3 Pastor s Notes THOUGHTS ON HOLY WEEK I was very moved by the liturgies of Holy Week. Despite many people being out of town during spring break for schools, the church was full for most of the services. The outpouring of earnest prayer, attentive listening and reverence on Good Friday at St. Mary was a blessing. Did you notice the joy on people's faces when they extended the Sign of Peace to one another on Easter Sunday? There is something special about extending the peace of the Risen Christ to your family that surrounds you on Easter, because those are the people we want to share eternal life with one day in heaven. May the Risen Lord bless our families and our parish with his presence, light and life in the Easter Season. Alleluia! EASTER AT ST. MARY Last Sunday was a beautiful celebration of Easter. The sunshine helped to put a smile on everyone's face as thousands of people gathered to celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. Thanks to Fathers Brendan Guilfoil, Michael Grzesik and Ron Kunkel for offering Mass and being available for the Sacrament of Penance during Lent and Holy Week. Thank you to our deacons Jack Herrmann and Bob Thomas for leading Morning Prayer and assisting at the liturgies during the Sacred Triduum. CONGRATULATIONS At the Easter Vigil on March 26, Carmine Cesario was baptized; Pia Augustin, Kaylee Gamble, Matt Garrigan, and Andy Zimmerman were received into the Catholic Church. All of them received the Sacrament of Confirmation and the Eucharist. Congratulations to them as they begin sharing in our Catholic faith. THANK YOU My sincere thanks to the parish staff and many volunteers who helped us celebrate Holy Week and Easter in such a prayerful way. John Chapman, our music director, the cantors and choir provided inspiring music throughout the week (the music at 10:30am on Easter was superb!). Thank you to John Looby and Lake Forest Flowers for decorating the sanctuary with beautiful springtime flowers. I am very grateful to Ron Sevcik and all of the parish ushers for greeting thousands of people at the many liturgies. Thank you to Patrick Looby and all the lectors who graciously proclaimed God s Holy Word at the liturgies. Kudos to the altar servers who assisted with each Mass. A Blessed Easter Season to all! DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY Sunday, April 3 is Divine Mercy Sunday. Once again, St. Mary s parishioners have organized a special time for Mass and the celebration of this devotion. Mass will be in our church at 2:00pm and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy and Confession will follow at 3:00pm. COME, HOLY SPIRIT On Saturday, April 9 we welcome Bishop George Rassas to our parish for the Sacrament of Confirmation. Adolescents growing up today urgently need the help of the Holy Spirit. Please join me in praying that the Spirit s gifts will fill the hearts, minds and souls of the young people and help them stay close to Christ throughout their lives. GALA THANK YOU Thank you to the School of St. Mary Parents Association for their creative presentation of the GALA on March 12. It was a terrific evening of food and entertainment in support of our school. Thank you to the cochairs Cristina Abbagnaro and Trish Ciesinski, for the countless hours spent making this event so special. I am grateful for their positive attitude in putting together a fun evening for three hundred guests. Thank you to all the people who donated their time, talents and resources so that we can provide an excellent Catholic education to the families of our community. Continued on the next page

4 The Birds and The Bees Theology of The Body for Parents Wednesday, April 6 at 7:30pm in the Parish Center Conference Room Parents & all adults are welcome as our Youth Minister Alli Smith gives a presentation on Theology of the Body and how to share it with young people. It will be geared towards parents of middle and high school students, though it is open to all. There will also be time for Q&A and sharing resources for further study. New St. Mary s Men s Club Kick-Off Meeting! Special Speaker: Harry Kraemer The 3 Parts to Contemporary Catholic Life: Work, Family, Faith How Do They All Fit Together? Building on our St. Mary s Men s Conference last fall, we are hosting periodic get-togethers for the men of the parish for fellowship, faith-building, and fun! Our first event will be on Monday, April 18, at 7:00pm in the Multipurpose Room in the St. Mary s Upper Grade Center. We will be honored to have with us the renowned author, professor, and motivational speaker Harry Kraemer, former CEO of Baxter Laboratories. The event will last from 7:00 to 8:30pm, and will include opportunities for questions and answers, beer, snacks, and more surprises. Come and join us, and bring your friends! Friday Night at the Movies OF GODS AND MEN The movie is based on the true story of 8 French Trappist monks living in the mountains of Algeria in The monks live peacefully in a predominantly Muslim community, yet there is a growing threat to the monks safety due to the presence of extremist guerillas. Should the monks leave or remain? The issues the film explores are issues relevant to our world today. Join us in the Parish Center Conference Room on Friday, April 22 at 7:00pm. Please note that the film is in French with English subtitles. Morning with Mary Continued from the previous page CHILD SAFETY MONTH The month of April is Child Safety month. As a parish, we are committed to the protection of children. Since the Catholic bishops of our country adopted the Dallas Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People in 2002, important processes are in place so that parish employees and volunteers who will be working with children are screened. We also require training so that adults are sensitized to the horror of child sexual abuse, and are given information that can help create a safe environment for all children. If you have any suggestions about how to make St. Mary a safer environment, please contact me or any member of the parish staff. Thank you. A Blessed Easter! 5 Guild of St. Mary News The annual Senior Citizen Luncheon sponsored by the Guild and the School of St. Mary was a great success. Over 125 guests were served lunch by the students with the help of the St. Jude and St. Patrick Circles. The guests enjoyed the lunch on placemats designed by the children and were entertained by our young musical students. The seniors played bingo and left with a box filled with cookies made by the Circles and prizes won in bingo. The warmer weather provided a lovely background for the day. This event would not have been possible without the help of many people, specifically the children of St. Mary, the helping hands of the Guild ladies and all who baked cookies. A special thank you to Debbie Sternberg and Patti Shovlin who chaired this event. Thank you ladies! Thank you to all who participated in the Easter Sharing Tree. St. Gwendoline Circle did an awesome job of distributing the eggs on the weekend of, February 20 and 21, and the basket collection on the weekend of March 12 and 13. The families of our sharing parish in Waukegan had lovely baskets on Easter morning. Again, thank you to of all our volunteers who helped load and drive the baskets to Waukegan and the families of St. Mary. We could not have done this without your help! Archbishop Cupich wants your input. ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO PARISHIONER SURVEY When Archbishop Cupich announced the Renew My Church initiative in January, he invited everyone in the Archdiocese of Chicago to participate in the process of revitalizing our parish communities. Just as Pope Francis asked Catholics across the globe for their input prior to the Synod of Bishops meetings in 2014 and 2015, Archbishop Cupich is asking for your help as the Archdiocese begins a new listening phase of this important effort. Please take time to respond to a survey designed to help Archbishop Cupich and the Archdiocese better understand the perspectives of Catholics across Cook and Lake Counties. Dressed in a purple cover, this seemingly small storybook captures the memories that changed history and humanity s destiny forever.

7 Religious Education Program Be strong and of good courage; be not frightened, neither be dismayed; for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go. -Joshua 1:9 During the months of March, April and May, the Religious Ed program is focusing on the life of St. George and the virtue of Courage. By focusing on this holy saint, students are learning to be courageous and stand up for the truth, even if it is dif icult. St. George reminds us that courage is the ability to overcome fear through the power of God s grace. In order to learn more about this great saint, students from the 4 th grade classes led prayer services which focused on the life of St. George and the virtue of Courage.
