In my homily a few weeks ago I shared about a young man who touched my heart while I was in Haiti named Louisman. He had come into the clinic on a stretcher because he suffered from severe malnutrition and at first could barely stand. As I spent time with him in the hospital, I observed him giving some of the food the hospital gave him to his father, and a couple of days later he also offered me a mango when I went to say goodbye. Louisman taught me a great lesson on how to offer selfsacrificing love to others. Today I found out that after a few weeks of hospital care Louisman s parents felt they could take care of him and requested that he be released so he could go home. Early last Sunday the clinic was notified that Louisman had died the Friday before and was laid to rest in a casket by his home. He touched many at the core of their being as they cared for him. I ask for prayers for him, his family and the people of Haiti. As I reflected on our Gospel read- ing from Luke today If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children I thought, do we really know how to give good things to our children? I thought about some of the times I have messed up as a parent. How my priorities may have been misaligned from God s and I made a bad choice. As I watch parents interacting with their young children in the mall or walking down the street with loving care, it touches my heart. I think everyone has good intentions, but the reality is, that we all make mistakes. Therefore, I take comfort in the rest of this reading. I tell you, if he does not get up to give the visitor the loaves because of their friendship, he will get up to give him whatever he needs because of his persistence. After we make a bad choice, God is there to hear our supplication and forgive us. He invites our persistent appeal and wants to help us. He promises us how much more will the Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?" Unlike us, the Holy Spirit is perfect. He cleanses us and is only a prayer away. Every day is a new opportunity to start over, to ask the Holy Spirit to help us make your kingdom come a reality.

3 A Monumental Farewell By: Michael Havercamp Last week we bid a sad farewell to a veritable monument of the St. Paul s community. With disconsolate resignation, we watched the old oak tree in front of the school cut down, piece by piece, and hauled away. One day it was there, this sanguine symbol of the school and parish, and the next it was gone. I have to admit, my heart sinks a little every time I look at the empty space which this tree used to occupy. What was curious to many of us is that the tree appeared perfectly healthy. Now I m no dendrologist but this towering tree with its massive trunk and sprawling canopy of leafy branches seemed to be strong, vibrant and growing. Children still enjoyed the shade it provided. Longstanding parishioners and visitors alike were inspired by its aesthetic balance and beauty. Yet the tree specialist (yes, that s a dendrologist) revealed a different story. While the outside appearance maintained its splendor, the inside was dying. Its once vibrant core was rotting in the very ground which had nurtured its growth for over a century. The tree, while still beautiful, was empty, lifeless, impotent. There is an apt parallel to the life of a parish. Church historians suggest that there are three primary phases in the life of a parish. These phases are mission, maintenance or monument. In the mission stage, invigorated by their encounters with the living God, parish members are excited about reaching out, sharing the Good News of Christ, and transforming the community around them. Every ecclesial community necessarily starts there. Personal and loving relationships with Christ overflow into personal and loving relationships with others. Yet inexorably a parish experiences a slow but necrotic shift. Rife with programs and activities, a parish community begins to look at itself with a seemingly innocuous sense of satisfaction. Look at all we re doing! We ve got all these programs, we re paying the bills, and hey we re doing better than that other parish. Let s just keep this thing going. Slowly mission is replaced with maintenance. Those who study church history tell us that if a church moves into maintenance mode, the next phase is altogether certain. It may take five years or twenty-five years, but those parishes which slip into maintenance will always become a monument. The monument phase is best summed up by the cathedrals in Europe. They are stunningly beautiful, the acoustics are perfect, and the materials exquisite. Yet they are empty on Sundays. They are no longer houses for worshiping disciples but museums for rubber-necking tourists. Still beautiful on the outside, they are dead on the inside. Like the tree in front of the school, they no longer carry the life-giving sap that bears the fruit of eternal life. We were not called to be keepers of the aquarium but fishers of men and women. We are all called to this beautiful, adventurous, unpredictable mission of intentional discipleship. Maintaining is simply prolonging a slow and tragic death. Embrace the mission. Love Jesus. Learn to follow him. Live into your calling. Then launch into the world. Be part of the tree of life, offering fruit and protection for years (and centuries) to come.

School registration will be held on Sunday, August 7 from 9AM to 1PM or on Wednesday, August 10 th from 5:00PM to 7:00PM, both in Denning Hall. Like new and gently used items are welcome. We accept any school related items including uniform skirts and jumpers, shirts, shorts, pants, belts, sweaters, sweatshirts, and spirit wear. Assumption High School uniforms and spirit wear are also accepted. School registration is Sunday, August 7th and Wednesday, August 10th. The uniform sale will be going on during this time. Last year Home and School earned nearly $800 and individual families earned money too! We will set up on Saturday, August 6th from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. If you would like to help during this time you will be able to shop early!!!
