From the Desk of Fr. Mike Blessed Advent to you! For the next three Sundays we will be preparing prayerfully and faithfully for the birth of our Savior. It is a holy time. It is a joyous time. It is a special time. This weekend, the generosity of the people of St. Mary s is very evident in the outpouring of love and kindness to our sharing parish, Most Blessed Trinity. The Christmas Sharing Tree fills up many vehicles with the love, kindness, and generosity of our parishioners. The Pack the Pantry program will feed many families through the donations to the Food Pantry. On behalf of the recipients of the love, kindness, and generosity, thank you. I want to share with the larger parish community two efforts hosted by Catholic Charities that are available that may speak to the hearts and faith of our parishioners this Advent season. In 2011, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago Lake County Regional Services office in Waukegan recognized an opportunity to help close the diaper gap for families living in Lake County and created The Diaper Depot, a self-funded diaper bank that distributes diapers through agency partnerships. In 2017, Catholic Charities Diaper Depot distributed 169,765 diapers to 2,405 children throughout Lake County through different social service agencies. Each year Catholic Charities partners up with the National Diaper Bank Network to bring awareness to the diaper need. For more information please contact Lisa Roti at or lroti@catholiccharities.net about contributing to the success of the baby diaper drive. Also, each Christmas, thousands of people count on Catholic Charities to help make Christmas wishes come true. More than 14,000 children and their families are blessed every year by the generosity of residents, businesses, community groups, and parishes who provide gifts and necessities during the holiday season. You can help provide gifts for Lake County families in need! Please contact Jim Wogan at or jwogan@catholiccharities.net if you are able to participate. Advent is a wonderful time to prepare for Jesus birth. Jesus, our Lord and Savior born of love, lived in love, and sacrificed His life in love. Jesus sacrificial love is shared in many ways in the Church. In the sacrament of reconciliation we are reminded of the extent of the love of Jesus, who died on the cross for the forgiveness of sins. During the Advent season reconciliation services will be held at St. Patrick s, Holy Cross in Deerfield, and at St. Mary s. The reconciliation services begin at 7:00pm on December 17 at Holy Cross in Deerfield, on December 18 here at St. Mary s, and on December 19 at St. Patrick s. You are invited to come and share in the healing sacrament of reconciliation this Advent season at one of these celebrations of God s love and mercy. The sacrament of reconciliation is celebrated weekly at St. Mary s following the 8:00am Mass on Saturday as well as by appointment which can be arranged by calling one of the parish priests. All are invited and encouraged to celebrate the sacrament of reconciliation this Advent. Pope Benedict XVI wrote, Just as the Virgin Mother pondered in her heart on the Word made flesh, so every individual soul and the entire Church are called during their earthly pilgrimage to wait for Christ who comes and to welcome Him with faith and love ever new. In addition to the efforts already mentioned in my article, we are invited to pray for and contribute financially to the Retirement Fund for Religious Share in the Care second collection. Thank you again for your generosity demonstrated in many ways this Advent season. Indeed, preparing for the birth of our Savior is a holy time, a joyous time, a special time. God bless you with a receptive heart this Advent!

All gift items for the Christmas Sharing Tree should be dropped off this weekend - December 8 and 9 - after all Masses except 6:00pm on Sunday. Please drop off gifts at the Oakwood entrance of the School Upper Grade Center. Please contact Amy Lazzaretto (630) or Karen Larsen (847) with any questions. Thank you for your support and generosity! St. Mary s is once again offering oplatki... the traditional Christmas wafer. What are oplatki? Oplatki Christmas Wafers The breaking of oplatki - Christmas wafers - is a custom that began in Poland in the 10th century and is now one of the most beloved of Polish traditions. This practice is now popular in much of Central Europe and beyond. The Christmas wafer symbolizes the unity of the family, the main pillar of society. The head of the household is seen as the link in the unbroken chain of One Body, One Bread, One Christ, and One Church, while the other family members join in this eternal procession. The oplatki wafers also symbolize forgiveness and reconciliation. Before partaking of the Christmas Eve meal, the family gathers around the table. The eldest member holds a large wafer and breaks off a piece to begin the ritual. The remaining wafer is passed on to another member while a prayer for loved ones is said. This continues, with family members exchanging wishes for peace and prosperity, until everyone at the table has a piece of the wafer. Finally, the family members consume their share prayerfully. Oplatki are also sent along with Christmas cards to loved ones who are away from home, as well as being shared with pets and farm animals. Oplatki are now available at the Parish Office. The suggested offering per envelope is $3.00. Each envelope contains three wafers, two white and one pink, and an explanation of the meaning and traditions. Providing parishes with oplatki is one of the basic means of financial support for the Missionary Sisters of St. Benedict of Oak Forest, Illinois. The sisters also provide the altar bread for our parish and are most appreciative of our support. At the church entrances... Church of St. Mary Christmas Ornaments The School of St. Mary is selling charming ornaments that feature an inviting Christmas scene of our parish church. These were created by St. Mary s parishioner Bridget Halloran, a professional fine artist and art teacher on Chicago s North Shore. Ornaments are available for $10 (cash or check) in the north vestibule of the church after the 10:00am Mass on December 9, 16, and 23. Ornaments will also be available at the Parish Center or you may arrange to purchase an ornament by contacting Carlotta Plotner at: carlottaplotner@yahoo.com. There are Advent key chain prayers and Little Blue Books that contain prayers and reflections for the Advent season available at the church entrances. Also available are St. Mary s parish calendars for 2019, compliments of Wenban Funeral Home. Catholic Extension s 2019 Feasts & Saints calendar features works by master artists. Each curated image invokes an important faithful moment or person and is paired with short excerpts of canonical verse or scripture. Be inspired by the homilies of St. John Paul II, the Gospel of Luke, and other sacred writings.

Monday, December 10, 2018 Is 35:1-10; Lk 5:17-26 The desert and the parched land will exult. A friend related a dark time in her life when she suddenly became an unemployed single mother of two small children. Simple survival filled her thoughts during the day, but at night, her fears would overwhelm her. Although she wasn t a churchgoer, she began reading the psalms, at times only able to complete a single verse. Within them, she found a glimmer of hope and sensed she wasn t alone. That speck of hope gave her the courage to face a new day and slowly over time that glimmer grew until she knew she would be OK. The Advent season reminds me of her and countless others who struggle for hope. The season is a gift in our darkest time, reminding all who live in darkness that God s hope and light exist within every struggle we face. Say to those whose hearts are frightened: Be strong, fear not! Tuesday, December 11, 2018 Is 40:1-11; Mt 18:12-14 Will the [shepherd] not go in search of the stray? I was disturbed by a parishioner who expressed her belief that the recent violence and disasters in the world were God s punishment to us for disobeying his laws. This belief is totally at odds with Jesus parable of the lost sheep that we proclaim today. Free will carries a great responsibility and when people abuse it to turn away from God, we cannot blame God for the consequences of those actions. God mourns our rejection, we are told, and continually seeks out our return. When we answer the call, God rejoices! Would any loving parent deliberately put their children in dangerous or harmful circumstances only to teach them a lesson? I only wonder what mess the remaining 99 sheep managed to create among themselves before the shepherd returned. Loving God, when my heart grows fearful of the world s evil, help me to remember you have not given up on us. Wednesday, December 12, 2018 Zec 2:14-17 or Rv 11:19a, 12:1-6a, 10ab; Lk 1:26-38 or Lk 1:39-47 Our Lady of Guadalupe See, I am coming to dwell among you. We rarely see any depictions of the Readings for the Second Week of Advent Holy Family with dirty hands or workstained clothing. We are more comfortable picturing them as distant from the detritus of everyday human life. For many years, in fact, our Christian tradition had taught that our earthly bodies were inherently bad, dirty and sinful. Yet Advent is a celebration of the coming of Emmanuel, God with us. Our humanity is exactly what God chooses to enter into; not to condemn it but to empower its potential as the body of Christ. We celebrate the miracle of Christmas at the Eucharist as we hear the words: By the mingling of this water and wine, may we come to share in the divinity of Christ who humbled himself to share in our humanity. May we rejoice, as Mary did, in our ability to become the body through which Christ is delivered to the world. Thursday, December 13, 2018 Is 41:13-20; Mt 11:11-15 Saint Lucy, Virgin and Martyr Let anyone with ears listen! If you have ever given multistep instructions to a teenager while they are watching an electronic screen, you soon discover there is a big difference between hearing and listening when you confront partially completed tasks. I think this is how I sometimes treat Advent. I know it is an important season, but my energies are torn in so many directions and the readings and traditions have become so familiar, I become like that distracted teenager in my prayer life. In order to move from hearing to listening, from looking to seeing or from knowing to understanding, a commitment to focused awareness is required. I pray that amid the lights, tinsel and preparations for Christmas, I make that conscious effort to give God some real time with my undivided attention. May all our Advent works and prayers give you praise and thanks, O God. Friday, December 14, 2018 Is 48:17-19; Mt 11:16-19 Saint John of the Cross, Priest and Doctor of the Church Wisdom is vindicated by her works. John the Baptist and Jesus may have walked the earth before the advent of social media, but their integrity was judged by rumors similar to the modern phenomenon of fake news. John was judged to be possessed because he lived an austere lifestyle in the desert, while Jesus who lived among people without concern for their social reputation, was deemed immoral. The advice given by Jesus still holds true when he tells us that the character of a person can be discerned by the fruits produced by their words and actions. If a person s words or deeds promote hatred, fear or injustice, then we may assume that they are not people who delight in the law of the Lord. If, on the other hand, their actions lead to justice, equality and mercy, then there is a good chance God would deem them blessed. God of light, teach us to discern the way of your truth. Saturday, December 15, 2018 Sir 48:1-4, 9-11; Mt 17:9a, Elijah will indeed come and restore all things. John the Baptist was beheaded and the disciples had just witnessed a transfigured Jesus on the mountaintop flanked by Moses (the law) and Elijah (the prophets). They were questioning this vision in light of having been told by the scribes that Elijah would return to restore the broken tribes of Israel. Jesus compares John the Baptist to the prophet Elijah, both of whom confronted their civil leaders for ignoring God s teachings and abusing their power. Both were persecuted for holding the authorities accountable for their actions. The world has always needed prophets like John and Elijah to remind its leaders that they are responsible for the well-being of many. Unfortunately, leaders still use their power to forcibly silence those prophets brave enough to hold them accountable to truth and justice. Give courage, O Lord, to the Elijahs of today who call us all to live with integrity. Celebration Publications: CelebrationPublications.org

Through service, we give of ourselves, not because we want something in return but as a model of Christ s love for others. One service opportunity seventh graders can select as part of their preparation for Confirmation is Project Linus. Students working on this project first shop for fleece material and cut it to size. Then they gather together to make blankets which are provided to critically ill or traumatized children. Last month, 7th graders of the parish from the School of St. Mary and Religious Ed program worked together to complete 28 blankets which Project Linus will deliver to hospitals in order to comfort the needy recipients.

School of St. Mary A Roman Catholic School Since 1917 The School of St. Mary resembles Santa s workshop, brimming with colorful toys, engaging games, warm clothing, useful appliances, and countless gifts galore. In support of the Christmas Sharing Tree at the Church of St. Mary, Primary Grade Center students played Santa s elves. Each of the classrooms in kindergarten through third grade adopted a family from the tree. With the assistance of their parents, the children selected items from a wish list to make Christmas a little merrier for nine families. Every student came to the office to wrap these special gifts of love. In the classrooms, the students also wrote Christmas cards to their Sharing Tree family. From the smiles on the faces of the children, it was obvious that they learned the important lesson, it is better to give than to receive.
