3 FROM THE DESK OF FR. MIKE Today is the fourth Sunday of our Lenten journey of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. At the midway point of this season of grace and renewal we can vaguely recall the start of the season on Ash Wednesday, and seek to focus our hearts and prayers on the joy and the glory of the Resurrection celebrated on Easter Sunday. Fr. Simpson led us this past week in our Parish Mission. His prayer for his time with us was that he would be an instrument for God at St. Mary s. As you live Lent 2018, how have you been an instrument for God? How may God be using you in the remaining weeks as His instrument? Enriched by the Holy Spirit may we give thanks for the many ways we are God s instruments bringing hope, bringing peace, bringing compassion, bringing mercy, bringing joy and bringing Christ to others. The 33 rd Kairos retreat began this past Thursday evening. Your prayers that the students attending the Kairos grow in their faith are welcome and appreciated. The Kairos retreat is being led by sixteen of our generous and faith-filled teenagers. Over the last three months they have planned, they have prepared and they have prayed that God would use them as instruments for the 45 of their peers and classmates that are attending the Kairos retreat, that concludes Sunday evening. Thanks to the young adult team, Norie Kaufmann, Maggie Slingerland, Joseph Santello, and our Youth Minister Terese Halm for sharing their faith with our teens attending the Kairos program. This weekend you have the wonderful opportunity to support the Food Pantry of our Sharing Parish, Most Blessed Trinity in Waukegan. Contributions can be dropped off until 1:00pm Sunday afternoon to the Oakwood entrance to the school. Thanks for caring for those in need this Lent, putting food on the plates of our sisters and brothers. Every bag donated helps us reach the goal of 400 bags of food and household items delivered this Sunday. The second collection taken up at Mass today is for Most Blessed Trinity Parish. May God bless you for your kindness and generosity in support of the Most Blessed Trinity Food Pantry. The Guild of St. Mary is hosting their annual Senior Citizens Luncheon this coming Wednesday, March 14 th. It is a wonderful celebration led by the Women s Guild. Our school students welcome and serve the seniors a wonderful and delicious lunch. Thanks to the members of the Guild for offering our seniors the chance to come together for meal and friendship. Next Saturday is the Luck of the Crusaders celebration. This event, hosted by the School of St. Mary s Parent s Association is open to adults and will be held at Lake Forest Club beginning at 7:00pm on St. Patrick s Day, March 17 th. This event is open to parishioners and friends of St. Mary s. Tickets are available at the door but it is appreciated if you would purchase them ASAP so final plans and details can be properly coordinated. I look forward to being part of this joyous and wonderful celebration supporting our school. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is being celebrated this coming Wednesday, March 14th at St. Patrick s at 7:00pm and at Holy Cross in Deerfield next Thursday, March 22 nd at 7:00pm. You are encouraged to celebrate God s healing love and mercy. God be with you with a renewed heart this Lenten season.

We are grateful for your gifts of food and volunteering. For information, please call Ellen Tierney at Spring Break Soap Drive March 11 - April 9 Taking a trip this spring? During the month of March through Spring Break please consider collecting unused/unopen small hotel-sized bottles of soap, shampoo, body wash, conditioner & lotion. We are also accepting feminine products, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, razors and other personal hygiene items. PLEASE NO OPEN/EXPIRED ITEMS. Collection will benefit the Food Pantry at Most Blessed Trinity and other local ministries. Baskets are located at all Church Entrances, the Parish Center, and both School Offices thru Sunday, April 8. Greet your fellow worshipers before Mass on Saturdays and Sundays! Individuals and families are encouraged to sign up and join the new Greeters Ministry. Volunteering is simple, easy, and convenient. You get to pick the door you want to greet and you decide if you want to be inside the door or outside. It is that easy. Visit the parish website (churchofstmary.org), find the Greeters Ministry under the Ministries tab, and sign in on the Google doc. Come and join us to greet at the beginning of our beautiful Mass. For more information about this Ministry, please call Faith Favale ( ) or Jeanne Burke ( ). St. Mary's Refugee Ministry In a spirit of compassion, let us embrace all those fleeing from war and hunger, or forced by discrimination, persecution, poverty and environmental degradation to leave their homelands. We would like to introduce you to Rizinde (31), Claudina (28), Josianha (4½ ) and Alice (1½). This is the family that St Mary s is sponsoring who now live in West Rogers Park. They had been in a refugee camp in Uganda for 20 years before arriving in the US. Both parents are now enrolled in ESL (English as a Second Language) classes. Rizinde speaks pretty well. Claudina is shy. She probably knows more than she seems to. The two little girls are all smiles. This has to be such a culture shock to them, but they are so happy to be here! Keep them in your prayers. The Refugee Ministry will be meeting on Friday, March 16 at 7:00pm in the Parish Center. All who are interested are invited to attend. Please contact Anne Taylor if you have questions:

5 Monday, March 12, 2018 Is 65:17-21; Ps 30; Jn 4:43-54 I created Jerusalem to be a joy and its people to be a delight. I begin each Lent with a promise to deepen my commitment and understanding of my baptismal promises. By this week of Lent, however, my best intentions are often reduced to dietary restrictions and a few extra prayers. These are easier to commit to than making changes in basic attitudes and behaviors. This week, I want to refresh my Lenten renewal. In light of today s readings, I vow to make a better effort to change my habit of being critical and pessimistic and live with more joy and delight. Which of my life s circumstances can I re-examine with eyes of more hope? Who irritates me daily that I need to re-see through the eyes of God s love? May I rejoice in my life and exult in Your people. Tuesday, March 13, 2018 Ez 47:1-9, 12; Ps 46; Jn 5:1-16 Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up. Ezekiel speaks of water flowing out from the temple of the Lord which renews, heals and enriches all that it touches, while Jesus encounters a man who has no one to help him reach the healing waters of the pool of Bethesda. The Eucharist and my community of faith have been a source of healing and renewal in my own life. Yet, there are many who are unable to share in this healing prayer. Could I help someone who is no longer able to walk or drive to Mass? How can I help someone who cannot share at our table because they are committed to the care of an elderly parent or disabled spouse or child? Use my hands and feet, generous Lord, that others may also come to share in your healing gifts. Wednesday, March 14, 2018 Is 49:8-15; Ps 145; Jn 5:17-30 Even should [a mother forget her infant] I will never forget you. Many lives have been devastated in the past few years by hurricanes, floods, Readings for the Fourth Week of Lent earthquakes, wildfires, and seemingly unending violence. Months (even years) later, many are still waiting for the means to rebuild their lives. For many, it feels as though they ve been forgotten by God and abandoned by their fellow humanity. Isaiah reminds us that God will never forget them, while Jesus reminds us that we are to allow this faithful God to work through our hands and hearts on God s behalf. While the mainstream media may have moved on to new stories of interest, how can I be a reminder to those who struggle to regain stability and hope, that we have not abandoned or forgotten them? Through our prayers and actions, O Saving God, you raise up all those who are bowed down. Thursday, March 15, 2018 Ex 32:7-14; Ps 106; Jn 5:31-47 You accept praise from one another and do not seek the praise that comes from the only God? A group of young immigrants attended a local football game in support of their new school s team and to take in a typical teenage experience. Unaware, they sat amidst a group of fans for the opposing team, some of whom began mocking their accent and taunting them to Go back to where you came from! One quickthinking student who witnessed the abuse, sent a wide-spread text message which led the abusive fans themselves to be surrounded by a chant of Don t be racist! Would I have reacted with the same integrity or would I have taken an easier route of silence? Where do I need to stop creating excuses that support inaction toward even small injustices? O God of love, give me courage to testify on behalf of your will as Jesus did. Friday, March 16, 2018 Wis 2:1a, 12-22; Ps 34; Jn 7:1-2, 10, We know where he is from. Some people in Jerusalem, upon hearing Jesus teach, were confused about his identity. Their leaders wanted to kill him yet he seemed to speak with authority about God and Moses. Could he be the Messiah? In the end, they decided he couldn t be because he was only from Galilee. I m ashamed to say I have also made horrible assumptions about people based on their appearance, their accent, their place of origin or their job. Have I assumed to know someone without taking the time to really converse with them? With whom do I need to swallow my fear or pride and open the doors of communication so that I may come to know them better as individuals and God s beloved children? God of love and truth, may I always seek understanding and justice, and persevere in their pursuit. Saturday, March 17, 2018 Jer 11:18-20; Ps 7; Jn 7:40-53 Does our law condemn a man before it first hears him and finds out what he is doing? Although Nicodemus attempts to hear both sides of the story, the Pharisees are only interested in hearing arguments that support their own desired agenda. Assumptions are upheld and judgements are made based on half-truths. Gossip and rumor often hold our attention much longer than the details needed to discern the truth. I ve been guilty of adding my two cents worth of misguided opinion to a discussion before I have heard alternative versions of an event. Where might I find those quiet voices that are sometimes drowned out by the loud and impatient? Who in my community has no one to whom they can voice their story or concerns? Who needs my listening heart? Place a guard over my mouth, dear Master, that I may hear your voice above all others. Celebration Publications: CelebrationPublications.org

6 Church of St. Mary Religious Education Program Throughout these 40 days of Lent, students are spending time learning about the practices and traditions of Lent and Holy Week as well as what they can do to make this holy season fruitful. Special Lent calendars, activities, and daily prayer reflection booklets appropriate for each grade level were sent home at the beginning of Lent. Along with the rest of the parish, classes are practicing almsgiving by collecting money for the Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowl Project. Students were invited to participate in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Catechists also led their pupils through the Stations of the Cross as a pilgrimage, helping them remember how Jesus walked the Way of the Cross. 10 For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son JOHN 3:16 Of all the wonderful gifts that God has given to us, the gift of His own Son is truly the greatest. How can we ever thank God for a gift like that? God does not ask us to sacrifice our own precious firstborn, but He does ask that we are grateful and generous with our God-given gifts.
