1 Advent VOICE Want to learn more about Advent Lutheran? Join us for a Welcome Class. PG. 3 It s all about fun at Advent Game Night PG. 6 November 2013 A Publication of the Mission of Advent Lutheran Church Advent Youth presents a fundraising dinner for Mill Creek Food Bank PG. 6 Upcoming EVENTS Adopt-a-Highway, 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 2 Welcome Class, 11:30am, Sunday Nov. 3 in the Fellowship Hall Sharing Our Bounty in the Season of Giving Text by Trudi Trueit Photos by Bill Trueit I am so thankful for the help with food to cook my first turkey dinner. Since I have been reunited with my three children, I haven't been able to do any holidays due to my health. This year, it has been five months since chemo started and I have more strength and am excited to have the holidays at home. Thank you all for being so kind and giving. Thank you for getting us a turkey. It was so good. The best part was the dinner rolls. They were good. Thanks for letting our family have a good holiday and God bless you." ~ From a Child Youth Dinner, 6:30pm Sunday, Nov.3 in the Fellowship Hall Game night, 6:30pm Saturday, Nov. 9 in the Fellowship Hall Installation of Pastor Scott Postlewait at Advent, Saturday, Nov. 23 These were just two of the touching thank-you notes sent to Advent following our annual Christmas Food Basket Program last year. They remind us that something as simple as a meal can mean so much to a family that is struggling during the holidays. It s why Advent created the Christmas Food Basket program more than 18 years ago, and why you continue to give so generously of your time, talents, and finances. On Saturday, December 21, 2013, Advent again plans to provide about 200 needy families in our area with a turkey and all the trimmings to create a Christmas dinner. To do this, the Food Basket Committee is working toward a goal of raising $10,000. Each basket costs about $50, but Continued on Page 3

2 2 Advent Voice A MESSAGE FROM OUR PASTOR Thank you for such a warm welcome to Advent Lutheran Church! These first few weeks have flown by, and it has been a pleasure getting acquainted with many of you, meeting with groups and individuals, and getting a glimpse of the rich tapestry of talent, energy, and perspective that is Advent Lutheran Church. Both Katie and I are glad to be serving with you! It is readily apparent that this is a congregation where members genuinely care about each other and about our community. Your care is obvious during the passing of the peace in worship, but just as apparent in the prayers of this congregation - from the softly spoken intercessions given during worship, to the many requests and responses for prayer that come across my desk and to the Church Office every day, to the active prayer chain. One of my daily practices is to pray for Advent. Each week I spend time in personal prayer for the congregation and for members present and absent, neighbors, and those for whom special prayers have been requested. Although the time I spend in prayer is part of my daily work as your pastor, it is anything but a chore. Rather, it s an uplifting part of each day; I feel privileged to be entrusted with your cares, pains, and joys. As we begin ministry together, I ask for your prayers also. Prayers of thankfulness for this community, and prayers of direction and clarity as we move ahead. This is an exciting time for Advent. We move forward together in prayer, confident of God s grace and care! Peace, Pastor Scott Postlewait Open Door Ministries Auction November 2 nd at 5 pm. Advent supports Open Door Ministries whose mission is to bring the compassion of Christ and his church to persons affected by HIV/AIDS; to extend Christ s affirming, inclusive love to persons who have often felt excluded and condemned by church and society because of their sexual orientation; to encourage and support the Church and its members as they address issues if human sexuality and Biblical interpretation. Open Door is dependent on donations and sponsorships to continue our ministry. Our Annual Fall Gala and Auction is our major fundraiser for the year and provides us with funds to keep growing and expanding as needed. The Annual Gala and Auction is Saturday November 2 nd at 5 pm and we would like to fill a table of Advent supporters. Contact Jill Bossen ( or jrbossen@comcast.net) premium ticket cost, $70/person. Welcome Class Pastor Scott is conducting a Welcome Class after the second service on Sunday, November 3rd. If you would like to find out more about Advent Lutheran Church or the Lutheran Church in general, this class is for you. Some people may decide that they want to join Advent Lutheran Church, so we will be welcoming new members at both services on Sunday, November 17 th. Later that afternoon, there will be a welcome luncheon in honor of Advent s new members. We hope you'll consider attending this class. This is an exciting time in the life of Advent Lutheran Church, and we invite you to be part of it! You can call the church office ( ) to register, or Laurie Dunlap, our Office Administrator (laurie@adventlutheran.net), or Pastor Scott (pastor@adventlutheran.net). Childcare can be provided, so let us know if you are in need of that, as well.

3 Continued from Page 1 any donation amount is appreciated. If you d like to make a contribution, please mark your check Christmas Food Baskets or pick up an envelope at the table in the Fellowship Hall between services from November to mid-december. 4 4 Advent Voice COUNCIL REPORT October 2013 WELCOME PASTOR SCOTT The October council Meeting was Pastor Scott s first Council Meeting at Advent. He had a busy first week meeting the quilters, calling on shut-ins, meeting with the Youth and getting organized. YOUTH FUNDRAISER DINNER A dinner to be provided by the Youth as a fundraiser for the Food Bank was presented and approved. SALE OF PROPERTY We have finalized the sale of the strip of land to Polygon and have received payment. These funds have been allocated to property upgrade and maintenance, according to our agreement with our mortgage holder. RECORDING OF WORSHIP SERVICE A project has been started to record our Sunday Worship, at least in part. The recording would be made available on the Advent Website and in CD form. The CD s could be delivered to shut-ins that do not have internet access. Volunteers are needed to help copy the sermons to CDs and to deliver them. This should not be a time-consuming job, but would need to be done regularly. Contact the church office to sign up to help. The Classics Seniors Group The Classics met on Wednesday, October 9th for their monthly potluck. There were 39 people in attendance. As always, lots of good food. We are preparing for our bake sale to be held on Sunday, November 17th before and after both church services. We will meet again on Wednesday, November 13, at 12:30 in the Fellowship Hall. All are welcome. Bring a dish to share.
