Tony Herold One of the main initiatives in our parish is forming intentional disciples by connecting people with each other, the person of Jesus Christ and his teachings through Scripture. We have offered small group studies which are intent on helping us in our walk as disciples. Michael Havercamp, Director of Evangelization and Mission for our parish, has created our fall small group study focused on trust. I looked over the material shortly after it was written and I cannot be more pleased with the content! I am excited that it is now on our website for small groups to use. Please take some time, if you haven t already, to go to the website under the tab Discipleship and Evangelization and scroll down to Small Groups to download this new study. The title of this study is: The School of Trust: God s Invitation Into the Abundant Life. Let me quote from the first few paragraphs of the study to give you a sense about what this new study is all about: C. S. Lewis once noted how easy it is to believe in the strength of a rope as long as you re not hanging over a cliff by it. Faith in God is a lot like that. It is easy to believe in ideas, to follow moral codes, to go to church. But we wouldn t call that faith. In the final analysis, faith is a matter of trust. It is trusting in the Lord as if your life depended on it. It is trusting that when all the chips are down his promises will protect and provide for you. Life has a way of challenging our trust in God. We have children and checking accounts, bills and bosses, mortgages and married life. We stress and struggle. We work and worry. And we often wonder if we re really going to make it. Welcome to the School of Trust. This small group study isn t so much about obtaining new knowledge as it is fostering a renewed, authentic trust in God. It is about watching the floodwaters rise and trusting in your ultimate rescue. It is about standing in the midst of the fire, and by God s grace, not getting burned. It is about facing the world s threats and challenges, and not giving into fear. My suggestion is that you go to our website and look through the material that Michael has provided for this study. It is timely for us to engage in such a study during these weeks as we embrace the challenges before us on this journey of discipleship. 3 The School of Trust: Damien of Molokai This adapted biography was originally published in 1974 by the Franciscans of St. Anthony's Guild, Patterson, N. J. In case you missed the first week of St. Paul s exciting new small group study, The School of Trust, take a sneak peek into the life of a contemporary saint whose extraordinary trust in God opens our eyes to the presence of God among us. When leprosy reached the Hawaiian islands in the late 19 th century, it left a wake of devastation hard for us to imagine. Government officials adopted a policy of segregation, banishing all lepers to the pristine yet remote island of Molokai. Jozef De Veuster was a simple man born in Belgium to farming parents. Strong and able, Jozef was prepared to take over the family farm but his real calling was to the Catholic priesthood. It was Fr. Damien who responded to the call to the poor lepers of Molokai, arriving in 1873 with little more than his Breviary. Victims of the disease were all about him, their bodies in ruins, their faces ravaged by the rapacious bacteria. The constant coughing of the sick was the colony's most familiar sound. Gathering up his courage, Damien began to approach the lepers one by one. Fr. Damien sprung into action, dedicated to dignify the lives of these human beings but also build a society worthy to call home. He embraced the lepers and encouraged them to help in all his activities. They built everything from coffins to cottages, roads and a rectory. Damien taught his people to farm, to raise animals, to play musical instruments, to sing. There was no self-pity in this colony. Damien's cheerful disposition and desire to serve touched the lepers' hearts without patronizing or bullying. Little by little their accomplishments restored the humanity their illness threatened to destroy. Fr. Damien touched his lepers, he embraced them, dined with them. He cleaned their wounds and bandaged their sores. He placed the sacred host upon their battered mouths. He put his thumb on their forehead and anointed them with holy oil. He touched these abandoned human beings, and in doing so, he communicated the divine love of Jesus, which healed the necrotic flesh of the ten lepers so long ago. Eventually, Fr. Damien would contract the disease himself. Long before the leprosy left its terrifying mark on him, Fr. Damien wrote to his brother in Europe, "I make myself a leper with the lepers to gain all to Jesus Christ. The disease finally claimed him in It was the final price God exacted from Damien to show his sense of community and oneness with his poor afflicted flock. Four years before his death, Fr. Damien wrote his superior in the Hawaiian Islands, "I am a leper. Blessed be the good God." It s not too late to join a School of Trust study group! We have received a number of gifts to this campaign already totaling over $1.1 million. May I ask that you prayerfully consider a gift that is meaningful to you? If we continue to come together, as one united faith community, to accomplish the vital work of our parish, we will be successful in reaching our goals. We continue to receive questions from parishioners, here are two common questions we received this week: What is Denning Hall used for? Can I use the hall for a wedding reception or a special event? Denning Hall is constantly being used for a variety of parish and school events such as Bible Studies, meetings, funeral luncheons, before care and after care for school children, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Knights of Columbus, Altar & Rosary and Home & School. Denning Hall may also be used by parishioners for social events connected to a sacrament. The current policy for Denning Hall use is under review by parish leadership and will be publicized as soon as it is completed. The parish recently received a generous estate gift. What were the funds from the estate gift used for? This money was set aside for a rainy day fund and is currently in an investment account. May God s blessings continue to be with you. God bless, Father Tony October Rosary Campaign During the month of October we are engaging on a parish-wide rosary campaign to encourage family and personal prayer honoring our Blessed Mother, Mary. Resources are available in the Gathering Apace to assist in praying the rosary. There is a community rosary at 6 AM Monday through Friday or prior to the later morning Mass during the week. Father Kneemiller will also lead a special family rosary following Benediction on Tuesday evening, October 11 at 6 PM. Each weekend families are encouraged to place a bead in the bowl in front of Mary's statue in the Gathering Space for each rosary prayed during the previous week.
