3 FROM THE DESK OF FR. MIKE Last month a letter was read at the weekend Masses from Cardinal Cupich regarding the Renew my Church process of the Archdiocese. The letter was printed in last week s bulletin and is available through the parish website. At a recent Staff Meeting we reflected on this letter and its impact for us as members of the Church of St. Mary. One of the foci of the Renew my Church process is vocations. Last weekend in an address Pope Francis stated that he is concerned about what he calls a hemorrhage of priests and nuns from the Catholic Church. Pope Francis stated that this shortage is weakening the Church. Last weekend, when praying with a family after Mass, I learned that one of their sons is actively discerning a religious vocation. He is being supported in this discernment as he continues to pray for guidance from the Holy Spirit. As you read this article today, how can you increase your support of religious vocations? Is there a family member, a son, a daughter, a niece, a nephew, a neighbor that you can encourage to discern the movement of God in their life? Today, many of the men and women entering into seminary and religious life do so as a second or third career. Through prayer and support, they find the longing within their life, heart and spirit to be answered by God as they pray through the possibility of a vocation in the Church. Fr. Michael Grzesik is in the process of forming a Vocations Ministry here at St. Mary s. One of the goals of this ministry is directly finding ways to support vocations in our parish. If you would like to learn more about this please speak with him as soon as possible. The next time you go to Eucharistic Adoration, I ask that you pray for vocations. The next time you pray the rosary, I ask that you pray for vocations. There are many gifted, faithful and generous men and women that can serve the Church in a religious vocation. May our prayers, support and encouragement bring forth vocations from St. Mary s in the next generation of believers. You are invited to a workshop later this month looking at one of the best kept secrets of the Catholic Church. What may that be, you are asking yourself? The answer being Catholic Social Teaching. Pope Francis has brought renewed emphasis to the concept of Biblical justice and the principles of Catholic Social Teaching derived from it. He has challenged us to be a church that protects and creates policies for the common good, one that reaches out to the fringes of society. But how can we most effectively be that Church if we don t have a full understanding of, and appreciation for, Catholic Social Teaching? In this upcoming workshop they will explore the Biblical roots of social justice, the development of Catholic social principles, and a variety of ways in which we can become involved in alleviating the suffering of our most vulnerable brothers and sisters. This workshop is being offered at St. Mary of the Annunciation located at W. Erhart Road in Mundelein on Saturday, February 25 th. The workshop is being held from 9:00 AM 12:00 Noon. The workshop will take place in the big church and is handicapped accessible. Anyone interested in social justice issues is invited to contact Deacon Dennis Brown at dgbrown52@aol.com or call the parish at (847) God bless you in being instruments of Christ s peace!

4 ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO Office of the Archbishop 835 North Rush Street Chicago, IL archchicago.org Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, All of us in the Church need to be grateful for the ways that God is renewing the Church in our time. The leadership of Pope Francis and our own local efforts promise to reinvigorate our life together as God s people and our mission in the world. Ultimately, the energy for this renewal stems from love, the same love echoed in the theme of this year s Annual Catholic Appeal: Love Your Neighbor as Yourself. With love, the Annual Catholic Appeal enables us to connect with each other and take responsibility for each other. The Annual Catholic Appeal makes our love of neighbor real and close. How does this happen? The Appeal helps to sustain Catholic schools and parishes, support programs of religious education, ministerial formation and the many initiatives for the protection of life and the promotion of peace and justice. Through Catholic Relief Services, the Appeal also funds loving help to neighbors who are far away but who are our neighbors in need. Join me and many others across the Archdiocese to express our love, our connection and our responsibility for one another. Given the present need of the Archdiocese of Chicago, your gift will mean that you have heard the Lord s word, love your neighbor as yourself, and that you have put it into practical action. We will be good stewards of your gift. I also want to remind you that once your parish reaches its goal, 100% of the over-goal contributions will be returned to your parish. As you prayerfully consider your gift to the Annual Catholic Appeal, know that you have the gratitude of the many people your neighbors whom you will help. You also have my gratitude and, of course, my prayers. May the good Lord renew all of us in His Church with a spirit of loving concern and responsibility for one another. Sincerely yours in Christ, Cardinal Blase J. Cupich Archbishop of Chicago

5 Readings for Ordinary Time Mon., Feb. 6: Gn 1:1-19; Mk 6:53-56 Paul Miki and companions, martyrs God saw how good it was. When you stop to think about it, God did an incredibly awesome job of creating this world in which we live. Everything is in balance, living in harmony. And after each act of creation, what did God do? God saw that it was good. The goodness of creation is goodness in and of itself, just because it is. Skies and seas, mountains and valleys, rain and snow, trees and plants, animals and fish. Tues., Feb. 7: Gn 1:20-2:4a; Mk 7:1-13 Let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and the cattle, and over all the wild animals and creatures that crawl upon the ground. God s creation is a finely tuned network of interdependent relationships. As human beings, we are a part of God s creation, but we are also apart from creation. God gave humans unique powers and authority, powers that are meant to be used carefully and creatively. Our role is to be stewards of God s creation, but all too often we see the earth and its resources as commodities that we can use, exploit and destroy. We do not see creation as a community to which we belong. For wisdom and courage to live as stewards of your creation, we pray. Wed., Feb. 8: Gn 2:4b-9, 15-17; Mk 7:14-23 The Lord God formed man out of the clay of the ground and blew into his nostrils the breath of life, and so man became a living being. Even though I grew up in the church, I think I was in college before I realized that there isn t just one creation story in Genesis. The first chapter is one story, with the litany of days and what God created on each day. In that account, humans are created last and given instructions to fill the earth and subdue it. In the second story, humans are created first, and then God plants a garden in Eden and settles the man there to cultivate and care for it. Although they are different, these creation stories both ask the question, Why are we here? Both accounts give the same answer: We are here to care for God s creation. For your grace as we seek to be faithful stewards, we pray. Thurs., Feb. 9: Gn 2:18-25; Mk 7:24-30 It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a suitable partner for him. As this creation story continues, God realizes that the human being needs companions. Therefore, God creates all kinds of animals, but none of them are suitable partners for the man. Then God creates another human being, a woman, to be the first human s partner. The other creatures could not meet this need for human relationship. We were created by God to be in equal, mutual relationship with each other. Some might argue that the more I m around some people, the more I like my dog, but it is our relationships whether broken or fulfilling, painful or wonderful that help us become the people God intends us to be. We give thanks, Love Divine, for companionship, love and community in all its many forms. Fri., Feb. 10: Gn 3:1-8; Mk 7:31-37 Scholastica, religious The woman saw that the tree was good for food, pleasing to the eyes, and desirable for gaining wisdom. The Garden of Eden. Paradise. Think lush green ferns, warm breezes, peace, plenty of sunshine. It s a place where nothing is broken, a place where God s shalom still reigns, a place where you could walk around naked and not even realize you re naked as long as you stay away from the fruit of one particular tree. But the woman doesn t stay away. She has a remarkable conversation with a serpent, eats fruit from that one particular tree, and Paradise is gone forever. The humans know they re naked, they know they re guilty, and so they hide from the strong, kind presence of God their creator and friend. Guide and direct the choices we make, O God. Sat., Feb. 11: Gn 3:9-24; Mk 8:1-10 You have eaten, then, from the tree of which I had forbidden you to eat! God comes to the garden, looking for Adam and Eve. Where are you? God asks, and the excuses start flying. Adam blames Eve for giving him the fruit, and then Eve blames the serpent for tricking her. In the end, they are all punished: pain for Eve, toil for Adam, and banishment for the serpent. How did they survive the loss of paradise? That is part of the story, too: They did survive. They decided to live. The days of peace and plenty were gone, but they were able to create a future for themselves in the world outside Eden the world in which we live today. We yearn for your presence with us, Divine Creator, on this side of Eden. 9 Church of St. Mary Religious Education Program As they continue their studies and prepare for Confirmation, eighth grade students from the Religious Education program and the School of St. Mary participated in Confirmation retreats on January 21 and January 28 at St. Mary s Upper Grade Center. Father Michael Knotek, our retreat leader, focused on using the gifts of the Holy Spirit to aid oneself in making moral decisions and in all aspects of life. Dynamic high school leaders, led by our Youth Minister Terese Halm, worked with students in small groups and formed a panel discussing how to live out one s Catholic faith in high school. The retreat ended beautifully with the students receiving letters from their parents and sponsor as well as spending time in adoration before Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. Students prayed a Litany of Saints with their Confirmation names to close the day.
