astor Street Milwaukee, WI For more information or to carpool, please contact Barbara Pforr at: bap4@earthlink.net.
PAGE 7 Two Messages from the Presbytery of Milwaukee PRESBYTERY OF MILWAUKEE SEEKS VOLUNTEER TREASURER As our current treasurer, Jessie Read, plans for retirement this year, we are looking for a part-time, volunteer Treasurer to begin working with her to transition.
