3 FROM THE DESK OF FR. MIKE MERRY CHRISTMAS! HAPPY NEW YEAR! May all of our parishioners, guests and visitors during this sacred time of year be strengthened in faith through the celebration of the Eucharist at our parish this Christmas season. We acknowledge and celebrate the sixteen days of the Christmas season as a faith-filled believing people. May the reason for the season permeate our celebrations, our prayers and our lives. I received the following from a friend of the parish, Nicolle Curtis who resides in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Dear Lord, Almighty Savior, Dearest God Above, I ask that you encompass this church with mercy, knowledge, and love. Call Your children to fill the pews. Awaken their hearts to Your merciful truth. Grant light to priests that they may recognize Your will. And to restless hearts, grant them peace, let them be still. Bless those working in each crevice of this parish. For they are Chosen Souls, which you particularly cherish. Send the guardian angels You have assigned to me To stand forever with the children and guard them with peace. Let all doubts vanish, fears and sorrows disappear. Remind the congregation of Your presence here. Tear the veils drawn over their eyes. So that they may see You as I do, in every instant of their lives Encourage them to spend time wandering in nature. For it is here where we are surrounded by living things, all sharing the same Creator. Call all mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, sisters, and brothers To see You when looking upon another Help them to quiet their minds so Your voice may be heard. Light a fire within them, a soulful rebirth. Pull them closer to Your Son, Jesus Christ Redeemer of Souls. And in their pursuit of You, let them be made whole My Father, My Love, My Confidant, My Glorious Savior Help them to mirror you in each and every behavior. Let us shine like diamonds made from dust and ash Reflecting Your light with every moment we pass. Together we rejoice, for the war has already been won. By the power of the Father, The Son and the Holy Spirit The Holy Trinity united as One. AMEN. In the New Year there will be many opportunities at St. Mary s to work together, to share, to serve, to be Church together. One such opportunity is a meeting on Monday, January 16 th at 7:00 PM in the Parish Office. At that meeting we will review the many Social Justice and Human Concern ministries that currently take place through the generosity of parishioners at St. Mary s. If you would like to learn more about these ministries, how you can get more involved as well as share hopes for the coming year please let me or Deacon Jack Herrmann know of your interest. All are welcome to attend. Thanks to everyone who has generously supported St. Mary s with a contribution to the Christmas collection. God bless for your kindness and generosity. In the words of Tiny Tim in the holiday classic "Christmas Carol" - God bless us everyone! MERRY CHRISTMAS! HAPPY NEW YEAR!

4 Octave of Christmas Readings Mon., Jan. 2: 1 Jn 2:22-28; Jn 1:19-28 Basil the Great and Gregory Nazianzen, bishops and doctors of the church This is the testimony of John. As different as the four Gospels are, they all include John the Baptist. Mark s Gospel paints an image of a rather strange wild man in camel s hair and leather, yet John s Gospel gives no such details. Here we must figure out who John is by how he responds to the priests and Levites: Who are you? I am not the Christ. Are you Elijah? I am not. Are you the Prophet? No. Who are you? I am the voice. John knew he wasn t the promised Messiah; he was the messenger who prepared the way. May our lives bear witness to your love and grace, Lord Jesus. Tues., Jan. 3: 1 Jn 2:29-3:6; Jn 1:29-34 Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. John the Baptist s tes-timony continues, and even though he admits that he did not recognize Jesus, he knew his call was to prepare the people of Israel for his coming. John gives Jesus an important title: Lamb of God. This would have been a familiar image for John s readers. Before the Exodus, the Hebrews were instructed to kill a lamb and smear its blood on doorposts so that God would pass over that house and they would be saved from the tenth and final plague. Years later, Christians described Jesus as the lamb who died to take away the sin of the world. Lamb of God, have mercy on us. Wed., Jan. 4: 1 Jn 3:7-10; Jn 1:35-42 Elizabeth Ann Seton, religious You are Simon, son of John; you will be called Cephas, which is translated Peter. There are several stories in the Hebrew and Christian Testaments in which people receive new names, but none is better known than Peter s. It seems that he was given the name Simon by his parents, but Jesus gives him the name Cephas, which is Aramaic for rock. The Greek Petros Peter also means rock. The name Jesus gives Si-mon is quite a compliment, especially since Jesus has just met Simon. Since rock is frequently used to describe God, calling anyone else a rock was a tremendous affirmation of their character. No Jew would use the word without thinking of God. Jesus, what name would you give me? Thurs., Jan. 5: 1 Jn 3:11-21; Jn 1:43-51 John Neumann, bishop Come and see. Forty-some verses into John s Gospel, and Jesus has already called two disciples, Andrew and his brother Simon Peter. Jesus then goes to Galilee and finds Philip. It seems safe to speculate that Andrew, Simon Peter and Philip spend some time with Jesus an evening? a week? and thus come to believe that he is, in fact, the promised Messiah. Then Philip finds his friend Nathanael and tells him, We have found the one the one we have been waiting and praying for, the one the prophets wrote about Jesus, son of Joseph, from Nazareth. When Nathanael is skeptical, Philip says simply, Come and see. This simple invitation come and see for yourself is the foundation for all evangelism and discipleship. May we invite others to follow you by our lives and our words. Fri., Jan. 6: 1 Jn 5:5-13; Mk 1:7-11 You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased. What I find absolutely remarkable about these words is that they are said before Jesus has done anything. According to Mark, he has performed no miracles, done no public teaching; he hasn t debated the Pharisees on matters of theology and religious practice. There have been no courageous acts in the face of political oppression or religious hypocrisy. Jesus has done nothing to speak of. Of course, our world is very different; we do not get recog-nized and affirmed simply for being. The good news is that the message of Jesus baptism and our own is that God says to each and every one of us: You are my beloved child; in you I am well pleased. God names and claims us and calls us beloved. May we know ourselves to be beloved, accepted and blessed, gracious Sat., Jan. 7: 1 Jn 3:11-21; Jn 1:43-51 Woman, how does your concern affect me? My hour has not yet come. The mom in me cringes when I hear Jesus speak to his mother this way. We usually think of Mary as passive and obedient, but in this situation she is anything but passive. She is a good Jewish mother (a good mother, period!) who knows her son s potential, challenges him to act and she won t take no for an answer. Without further consulting Jesus, she walks over to a group of servants and says, You go to him, and do what he says. Whatever he tells you to do, you do it. Remember, she is a guest at this wedding, so she is giving orders to someone else s servants! Thanks to Mary s bold confidence, Jesus acknowledges his role and begins his ministry with this first miracle. For confidence even when we are reluctant, we pray. 6 Centennial Year! The School of St. Mary is happy to announce the kick-off of our 100th Birthday in The original threestory school building (185 E. Illinois Road) opened on September 8, 1917, and contained five classrooms, two music rooms, a playroom and an assembly hall. The third floor of the school building held a residence for the five Sisters of Mercy who were commissioned to teach at the new school. As the school prospered and enrollment increased, the school underwent two major expansions: the South Wing addition in 1957 and a new Primary Grade Center in Today the School of St. Mary is a vibrant Catholic school community serving well over 500 students. Stay tuned throughout the year for updates on the many exciting centennial plans and fun facts about our history! She listened to God and said yes to His invitation to be the Holy Mother of His son. She also trusted in God s providence on a daily basis. As we start a new year, take time every day to listen to how God is calling you; trust that He has a better plan for you than you could ever imagine.
