Tony Herold I have heard that the older we get, the faster time moves. I am very aware of this as I celebrate my 39th Anniversary of Priestly Ordination on Saturday, July 14th. Interesting that this day falls on a Saturday my ordination in 1979 was on a Saturday. I am grateful to God for His mercy and grace which has sustained me in my vocation. I realize that my years ahead are fewer than those behind and I know I will need to rely more on the Lord to sustain me through whatever challenges are ahead. This year will be my fortieth year as a priest hard to believe. For that reason I am so fortunate to be able to travel back to Rome with a great group of parishioners in early September. Rome is where much of my formation occurred and many memories were forged. I will be leaving this Sunday, July 15 for my annual retreat. I will be traveling to Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, not too far from Detroit. The retreat begins on Monday, July 16 and ends on July 25. Please know that you, fellow parishioners, will be in my prayers in a special way. Obviously I have a need to recharge my faith and fan into a flame the Spirit of God in my life. The mission of the church needs us to be wholly dedicated to Jesus. I know that I often fall short. While I am away, Fr. Nicholas will be available until July 20. On July 21, Fr. Nicholas will be leaving for six weeks as he travels back to Nigeria to spend time with his family. Let s pray for a safe trip home for Fr. Nicholas and that he return rested and well. He is scheduled to return on September 2nd. My good friend, Fr. Tom Doyle, will helping out while I am on retreat and Deacon Bob Shaw also will be available. By the way, don t we have a great deacon! ********************** Pope Francis says that the gospel must be proclaimed in poverty. Jesus wanted the disciples to have a no frills attached attitude no food, no sack, no money in their belts. Listen to his words a few years back as he was celebrating daily Mass: This is the mission of the Church: the Church that heals, that cares [for people]. I sometimes describe the Church as a field hospital. True, there are many wounded, how many wounded! How many people who need their wounds to be healed! This is the mission of the Church: to heal the wounded hearts, to open doors, to free [people], to say that God is good, God forgives all, that God is our Father, God is tender, that God is always waiting for us.... Can you yourself transform humanity around you in your daily life?

3 The Illusive Idea of Summer Summer is a great idea. It s a time to slow down, to relax, to get outside. It s a time to take a vacation, to reconnect with friends and family, to let the soul breathe a bit. As a kid, summers seemed to last forever. Three months was an eternity and it was as close as I got to the feeling of total freedom. Playing with my neighborhood buddies every day, countless hours in the woods and alongside the creek, games of kick-the-can at night. It was just what I needed and I enjoyed every minute of it. As an adult, I find myself longing for the same sense of summer spontaneity and freedom, but somehow my lived experience tells a different story. One trip after another leaves me more exhausted than refreshed, too many social engagements, the house getting even more unruly, and I m left chasing the tail of an illusive dream. I want to rest but I find myself running. I want to stop and disconnect, but I m locked into a frenetic schedule of engagement. Where is this great summer ideal I am looking for? Thomas Merton found himself in the same sort of Catch-22. He longed for solitude but so often found himself hemmed into a life of agency and urgency. And that s what prompted his love affair with the woods: I live in the woods out of necessity. I get out of bed in the middle of the night because it is imperative that I hear the silence of the night, alone, and, with my face on the floor, say psalms, alone, in the silence of the night. The silence of the forest is my bride and the sweet dark warmth of the whole world is my love and out of the heart of that dark warmth comes the secret that is heard only in silence, but it is the root of all the secrets that are whispered by all the lovers in their beds all over the world. Perhaps as adults we forget the urgency of this call into the woods and silence. What would it look like this summer if we lived into the beauty of the solitude that creation has offered us? Let s take the remaining moments of this summer to capture moments of silence, to lean into the beauty that is natural around us, to step outside and breathe in the fresh feeling of the sun on our face. Let the memory of the freedom of your childhood seep into your soul and set the rhythm for space and the breath of the One who longs to be with you.
