The gift of time Thought provoking... The last wishes of Alexander the Great...On his death bed, he summoned his army generals and told them his three ultimate wishes : 1. The best doctors should carry his coffin.. 2. The wealth he had accumulated (money, gold, precious stones) should be scattered along the procession to the cemetery His hands should be let loose, so that they hang outside the coffin for all to see!! One of his generals who was surprised by these unusual requests asked Alexander to explain. Here is what Alexander the Great had to say: 1. I want the best doctors to carry my coffin to demonstrate that in the face of death, even the best doctors in the world have no power to heal." 2. I want the road to be covered with my treasure so that everybody sees that material wealth acquired on earth, will stay on earth." 3. I want my hands to swing in the wind, so that people understand that we come to this world empty handed and we leave this world empty handed after the most precious treasure of all is exhausted, and that is------time. We do not take to our grave any material wealth. Only TIME is our most precious treasure because it is LIMITED. We can produce more wealth, but we cannot produce more time. When we give someone our time, we actually give a portion of our life that we will never take back. Our time is our life! The best present that you can give to your family and friends is your TIME. May God grant YOU plenty of TIME, to share with all your family and friends. I believe I have shared with you the distinction made in the Greek language between time. The first type of time is chronos or chronological, minute by minute time. This is clock time. The other is kairos or significant time. These are anniversaries and events that have great significance. For Christians, all time can be kairos as we see the inbreaking of God s grace and activity in our lives. A simple greeting and sign of care can make all the difference. May all of us experience an abundance of kairos time this summer the presence of God: Emmanuel God with us. Questions to ponder this week: *As you look to summer how can you make your activities alive with God s presence? How can we turn our everyday, chronological, chronos time into significant encounters (kairos) where God can shine through the moments, the cracks, the events of our lives?

3 From Surgery to Sanctity: What Life s Hardships Taught This Young Disciple Emma Bassier was in the best shape of her life going into her senior year. She was a ten-time dance champion, an eight-time track champion. Her resume was filled with accolades and her future was bright. Athletics were a huge part of her life and she had realistic hopes at a D1 college athletic career. And then a sudden illness demanded major abdominal surgery. She was stunned, afraid, and even a bit angry. I kept on asking God, Why did you do this to me? Emma recalls. Frustration subsided into sadness as months went by. Then something changed. I finally realized that I had to lean on the Lord. I needed Him to get me through the deepest and darkest place I had ever been. St. Paul s had given her a firm foundation of faith and a loving community of support. Yet looking back, she wonders how real her faith really was before her life was turned upside down. I don t know if I truly had a personal relationship with God, Emma says. What I have now is so different, so strong. I see the Lord as Comforter, King and Friend whereas before, He seemed more like that Big Guy in the Sky. Emma chose to attend college at the University of St. Thomas where faith is an integrated part of college life. It was there where she was also exposed to other faiths and backgrounds, philosophies and lifestyles which helped her to develop deeper and more personal convictions about what she really believed. It caused me to cling closer to the Lord because I knew that He would always lead me in the right way to think, act and speak, Emma says. I started to feel like God is not just up in the sky but He is here, in all life s moments, and I began talking to Him like I would talk to a friend. Life has taught her so much, but her personal encounters with Christ have helped her to realize that life ultimately isn t about her. My life is not about me. Some people might look at me funny when I say that, because it makes them wonder, Well, who is it about then? The answer is that my life is about God, the One who gave me life. Everything I have is a gift from God. I actually own nothing. I owe everything to Him my time, my talents, my treasure they are all His. He has just given me the free will to choose how I spend them. I am learning the value of spending them on Him, and that has truly changed my life. In the end, it was her hardship that gave her the biggest gift of all. Emma sees that with great clarity now. It took the focus of my life off of sports and onto the Lord, which is where I am happy to be. Nothing could provide a clearer picture of what it means to be an intentional disciple of Jesus. Lord, thank you for Emma, for her great gifts but also for those trials that led her to trust completely in you. May we all find inspiration in her story and discover once again the only secure foundation to stand on Jesus Christ.

This group will help people transition through new life events or challenges that they are experiencing by providing meals and other household assistance such as cleaning, mowing, babysitting etc. Members of the Hands of Hospitality team will be notified of needs and given the opportunity to sign up to help. In this the Jubilee Year of Mercy, we are reminded of the Corporal Work of Mercy, Visiting the Imprisoned. But sometimes that means helping those as they finish their imprisonment. It might also mean walking side-by-side with someone as they navigate their way through a diversion program, one that allows them to meet their obligation to society while foregoing a prison sentence. Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Davenport provides mentors to folks coming out of prison as well as those in diversion programs like Drug Court. We will have a two hour information and training session for those wanting to learn more about this ministry on Tuesday, July 5th at 6:00 PM in the conference room in the parish office.
