2 Intentional Discipleship: Our Parish. Our Identity. Our Mission. Pastor Fr. Tony Herold Emerg. Phone: (563) Deacon Deacon Robert McCoy (Ret.) Deacon Bob Shaw, Parish Secretary Michelle Fury, Director of Parish Life Michelle Herrington Finance Manager Rose Strickland Director of Pastoral Care Donna Enderle Directors of Evangelization & Mission Michael Havercamp Tasha Havercamp Director of Youth & Young Adult Ministry Luke Ebener Director of Religious Education Jen Brooke Director of Music Dr. Jacob Bancks School Principal Julie Delaney, Parish Prayer Chain Elaine Lewandoski (563) Parish Website A Message from Father Tony Herold There is an old adage that encourages us to: Think globally, act locally. Often I hear this mentioned regarding our care for the environment or our work on behalf of justice. Obviously we need to understand that our small actions here can have an impact on larger issues. Whether it be recycling trash, alleviating hunger, working for peace in our families, comforting those who mourn we realize that we are all part of something bigger. The eighth guiding principle that guides our parish is fostering unity. Here is how we state it: Fostering Unity We are one body in Christ. Our community understands the importance of fostering healthy relationships within the parish community and beyond. We realize that we are all connected and that the Gospel is intimately personal but not private. Knowing that our unity in Christ is a powerful witness to the Good News, we love one another and commit ourselves to united service to the world. I am part of something much larger than myself. I am a member of a worldwide Church established by Jesus Christ and my mission comes from Christ through his body, the Church. The Church is not something out there in theory but a living reality in the present. I live out my calling in relationships that are real and tangible. If I don t love the people next to me, the Church is not loving as it should. If I don t reach out to those in need, the Church is not reaching out to those in need. We can continue this line of thought in many ways! You understand the point. My connection with the larger Church keeps me focused on the truth of the Gospel as it has been lived out through the centuries. It also helps keep me from collapsing into a small, private world where I am the center of my existence rather than God and Christ. I hope you love and honor Jesus Christ. I hope you love and appreciate his body, the Church. Together we can do infinitely more than we can do by ourselves. This is how the Lord intended it to be. Unity is key! Whatever we do as disciples we do as members of the Church and the relationships we foster in this community strengthen the Church. Jesus says: Love one another as I have loved you. QUESTIONS TO PONDER: *When I look at my relationships, how am I fostering the unity that Christ desires for his body, the Church? *How have I been touched by the body of Christ most recently by someone who was acting as Christ to me? *Where is Christ calling me to act today, this week, on his behalf?
3 Jason Smith Embracing Intentional Discipleship Growing up Catholic, attending Catholic schools and going to Mass his whole life didn t necessarily translate into an active prayer life for Lieutenant Detective Jason Smith of the Davenport Police Department. However, his first attendance at Christian Experience Weekend (CEW) in recent years changed something in him, That moment at the CEW weekend is where I feel like I got that personal relationship: where I stepped out and I reached out for God. I felt like our relationship has grown stronger ever since from that. Something had to change from that encounter he had at CEW. Jason knew that he was different. I knew after that experience I had a responsibility in that relationship- that it was a two way street and it was there. I just had to take advantage of it. Jesus was there. So up to that point, I didn t have a daily prayer life and ever since I have. I pray every day, every morning to foster that relationship. Jason quickly recognized that his daily connection to Christ enlivened his Catholic faith. While Jason spends that majority of his days serving our city, he s also been increasing his involvement at St. Paul s. Jason recently joined the Hospitality and Relationships Commission, which is part of the Parish Leadership Team. As he has been participating in leadership training and unpacking the concept of evangelization, his view on what that means has changed. Evangelization, the more that we look into it, it s something that every one of us is called to do. Evangelization doesn t have to be some scary word...it s about sharing your story. It s about being in relationships, telling people how your relationship with Jesus has changed you and transformed you and that it s available to anyone out there who wants it. Jason embodies an authentic and inspiring example of what it means to be an intentional disciple. He embraces his responsibility to do so as a community member, husband and father. He shared that the experience of his beautiful wife Chrissy coming into the Church through the RCIA process has also moved not only him, but also his entire family closer to God. Jason understands the value of witness as a husband and also as a father to his children Charlie and Maddox. He explains that to teach his kids about the faith, I have to teach by example and have a prayer life. You have to have that relationship (with Christ) yourself if you want your kids to have that relationship. That s the most important thing. It s about prioritizing. Thank you Jason for your witness, your presence in our community of faith and your embracing the call of missional discipleship.!
4 Our 8th Guiding Value Fostering Unity During the Last Supper, Jesus prays this fervent request, I pray not only for them, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, so that they may all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us, that the world may believe that you sent me. ( John 17:20-21) One of the biggest obstacles to unity between any groups (be they ethnic, racial, political or religious) is the tendency to de-humanize the other. We have this unfortunate tendency to consider the outsider, the stranger, the foreigner or the unfamiliar to be somehow less human. This allows us, in an evil twist of logic, to justify our slander or mistreatment of those who are different from us. The unthinkable argument used to justify slavery was the claim that people of color were not really people at all, that they were somehow sub-human. While these errors seem so obvious and absurd to us, the Christian family is not exempt from this appalling penchant for dehumanization. For centuries, Christians have been hurling insults and abuses back in forth in the name of truth and righteousness. We trot out the worst and most sensational stories of the other as if to say, See! Look at how bad they are. Can you believe they did that?! What monsters! Yet, we are called to a higher standard. In his twenty-five year stint as pope, John Paul II provided a wonderful example of how we should pursue unity with others. He made over 100 official apologies for the wrongs committed by the Catholic Church or individual Catholics. He apologized to Jews, to women, to the indigenous people of the Americas, to Muslims, to Galileo and to victims of the Inquisition. Even before he was pope, John Paul II (then Karol Wojtyla) helped craft an extraordinary letter of reconciliation between Polish and German bishops following the atrocities of World War II. After being brutally persecuted by the invading German army, the letter declared: We forgive and ask for forgiveness. [1] In May of 1981, Pope John Paul II was shot four times in a failed assassination attempt. The gunman, Mehmet Ali Ağca, was apprehended and sentenced to life in prison. Moved by the spirit of Jesus, Pope John Paul II visited Mehmet in his cell, embracing him with grace and forgiveness. They would develop a friendship over the years and the pontiff would frequently ask people to pray for my brother Ağca whom I have sincerely forgiven. John Paul II even visited personally with Ağca s mother and brother and in 2005 when the pope was on his deathbed, his would-be assassin sent him a letter of well being. It would seem that relationship with the other carries glorious power to overcome any and every divide. Jesus said, Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons [and daughters] of God (Mt 5:9). The beautiful scandal of Jesus message was to call us beyond our eye for an eye and tooth for a tooth mentalities and to embrace the perfection of our heavenly Father who causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good alike (Mt 5:45b). In plain and simple language, Jesus exhorts his followers to do the unimaginable: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you (Mt 5:44). Such are the unmistakable marks of a Christian. May we as a community at St. Paul s embrace the same sense of unity, fostering love and relationship through our many differences, embodying this final prayer of Jesus, that they may be one.
