5 ST. JOAN OF ARC CHURCH RED MASS The Most Reverend Ronald W. Gainer, D.D., J.C.L., Bishop of the Diocese of Harrisburg, will be the principal celebrant at the Red Mass on Monday, October 6, at 12 noon. The Most Reverend Michael J. Fitzgerald, D.D., J.D., J.C.D., V.G., Auxiliary to the Archbishop of Philadelphia, will be the homilist. The Mass will be held in St. Patrick Cathedral, 212 State Street, Harrisburg. All who attend the Red Mass are invited to greet Bishop Gainer and Bishop Fitzgerald after the Mass. At the Red Mass, lawyers, judges, lawmakers, and public officials gather together to pray for God's wisdom and guidance in their pursuit of justice. The Red Mass originated in medieval England at the time of King Edward I, when the twelve judges of the High Court attended Mass as a group on the opening day of the judicial calendar. Today, the Red Mass coincides with the time period in which the U.S. Supreme Court begins its new term. The St. Thomas More Society of Central Pennsylvania, an organization of Catholic lawyers, sponsors the Red Mass each year. All are welcome and encouraged to attend. THE HARRISBURG LIFE CHAIN On Respect Life Sunday, October 5, individuals and families are invited to be a prayerful witness to life. Prayerful witnesses will assemble and line the front property of Holy Name of Jesus Church (6150 Allentown Blvd, Harrisburg) and pray for the unborn and their families from 2-3 PM. Posters will be provided. Divine Mercy will be held in the church at 3:00 p.m. Last year, almost 2000 Life Chains were assembled across the United States. The Life Chain is not a demonstration but an opportunity to pray for the unborn together with other witnesses.
