3 FROM THE DESK OF FR. MIKE The St. Mary s Parish Council meets monthly and serves as an advisory group to me as pastor of the parish. The Parish Council has been discussing a number of topics this year. One particular topic that the council is focusing on is how St. Mary s can be a more welcoming parish. A number of ideas and thoughts have been shared and the members of the Parish Council are in the process of bringing them to the parish for their input and participation. At a recent event at the parish I was engaged in conversation with some parishioners. They shared with me their routine on weekends. They attend the same Mass, they sit on the same side of the church, and they try to sit in the same pew. It is comfortable and it works for them. They went on to say that for years they would offer the sign of peace to those around them. They knew the physical descriptions of those they offered the sign of peace to but they didn t know the names, the stories or any specifics of the people they would offer a sign of peace. They were the people that sat near them, on the same side of church at the same Mass at the Church of St. Mary week after week, month after month, year after year. Then it happened they turned the corner of the local grocery store and the people they would greet with a sign of peace were right in front of them. What to do? Naturally, they extended a sign of peace and began talking, they learned their names and a little more about them. Having prayed with them for years, offering a sign of peace regularly at Mass, a chance encounter in town deepened their relationship. Is this your experience of the people who greet you with the sign of peace? I try to get to know parishioners by name I have been known to call Joe Chris and sometimes I call Chris Joe. I am determined to keep trying to get to know the people that call St. Mary s their Church, their parish, their spiritual home. How well do you know the people you reach out to on Sunday with the sign of peace? Are you willing to take a few minutes on the way out of Mass to introduce yourself to and get to know those you pray with on a little deeper level? Are you willing to open yourself up a little, letting others get to know you better? Are you proud of the welcoming and warm spirit of the Church of St. Mary? Would you be willing to work with the Parish Council in creating a more welcoming community here at St. Mary s? I will share your interest with Jeanne Burke, the chairperson of our Parish Council, and the other members when we meet later this month. I pray that guests and visitors, parishioners of all ages would help create and take pride in the wonderful Spirit being developed at St. Mary s! Thanks to those who have made donations to the Diaper Depot Drive supporting Catholic Charities. If you are able to support the Diaper Depot Drive this month, you are invited to help out as you are able. You can 1) pray for the success of the Diaper Drive. 2) You may donate diapers (sizes 1, 4, 5, and 6 are most needed) 3) you can make a charitable donation (write a check to Catholic Charities Diaper Depot). If you place the donation in the offertory we will make sure your donation is sent to Catholic Charities. 4) Pack diapers at the Diaper Bank. For more information please contact Catholic Charities at (847) Thank you for supporting the Catholic Campaign for Human Development in this weekend s second collection. Your help will go far in supporting this important ministry of the Church. Please join us on Thanksgiving as we celebrate the Eucharist with a Mass at 9:00am on Thursday, November 23 rd. God bless you with a joyous and renewed faith! And may you and your families have a blessed and happy Thanksgiving!

4 November 1, 2017 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, When Pope Francis announced that the First World Day of the Poor would take place on November 19, 2017, he stated that, Whenever we set out to love as Jesus loved, we have to take the Lord as our example; especially when it comes to loving the poor, reminding us once again that we should always care for our brothers and sisters affected by poverty. The Catholic Campaign for Human Development answers Christ s call to action by addressing the root causes of poverty and injustice in low-income communities through financial support of grassroots initiatives and transformative educational efforts. One such organization is the South Side Community Federal Credit Union. With the support of a CCHD grant, the SSCFCU has saved over 875 families from foreclosure through housing and credit counseling and has reinvested over $1 million in assets in the local economy through interest rate loans in neighborhoods that are otherwise vulnerable to high rates of poverty, unemployment, and financial instability. By emphasizing self-help, participation, and cooperation, the Catholic Campaign for Human Development s holistic approach leads to increased human dignity and stronger, more economically viable communities. To learn more about CCHD s impact in our communities or to donate online, please visit Your generous support of the CCHD Annual Collection, which will take place on Saturday, November 18 and Sunday, November 19, is the primary source of funding for over twenty organizations working to combat poverty and injustice in Cook and Lake Counties. It is my prayer that, as we prepare for the annual celebration of Thanksgiving Day, you consider contributing to CCHD through this secondary collection and keep its efforts in your thoughts and prayers. With every good wish, I remain, Sincerely yours in Christ, Cardinal Blase J. Cupich Archbishop of Chicago

Register today at: OPLATKI CHRISTMAS WAFERS St. Mary s will once again be offering oplatki... the traditional Christmas wafer. What are oplatki? The breaking of oplatki - Christmas wafers - is a custom that began in Poland in the 10th century and is now one of the most beloved of Polish traditions. This practice is now popular in much of Central Europe and beyond. The Christmas wafer symbolizes the unity of the family, the main pillar of society. The head of the household is seen as the link in the unbroken chain of One Body, One Bread, One Christ, and One Church, while the other family members join in this eternal procession. The oplatki wafers also symbolize forgiveness and reconciliation. Before partaking of the Christmas Eve meal, the family gathers around the table. The eldest member holds a large wafer and breaks off a piece to begin the ritual. The remaining wafer is passed on to another member while a prayer for loved ones is said. This continues, with family members exchanging wishes for peace and prosperity, until everyone at the table has a piece of the wafer. Finally, the family members consume their share prayerfully. Oplatki are also sent along with Christmas cards to loved ones who are away from home, as well as being shared with pets and farm animals. Oplatki will be available at the Parish Office beginning in early December. The suggested offering per envelope is $3.00. Each envelope contains three wafers, two white and one pink, and an explanation of the meaning and traditions. Providing parishes with oplatki is one of the basic means of financial support for the Missionary Sisters of St. Benedict of Oak Forest, Illinois. The sisters also provide the altar bread for our parish and are most appreciative of our support. For more information on the charism and ministry of the sisters, please visit: missionarysisosb.org. 6 THE RITE OF CALLING TO LAY ECCLESIAL MINISTRY On Sunday, November 5, Bishop Francis J. Kane, as delegate of Archbishop Blase Cupich, celebrated the Rite of Calling to Lay Ecclesial Ministry at a 3:00pm Mass at Mary, Seat of Wisdom Parish in Park Ridge. St. Mary s is blessed to have two staff members who participated in this rite Mrs. Jeannie Brunk, a certified Director of Religious Education and Mrs. Lore Nugent, a certified Pastoral Associate. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, the roles of pastoral associate and director of religious education have been designated as "...the roles that most clearly exemplify lay ecclesial ministry, and this rite was Archbishop Cupich s ratification of their vocation to ministry. Congratulations to Jeannie and Lore on this recognition by the Archdiocese! Mrs. Lore Nugent, Pastoral Associate; Fr. 8 PRAYER TO OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE FOR JUSTICE ost merciful mother, you came to tell us of your compassion through St. Juan Diego, whom you called the littlest and dearest of your sons. Give your strength and protection to all who live in poverty today, especially the young, elderly, and vulnerable. Plead for them to the Father, that they might experience the Divine Love tangibly in their daily lives, and that all who work for justice on behalf of the poor might grow in fortitude and humility. In these ways, manifest your charity and concern in our lives, that the weeping of humanity may be heard, and all our suffering, pain, and misfortune may be filled with divine comfort and healing. May we always know the peace of being in the cradle of your arms, and bring us safely home to your son, Jesus. Amen. 9 Mon.,Nov.20 1Mc1:10-15,41-43,54-57,62-63;Lk18:35-43 The king erected the horrible abomination upon the altar of burnt offerings. As Ordinary Time is winding down, the church tries to squeeze the stirring adventures of the Maccabees into one short week. It s like trying to tweet Harry Potter! Antiochus Epiphanes the Voldemort of our tale is actually welcomed by a submissive Israel. They love his Greek ways! So he built a gymnasium, always a sign of decadence, desecrated the Temple, and tore up and burnt the scrolls of the Law. He especially liked to watch his new subjects worship his statue while eating unclean meats. But at least one family refused to choke that food down, and the resistance was born. Stay tuned. O God, the snares of the wicked are twined about me; redeem me from their oppression! Tues., Nov Mc 6:18-31; Lk 19:1-10 Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary What he had said seemed to them utter madness. Today is for two madmen: Eleazar of the Maccabees, 90 years old yet still with enough fight in him to spit out the pork he was forced to eat; and Zacchaeus, short in stature, but big enough to stand before Jesus and give away his wealth away in a single burst. Eleazar wants to be a good example to many young people, including, let s imagine, Jesus, who must have taken his words to heart: The Lord... knows full well that, although I could have escaped death, I am suffering with joy... because of my devotion to Him. Jesus considers Zacchaeus a model, too: Today salvation has come to this house! You, O Lord, are my shield; my glory, you lift up my head! Wed., Nov Mc 7:1, 20-31; Lk 19:11-28 Cecilia, Virgin, Martyr Since it is the Creator of the universe Readings for the Thirty-third Week in Ordinary Time who shapes each one s beginning he, in his mercy, will give you back both breath and life. The Maccabees lived around the year 100 B.C.E., but they were no millennials! Their mother mocks the Greek tyrant Antiochus, while boosting her sons courage in their native language, namely, Hebrew, with the promise of resurrection. It s not the Maccabees fault Antiochus tried to erase their culture! But let us celebrate Thanksgiving in whatever language, and those family values that inspired the Maccabees, no matter how our particular family is configured. O Lord, keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings! Thurs., Nov. 23 Sir 50:22-24; 1 Cor 1:3-9; Lk 17:11-19 Thanksgiving (USA) Ten were cleansed, were they not? Where are the other nine? In 1863, when Abraham Lincoln revived the feast of Thanks giving, it was in the middle of the Civil War. Despite our sins, the President said, the Most High God hath nevertheless remembered mercy. We celebrate the bounties which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the Source from which they come. Nowadays, we have almost obliterated the beauty of this day as shopping hours trample its November 2017 peace, but perhaps a new appreciation of family helps keep the day in perspective. Diverse versions of family now bless our lives as we gather at one table together. No more civil wars, we pray! Every day will I bless you, O God, and I will praise your name forever! Fri., Nov Mc 4:36-37, 52-59; Lk 19:45-48 Andrew Dung-Lac, Priest, and Companions, Martyrs Jesus entered the temple area and proceeded to drive out those who were selling things. What great readings for Black Friday! Judas Maccabeus reclaims and reconsecrates the Temple on the anniversary of the day on which the Gentiles had defiled it, celebrating an eight-day feast now known as Hanukkah. Jesus, too, storms the Temple, which had become a mall crazed with shoppers. Black Friday, with exactly that name, also grips Honduras, where I live. And Thanksgiving Day is not even celebrated here! Income inequality kills the poor, but for the stores the whole week, the whole month, is Black Friday, till they ve squeezed every peso they can out of us. Thank God Advent is just around the corner! O Lord, in your hand are power and might; it is yours alone to give grandeur and strength to all! Sat., Nov Mc 6:1-13; Lk 20: Catherine of Alexandria, Virgin, Martyr God is not God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive. Some say Catherine of Alexandria never existed. But she was one Joan of Arc s voices, and if you can t believe a 17-year-old French girl, who can you trust? One of the Fourteen Holy Helpers, saints most often turned to in time of need, Catherine is the patron of the hospice where my sister was dying in Maybe a spiritual time machine let the wicked King Antiochus, who persecuted the Maccabees, also hear her voice: I now recall the evils I did in Jerusalem, and I am dying in bitter grief. Now it s my turn to listen. I will give you thanks to you, O Lord, with all my heart I will declare all your wondrous deeds. Celebration Publications: CelebrationPublications.org

12 School of St. Mary A Roman Catholic School Since 1917 School of St. Mary third and sixth grade buddies are teaming up with the Roberti Community House in Waukegan to provide a complete Thanksgiving dinner for six families in the Waukegan/ North Chicago area. Deputy Forlenza (School of St. Mary parent) and his K9 partner, Dax, visited both school campuses to explain the lives and jobs of K9 police units. Dax is owned by the Lake County Sheriff's Office, but lives at home with his family (when not on duty). Dax works at least 40 hours on the road and completes 24 hours of K9 training per week. Dax gets called in quite frequently to help with situations during his time off. He always has to be ready to go to work! Dax also trains with the Lake County Tactical Response Team.

14 Well done, my good and faithful servant. Since you have been faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities. MATTHEW 25:21 God expects us to nurture and develop the gifts He has given us and then generously return a portion with increase. He doesn t want us to waste or hoard the gifts He has given us; He expects us to grow our gifts, use them wisely and be generous with them. Unfortunately, many of us are not generous in proportion to all that God has given us. GiveCentral Connect GiveCentral Connect is the new, smarter way for Church giving.
