3 Pastor s Notes ON SABBATICAL I am writing this column as I head out the door to begin a three-month sabbatical. Please know that I will miss seeing everyone, and that you are remembered in my daily prayers and Masses. Please remember me in your daily prayers, too. Father Terry McCarthy, the temporary administrator, had a wonderful meeting with the priests, deacons and staff last week. I know that everything will go smoothly while I am away and I look forward to sharing stories about the sabbatical when I return. In the meantime, as St. Augustine wrote: Remember me at the altar. WELCOME FATHER TERRY MCCARTHY Archbishop Cupich has appointed Father Terry McCarthy as the temporary administrator of the Church of St. Mary. A life long resident of the Chicago Illinois area, Father McCarthy graduated from Loras college in Dubuque, Iowa with a degree in Economics. After a number of years working in Business and Industry he served in the Army Security Agency during the Cuban crisis and Kennedy assassination. Entering the seminary at St. Mary of the Lake Mundelein Illinois as a late vocation, he was ordained for the Archdiocese of Chicago in He ministered as Associate Pastor at St. James, Highwood Illinois for six years and St. Marcelline in Schaumburg Illinois for six years. He then served as Pastor of St. Anastasia, Waukegan Illinois for 15 years and Immaculate Conception in Highland Park Illinois for 6 years. He is active as Fire Chaplain for Highland Park, Board Member of Catholic Charities, Lake County and Stauros USA while continuing his priestly ministries. Father McCarthy is a very caring and compassionate priest. He is also a poor golfer, so if you are looking to put together a foursome on the links, give Father McCarthy a call. BISHOP-ELECT ROBERT BARRON The Most Reverend Robert Barron, who will be ordained a bishop in Los Angeles on September 8, will be with us on Sunday, August 9, and will offer the 10:30am Mass. We will miss seeing him at the altar of St. Mary on a regular basis, but pray that the Holy Spirit infuse him with the gifts necessary for his ministry as a bishop. Bishop-elect Barron has made many friends at St. Mary over the years, and I speak for the entire parish in assuring him of our continued prayers and friendship. In our Lord, Fr. Mike McGovern

RCIA (The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) is a program for people who would like to become Catholic. Tootsie Roll Drive September 18-19, 2015 All proceeds from the Knights of Columbus Lake Forest Council 1268 Drive benefit individuals who have physical or mental challenges or developmental delays. Ten percent of the proceeds go to the State of Illinois Knights of Columbus who in turn use these funds to provide home loans for individuals with special needs as well as provide funding for Special Olympics. The remaining 90% of the money is divided equally among the Church of St. Mary SPRED program and the St. Patrick SPRED Program. We Need Volunteers Please consider volunteering for this worthy cause. The Anointing of the Sick is one of the Church's seven sacraments instituted by Christ. In this sacrament, the Church proclaims her belief in Christ's power over the pain and suffering of illness. This is a powerful way to meet the Lord and receive strength and mercy from Him. Receive incredible insight into why He needed to reveal His name to Moses and the Hebrew people. See the importance of what this means to us today in our daily lives. Along with this learn the importance of God s law and the significance it had then and still has now in the covenant of love that God wants to maintain with His people. The Sabbath and its observance have special meaning and implications in this covenantal relationship. All of this is shrouded under the cloak of freedom. 2016: The Prophets: Messengers of Mercy If we consider that God is the Divine Bridegroom and the Church is His Bride, then the prophets can be seen as spiritual marriage counselors. They afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted, calling us to return to our covenant relationship with God. They urge us to repentance, warn us of the dangers of sin, and announce the blessings of faithfulness. Their prophetic words speak to us even today, as they draw us closer to our heavenly Bridegroom, and show us how to share Him with others. 7 Religious Education Program St. Mary s 2015 Wilderness Adventure Vacation Bible School was wild! During the last week of July, 103 children were engaged in an active, fun- illed week in Vacation Bible School. Through Bible stories, the lives of the saints, and a wonderful teaching Mass by Father Michael Grzesik, the participants learned how to better understand the seven Sacraments and deepen their love for Jesus. The children enjoyed a variety of activities such as crafts, games, music, snacks and skits to help them grow in their Catholic faith. It was a wonderful week illed with the joy and love of Christ!

Without sacrifice there is no love. -St. Maximilian Kolbe St. Maximilian Kolbe was a Franciscan Priest and is a Martyr of the Catholic Church. He was imprisoned in Auschwitz Concentra on Camp during WWII. Maximilian was sentenced to death in 1941 when he volunteered to take the place of another prisoner. His feast day is August 14.
