3 From the Desk of Fr. Mike MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR! The next time you are in the Church Community Room, which is accessible to the right of the church elevator as you enter the church from the back south entrance, you will find a number of religious works of art. There is an image of The Divine Mercy, the Sacred Heart of Jesus, there is an image of the San Damiano cross and other images of the Blessed Mother and Child. All are beautiful religious images. I encourage you to take note of the San Damiano Cross, as it is the image the Archdiocese of Chicago is using for the Renew My Church process. It is a beautiful image for our private prayer and reflection. On the Renew My Church website the Archdiocese offers the following reflection on the San Damiano cross. Praying before the San Damiano cross, St. Francis of Assisi heard Jesus call to him: Go repair my Church, which, as you see, is falling completely into ruin. Similar to the call of St. Francis, we, the Catholic faithful of the Archdiocese of Chicago, are called by Jesus Christ to renew His Church. All of us. Not just our bishops. Not just the pastors and priests. Every one of us he who has ears, let him hear. As a family in faith, we must respond to His call as a family. At first, St. Francis initially took this to mean he was to repair the church buildings of San Damiano. However, he eventually discerned that Jesus was calling him to rebuild the spiritual life and vitality of the entire earthly Church. Likewise, we must see that the future of the Catholic Church is bigger than any of our parish buildings. This icon of Jesus helps us remain focused on three very important realities as we renew our faith lives, parishes, and Archdiocese: 1. It portrays Jesus speaking to us even though He is dying, which serves as a reminder that we need not be afraid to take up this work even if it costs us something, for Jesus is with us always. 2. Jesus is surrounded by others, highlighting the fact that, as we take up the challenge of renewal, our unity should not be diminished but strengthened. 3. Jesus is also featured as the Risen One at the top of the cross a sign of hope to us that in this renewal, which will require us to die to ourselves and familiar patterns, Jesus is offering us new life and vitality for the future. Allow the image of St. Francis hearing Christ call to him from the San Damiano cross to guide your own prayers as we take up the work of renewal together. As we gather in the joy of the Christmas season, we lift up our hearts and prayers for the bishops that are gathered 10 miles away at the Cardinal Stritch Retreat House. As they continue to study and discuss ways to respond to the clerical sexual abuse crisis, the bishops will gather for the retreat January 2-8 at Mundelein Seminary near Chicago. May the Holy Spirit strengthen and guide them as they lead us closer to Emmanuel, God with us. God bless you with a joyous heart this Christmas!!!

5 Monday, January 7, Jn 5:5-13; Mk 1:7-11 or Lk 3:23-38 This is how we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of deceit. Fake news, propaganda, deliberate misinformation, and media hoaxes are so prevalent that it is hard to discern truth. False information spreads faster through social media than reliable information. Even the definition of truth itself is so flexible that reasonable people can t agree on basic facts. Successful spreading of disinformation confirms ill formed beliefs and sows division. Sorting through nonstop deception clouds even the best judgment. No wonder false prophets have long been well received. Labeling someone or something as Christian or good or right does not ensure a belonging to God. Twisting false beliefs cannot make them truth; no matter how slick of a spin put on it, deceit doesn t belong to God. There is no alternative to God s truth. God of wisdom, help me to discern your voice and your truth amid the barrage of false prophecies. Tuesday, January 8, Jn 4:7-10; Mk 6:34-44 Everyone who loves is begotten by God and knows God. The 2018 documentary "Won t You Be My Neighbor" sparked a great renewal of interest in Fred Rogers who used the forum of children s television programming to teach the young that they are important, valuable, unique and lovable just the way they are. As an activist, advocate and educator, he emphasized respect, forgiveness and acceptance despite differences. As an ordained minister, he had the distinct call of ministering to children through media, and every lesson was rooted in love. He said, Love isn't a state of perfect caring. It is an active noun like struggle. To love someone is to strive to accept that person exactly the way he or she is, right here and now. He was a good neighbor, a child of God, a gentle preacher, and a model of God s call to love one another. Lord of tenderness and compassion, let my love come from you so that I may reach out to others patiently and unconditionally. Readings for the Week of January 7 Wednesday, January 9, Jn 4:11-18; Mk 6:45-52 God is love, and whoever remains in love remains in God and God in him. God is not merely a loving entity. God is love and love is God s very essence. The sacrifice and death of Jesus Christ on the cross, his words, actions, desire to forgive, and very existence demonstrate the deep and profound nature of God s love and challenge us to stretch our understanding of what love should be. The Greeks distinguished four types of love: storge, philia, eros, and agape. C.S. Lewis explained storge as natural affection or liking, philia as natural human friendship, eros as natural sexual desire, and agape as supernatural love, such as the love Christ lived and taught. That love comes from God and is what St. Thomas Aquinas explained as "willing the good of the other." It isn t a feeling but a conscious act. To remain in love, we must make love a choice and a deed. Fill our hearts, generous Father, with your boundless love. Thursday, January 10, Jn 4:19 5:4; Lk 4:14-22a His commandments are not burdensome. The Ten Commandments summarize the moral prescriptions of the old law. Christ fulfilled the commandments and showed us how we re supposed to live. The commandments are not designed to trip us up or punish us; they are to guide us to live in right relationship. They remind us to put God and others first. The greatest commandments loving the Lord with all our heart, being, strength and mind, and loving our neighbor as our self focus on the kingdom. The first three commandments are about love of humans for God; the last seven commandments are about love of neighbor. The commandments exist to push us to seek holiness, to embrace Jesus teachings, and to treat others with respect, justice, caring and compassion, not to burden us. Give us the grace, merciful God, to follow your wise and loving plan. Friday, January 11, Jn 5:5-13; Lk 5:12-16 Whoever possesses the Son has life. Although it is truly beyond human comprehension, it cannot be made any clearer: God gave us the gift of eternal life when he gave us his Son. The sacrifice of the Son of God is a pure gift and unparalleled gesture of unconditional love. The only way to have eternal life is through Jesus Christ. He alone liberates us from sin and death. No other way exists and efforts to devise one are futile. But we don t need any other means. We already possess it. For those who believe that Jesus is the Christ, it is both a present reality and a future promise. It is not merited or earned; rather, it is experienced and lived through accepting, receiving and believing Jesus is the Son of God. To possess the Son is to enter into relationship with him and into eternal life. Son of God, giver of eternal life, help me to be aware that you are with me and within me wherever I go. Saturday, January 12, Jn 5:14-21; Jn 3:22-30 There is such a thing as deadly sin. We fear offending others, which keeps us from telling them when they are wrong. As a society, we refrain from outlining moral absolutes. Right and wrong have become personally defined. Everyone operates out of his or her own situational ethics. We make excuses, depending upon who did what and under what circumstances. The problem, of course, is that there are actions that are always wrong, regardless of who is involved. We are accountable for our bad choices. Moral truth is not determined by subjective whims. A good intention cannot change inherently wrong actions into right choices. The end does not justify the means. We must do the right thing, for the right reason, and in the right way. God of wisdom and truth, give me the grace to accept my gift of free will with personal responsibility and dignity. Celebration Publications: CelebrationPublications.org

6 Sacraments: God s Gift of Grace to Us First Reconciliation on Satur day, J anuar y 12, 2019 Confirmation on Saturday, Apr il 6, 2019 First Communion on Saturday, Apr il 27, Upcoming Sacrament Related Events & Meetings 2nd Grade First Reconciliation Retreat for Parents and Students Sunday, January 6 at 1:15pm OR Monday, January 7 at 6:30pm (UGC Multi-purpose room) Church of St. Mary Religious Education Program All Religious Education classes resume this week. Intensives, Sunday morning, Tuesday afternoon, and evening! Our Lady of Perpetual Help Because our parish is named after the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Religious Education program celebrates a different devotion to Mary each year. This year we are focusing on Our Lady of Perpetual Help. In December, students in our weekly classes gathered for prayer services to learn more about OLPH and pray to her as well. Details were explained to the children to help them understand what is depicted in the iconic image of our Lady. The students were fascinated by what they heard. Parents were invited to attend the prayer services as well, and one reflected they had never learned the specifics of the icon as it was presented during the prayer service. Also incorporated was the oldest known Marian prayer, the Sub Tuum Praesidium, which was discovered in Egypt on a fragment of papyrus in the late 200 s.

8 School of St. Mary A Roman Catholic School Since 1917 For today in the city of David a savior has been born for you who is Messiah and Lord. Luke 2:11 On December 21 the School of St. Mary second graders presented the story of the first Christmas for the students at the School s Upper Grade Center and their families. While the eighth graders narrate, the second-grade students depict the Gospels of Matthew and Luke as they perform the Nativity. This beautiful tradition continues to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas.
