2 A Message from Father Tony Herold We welcome this weekend Fr. Thom Hennen, the vocation director for the Diocese of Davenport. He is offering all of the Masses this weekend even our first Saturday Mass and the Sacrament of Reconciliation as I travel to St. Louis for the Jubilee Mass for my sister. This is a big year for her as she celebrates being a vowed religious for fifty years! Thanks Fr. Thom and welcome! ***************** One of the events to look forward to in August is our parish picnic scheduled for August 24 beginning at 2:00 PM at the Knights of Columbus Hall. We will conclude our picnic with a special Mass at 5:30 PM. Please join us for the picnic. It would be great to see all of our parishioners gathered together for this. I would encourage you join us, to meet new people and to enjoy the food and fellowship. ***************** I am pleased to announce that we raised a good sum of money for the COAR mission appeal a few weeks ago. There are still some funds being sent in for this mission but so far we have close to $4000 raised for the mission. COAR is the Community of Oscar A. Romero, named after the former archbishop of San Salvador who was murdered during the war in that country. The mission supports children who are in difficult and compromising situations. Thank you for your generosity and support for this mission. **************** Some of our parishioners ran the Bix 7 last weekend. I admire anyone who ran or walked the course! Congratulations to our own Mason Tope who was the first male high school runner to cross the finish line at 39 minutes and 30 seconds. Wow! ************* This past week our parish hosted a Vacation Bible School for our children ages It was an amazing experience! 100 youngsters and about 35 volunteers enjoyed a fun time learning about Jesus and romping around the Zoo more pictures next week! WORSHIP Prayer Vigil Join us Today! The Altar and Rosary Society invites you to join them at the Mary Memorial on this Sunday, August 3 at 4:00 p.m. for a mini prayer vigil. If you have any intentions you would like us to pray for and you cannot attend, please send them to Mary Kay Kendall at marykaykendall@gmail.com or call her at (563) We hope to see you there! TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Most parishes are now aware of the catechumenate and the journey of new faithful in the RCIA, but this form of sacramental initiation disappeared from view in the thirteenth century along with many other ancient practices. Life back then was hard, and often too short, and priests were increasingly insistent about the responsibility of parents to baptize children in danger of death. Since everyone in that society was under unimaginable threat from famine, warfare, and plague, the liturgical rites changed quickly. Everyone was in danger of death all the time. No longer were babies immersed in fonts, being lowered into the water, although the ritual books never revoked immersion as part of the rite. Infusion was the new way, a simple pouring of a few drops of water on the child s forehead. The catechumenate collapsed, being reduced to the recitation of the Creed and an Our Father at every baptism. Amazingly, any provision for adult baptism was shelved, so that as late as the 1950s, a person being baptized was presumed to be an infant, unable to answer for him or herself. Questions of creed and commitment were put to the godparents, not to the person being baptized. Even Dorothy Day and Thomas Merton, famous adult converts, remained mute at their baptisms while their sponsors answered for them. In hindsight all this appears strikingly odd, yet it was accepted as the way things were. We have good reason to give thanks for the vigorous reforms of the last fifty years!

Pope Francis Please take a moment to visit the Lighthouse Catholic Media kiosk in the Gathering Space. For only $3 you can select a CD and listen to inspirational messages from a wide variety of excellent speakers. Of special interest is a new CD, entitled Pure Fatherhood, released by one of our own parishioners, Devin Schadt. Devin is co-founder of The Fathers of St. Joseph, an apostolate that works for the renewal of authentic fatherhood. He recently had his two volume set Joseph s Way published by Ignatius Press. This CD provides fathers with invaluable tools and profound spiritual insights to help them be the great father that God had created them to be. As Devin states, Society goes by the way of the family and the family goes by the way of the father. You are invited to share your faith with our parish youth. Please consider volunteering as a catechist. Training will be provided. This is a wonderful opportunity to go deeper in your own relationship with Christ! Contact Michelle Herrington at to volunteer or if you have any questions. Please stop by the Gathering Space complete your registration form and pay your fees. A Gospel Reflection for Teens by Luke Ebener In today s Gospel, we hear once again the multiplication of loaves and fishes story. While there are so many things to be taken from this wonderful story, I d like to focus on something the disciples said to Jesus: five loaves and two fish are all we have here. How often have I felt like this when it comes to my talents, gifts, and what I can offer to the world? It seems like the little talents I have been given aren t enough to solve the many problems of the world! It seems like I am never enough. But Jesus says the complete opposite! Give me what you have, where you are, and TOGETHER, we are more than enough- there s even leftovers! We are all human. We aren t perfect. We have faults. But today, Jesus doesn t ask us to be perfect and to have everything. He asks us to give Him our gifts, the food we have to offer the world, and through his love, strength, and grace, we can affect thousands of people in a positive way. It could be your smile, your time, your love of sports, your expertise in a subject- give it all to Him. Let him multiply. You are enough.
