In the Lord s Supper we receive Christ s body and blood in, with, and under the bread and wine (1 Corinthians 10:17, Because there is one bread, we who are many are one Body, for we all partake of the one bread. ). The blessings of the Lord s Supper are forgiveness of our sins and the strengthening of our faith. Stewardship Sentence: Luke 3:21 Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heavens were opened We know why the people where baptized, but why was Jesus baptized? He didn t need repentance or forgiveness. The answer is that He did it for us. The reason God sent His Son into the world is to fulfill all righteousness for us, to do what we could not do. The whole of Jesus life, everything He did and said was one great offering to the Father in our stead to fulfill all righteousness for us. With our righteousness fulfilled in Jesus and given to us in Baptism our hearts now overflow with thanksgiving and praise. Lectionary Summary: Isaiah 43:1 7; Romans 6:1 11; Luke 3: The Triune God Opens Heaven to You in Holy Baptism - The Baptism of our Lord is an Epiphany of the one true God in the flesh and blood of Jesus Christ. In divine mercy, He takes His place with sinners and takes their sin upon Himself. When all the people were baptized, Jesus submitted Himself to a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins (Luke 3:21). He had no sins of His own, but He took the sins of the world upon Himself and so was baptized into His own death. Therefore, when you pass through the waters, He is with you (Is. 43:2). He created you

9 - 9 - for His glory, and He has redeemed you with His blood, that you may be His own and live with Him in His Kingdom (Is. 43:1, 7). As you are baptized with a baptism like His, so also are you united with Him in His death and resurrection that you might walk in newness of life (Rom. 6:4). For all who are baptized into Christ Jesus receive His anointing of the Holy Spirit and are named by His Father as beloved and wellpleasing sons and daughters. CFW Walther Quote: the sinless, impeccable Christ, at the end of His sojurn among men, suffered death, which no one has to undergo except sinners; for death is the wages of sin. There is only one explanation of the death of the incarnate Son of God - it is substitutive, or vicarious, just like His life under the Law. Jesus died the death which sinners had deserved to die, and by His redeeming love, God purposes to regard the death of His Son as the death which He would have to inflict upon every sinner for breaking the Law. C.F.W. Walther Life Thought: With this One, His Son veiled in frail human flesh, the heart of Almighty God is well-pleased (Luke 3:22). Through the same Jesus Christ, He creates, redeems, and calls (Isaiah 43:1-2) every member of our race to be His own beloved child. Since He stands in our place, even our sicknesses and sorrows do not represent punishments but rather opportunities for Him to shower blessing.
