2 Pastor Fr. Tony Herold, V.G. Emerg. Phone: (563) Parochial Vicar Fr. Nicholas Akindele Cell: (563) Deacon Deacon Robert McCoy (Ret.) Deacon Bob Shaw, Parish Secretary Jeanne Sodawasser, Director of Parish Life Michelle Herrington Finance Manager Rose Strickland Director of Pastoral Care Donna Enderle Directors of Evangelization & Mission Michael Havercamp Tasha Havercamp Director of Youth & Young Adult Ministry Luke Ebener (217) Director of Religious Education Jen Brooke Director of Music Dr. Jacob Bancks (773) School Principal Julie Delaney, Parish Prayer Chain Jean Jackson (563) A Message from Fr. Tony Herold During the first week in June, the clergy of the Diocese have an annual June Institute a dedicated time of study and formation. This year Fr. Michael White and Tom Corcoran from Nativity Parish outside Baltimore, MD led this event. The two of them authored a book called Rebuilt about their efforts to turn their sleepy suburban parish into a thriving, vibrant and expansive community of faith. Nativity Parish has grown from 1,800 families to over 4,000 families today. It is an amazing story! Fr. White told us that he was an expert in evangelization for his parish, in his particular community and diocese in the year In other words, he cannot speak for any other situation other than his own particular situation. Father White and the parishioners of Nativity Parish decided to focus on three aspects of parish life in order to concentrate their efforts for renewal. First of all they focused on the unchurched be they unchurched Catholics, spouses of Catholics who are non-catholic, or those in their area that had no church affiliation or no particular faith. Your zip code is your mission field, according to Fr. White. The parish moved from catering to a consumer mentality to a focus on mission. Secondly, they made the weekend a priority. Realizing that they would see 80% or more their parishioners as well as visitors and guests at any given weekend Mass, they put their resources in making the Saturday night and Sunday Masses warm, inviting, hospitable, prayerful, and vibrant experiences. Realizing that what they do on Sunday is vitally important, the people of Nativity Parish reoriented their resources to engage those coming to their church on Sundays. Finally, Nativity Parish challenged all their parishioners to grow as disciples. Everyone was called to look upon themselves as working on behalf of the Kingdom of God. All had responsibility to live as followers of Jesus at home, work, school or play. The results for this parish have been amazing! Obviously, the situation in Maryland will be different from our situation here at St. Paul the Apostle Parish. However, the principles that were used at Nativity Parish are essential. Our parish has been focusing on discipleship ever since I have been here. We have been attempting to move from a consumer Catholicism to a deeper understanding of our baptismal call. We have much more to do. How beautiful that our Diocese is embarking on a journey of renewal as we prepare for Vision 20/20: Pentecost to Pentecost. QUESTIONS BASED ON SUNDAY S READINGS What is the farmer s job in both these parables? What is God s job? Could you ask yourself the same two questions about your life as a follower of Jesus?
3 It is good to praise the Lord! Too often I find myself one of those people not full of gratitude and praise. I call myself a realist, but truthfully I might be more of a pessimist. How often in my quiet time do I sit and praise God simply for who He is and for all the ways He has blessed me, my family, our community, etc. Instead, I enter prayer with a long litany of requests or a series of pouring (dumping) my heart out to Jesus. It is more likely that I have gone throughout my entire day and in any conversation with the Lord, not thanking Him for what He has done for me, or offering any sense of gratitude for the prayers He has answered. The Psalm in this weekend s readings is such a beautiful reminder of the glory we should give to God, of our need to praise Him for all that He has done for us. It is good to praise the Lord and make music to your name, O Most High, proclaiming your love in the morning and your faithfulness at night, to the music of the ten-stringed lyre and the melody of the harp. For you make me glad by your deeds, Lord; I sing for joy at what your hands have done. How great are your works, Lord, how profound your thoughts! Psalm 93: 1-5 Really, truly, how can we not praise God? Sometimes it takes me singing a worship song in Mass or on the radio to really allow my lips and heart to praise God. And yet when I do; I experience joy. Inevitably when I reflect in praise a smile creeps onto my face and its hard to fight back tears in worshiping the one who loves me so. The Psalms remind us so often of the praise that should be on our lips-glory for the one who has created us and given us everything in this life. Perhaps you are someone who doesn t struggle with this and can truly live a spirit of gratitude and praise. However, if you are like me, I encourage you this week to start your prayer with worship/praise and to end your days with a reflection on all that you are thankful for in God s provision in your life. It s not that the Lord needs that from us, but in our gratitude and praise of all that He has done for us, our hearts change. We start to see everything as a gift, as sacred. With the acknowledgement of all the blessings He bestows, even if in the midst of struggle, we face each day with new eyes to see. And then perhaps, that joy that wells up from within us, can be a gift to those around us-an opportunity for them to experience the living Christ in this world. Because joy, my friends, is contagious. ~ Tasha Havercamp
