3 FROM THE DESK OF FR. MIKE Lent is a wonderful prayerful season with rich devotions, traditions and opportunities to come together in prayer. May the Holy Spirit lead us and guide us and all believers throughout this holy season. One such tradition of our Church is a Lenten Mission. Today we are welcoming Fr. Ron Hicks to our parish for our Lenten Mission. The theme of the Lenten Mission is With God All Things are Possible: Getting back on track this Lent In addition to preaching at all of the weekend Masses, Fr. Hicks will lead us in prayer Sunday evening and Monday evening with a presentation beginning at 7:30 PM. I will celebrate Mass Tuesday evening at 7:30 PM to conclude the Lenten Parish Mission. You are invited to come to one or all three nights of the Mission. Invite family, friends and neighbors to come pray with you this Lent. I pray you will grow in your faith through the invitations offered by Fr. Hicks to the parishioners of St. Mary s! As we pray together this Sunday of Lent, where are you seeking the Lord in your life? Are you dedicated to seeking God in all things? When we seek God in all things, we are looking, gazing and analyzing life beyond the surface, beyond first appearances, beyond what may be visible only to the eye, not the heart. As you enter or leave church, you can pick up a Lenten prayer, a Lent key tag. Perhaps the picture of Jesus on the cross will bless and inspire you this Lent. Perhaps the phrase Seek God in all things will help your prayerful focus this Lent. Perhaps the scripture quote of Isaiah 55 verse 6 we pray Seek the LORD while he may be found, call upon him while he is near will renew your spirit this Lent. This weekend our second collection is to support our sharing parish Most Blessed Trinity in Waukegan. In addition to financial support, many parishioners donate their time at many of the programs offered at Most Blessed Trinity. Parishioners, Tom and Helen Kerf received the Good Samaritan Award from Most Blessed Trinity Parish Food Pantry on February 25 th at the Good Samaritan Fiesta supporting the Community Social Services of the parish. The event was held at the Milan Banquet Hall in Waukegan, Illinois. Tom and Helen were honored for their years of service to the Food Pantry. Fr. Jacque Beltran presented the award to Tom and Helen. Congratulations to Helen and Tom. If you would like more information regarding how you can give of your time in ministry at Most Blessed Trinity, please let me know. Your support and prayers for our Youth Group Kairos Retreat are very much appreciated. They will be on the Kairos Retreat which began on Thursday evening and concludes on Sunday afternoon. This powerful retreat has been offered to our teens for many years. Actually, there are more applications for the retreat than the retreat house can accommodate. May the teens grow in an appreciation for their faith in God and the love of family and friends on this Kairos retreat experience. God bless Terese Halm, our Youth Minister, and the adult and student team leading our teens in prayer and retreat. You are invited to pray the Renew My Church prayer during the season of Lent. Copies of the prayer are available at the entrances to church. God bless as you seek God in all things this Lent.

4 Cardinal Cupich's message for Lent ~ Give Yourself A Gift This Lent, Silence The noise pollution of modern society grows harsher every year. We are bombarded by noise from traffic, aircraft, office equipment, home appliances, TVs and cell-phone conversations. Oddly enough, we rarely seem to notice the increased noise because we have learned to live with it or just block it out. However, we pay a price for all of the increasing decibels in the modern age. In addition to the immediate danger of hearing loss due to long-term exposure to high levels of noise, we also suffer from an increase of stress and irritability from this overstimulation. Lent is the season of silence. It is a time to enter into the desert, as Jesus did for 40 days. Admittedly, silence can make us feel uneasy. Perhaps it is because silence forces us to think, to feel, to be in touch with those deep areas of our lives where a sense of emptiness or meaninglessness may be lurking in our hearts. Throughout the Gospels Jesus is portrayed as going off alone in silence to pray. The evangelists repeatedly recorded such retreats from the noise of the world not just to tell us something about Jesus, but also about those who followed him. They, too, discovered that silence takes us into the divine presence. Meister Eckhart, a 14th-century German Dominican, said it so well: "Nothing in all creation is so like God as silence." This Lent I have asked our pastors to invite their communities to take extra time for silence during Mass, especially after Communion. In fact, the church recognizes the value of silence at certain moments of the Mass as a way of quietly absorbing the great mysteries we celebrate. Taking time for silence after Communion can be a special grace for each of us individually and for us as a worshipping community. We actively pray to God for our needs and raise our voices in songs of prayer. Yet, we need this silent time to allow God to speak to us. That means quieting ourselves even from saying prayers and just being aware of what Jesus tells us: we abide in God and God in us. I especially invite you to enter into silence during these 40 days, not as a place of fear, but as the place where you encounter the living God who wants to speak to you. Give yourself the gift of silence this Lent. You will discover what Eckhart did centuries ago: "Nothing in all of creation is so like God as silence." Church of St. Mary Lenten Mission With God All Things are Possible: Getting back on track this Lent Fr. Ron Hicks will lead us in prayer during Masses this weekend, and speak on Sunday evening March 12 and Monday evening March 13 at 7:30pm in church. Fr. Mike Nacius will celebrate Mass Tuesday evening, March 14 at 7:30pm to conclude the Mission. Through solid, Catholic theology and engaging stories, Fr. Hicks will stress the absolute need and importance of having faith and hope, and suggest specific ways of keeping God in the center of our lives. Special Screening of the movie Apparition Hill, a Pilgrimage of Faith Come join us to view a special screening of Apparition Hill at Gorton Theatre on March 19 at 3:00pm! The move details the emotional journey of seven pilgrims to Medjugorje and the impact on their lives. Reverend Michael Grzesik will present the film with a short introduction of his own conversion experience and vocation to the priesthood after making a pilgrimage to Medjugorje. Come join us on a pilgrimage of faith! Tickets $15.00 online: or call ticket info.

6 Lenten Spiritual Offering Strengthen and enhance your Lenten journey by listening to any of the Lighthouse CDs located in the kiosk in the main vestibule of the church. There are many selections to choose from by various renown Catholic speakers. Getting to know your faith and sharing with others is our mission. So, please visit the kiosk, pick something up and share with your friends! ($3.00 suggested donation per CD). Well-known Catholic theologian Dr. Scott Hahn explains Christ's Paschal Sacrifice on the cross as the fulfillment of the traditional fourth cup used in the celebration of the Jewish Passover meal. He draws a symbolic parallel to the Last Supper and Christ's death on Calvary. Through his scholarly insights and important biblical connections, Mass will come alive for you as never before! Soup Kitchen, Friday, March 17 On the third Friday of each month, St. Mary s helps provide food and staff for the Most Blessed Trinity soup kitchen in Waukegan. Our facility, at 914 8th Street in Waukegan, opens about 4:00pm and we generally finish our work around 7:15pm. Volunteers come and go at whatever times their circumstances require. Dinner is served from 5:30pm until 6:30pm. Before dinner, tables are set up, casseroles warmed, salads and other dishes prepared. Afterwards the facility is cleaned up and equipment put away. Foods needed: meats, potatoes, pastas, vegetables, fruits, salads & casseroles. Please leave contributions at the Parish Office (201 E. Illinois Road) until 3:00pm Friday. 7 Mon., Mar. 13 Dn 9:4b-10; Lk 6:36-38 Stop condemning and you will not be condemned. When our faults (real or perceived) have been thrown back at us in the midst of a heated exchange, few have the grace to receive the unsolicited feedback with calm objectivity. More often, our own ire is ignited and our minds reach for faults that we can then throw back at our accusers. Anger usually begets anger, just as condemnation usually leads us to condemn in retaliation. It is, unfortunately, part of our human instinct to protect ourselves. Jesus reminds us that the human reaction of mirroring what is presented to us, is also true for more positive interactions. When we speak with attitudes of forgiveness, nonjudgement and generosity, we are more likely to promote a similar response. Your words, Lord, are [and promote] spirit and life Tues., Mar. 14 Is 1:10, 16-20; Mt 23:1-12 The scribes and Pharisees works are performed to be seen. Our daughter, needing a change from her studies, decided to volunteer at a nearby soup kitchen. She d envisioned herself preparing food or serving meals for grateful clients. When she arrived and offered her help, a frazzled cook/ manager growled, Those pots need cleaning! Afraid to ask more questions, she tried to comply. After the two-hour long pot cleaning, her hands were raw, her clothes ruined, she angrily vowed to quit. Later, she asked herself, Was I doing it for me or do I actually want to be of help? Armed with an apron and rubber gloves, she returned to the kitchen as a grateful cook every Wednesday afternoon for two years. Thank you, Lord, for those who do the work of the kingdom unnoticed except by you. Wed., Mar. 15 Jer 18:18-20; Mt 20:17-28 Hear me, O Lord, and listen to what my adversaries say. To stay updated in Readings for the Second Week of Lent his profession, my husband periodically attends conferences. These events usually include a formal dinner to which spouses are also invited. The question most often asked as an icebreaker among strangers is, What do you do? Being asked this question makes me a bit anxious in such secular crowds. Although I am proud of my work within the church, I also know that working in religion (any religion) can evoke misconceptions and stereotypical images with which I do not identify. Defending my beliefs and life choices often demands a delicate balance between diplomacy and my baptismal call to evangelize by example. Give us the words and courage we need to reflect the body of Christ within the secular world. Thurs., Mar. 16 Jer 17:5-10; Lk 16:19-31 My child, remember that you received what was good during your lifetime. When a friend lost her 21-year-old son in a car accident, she agonized over all the things she d never told him, especially of how proud she was of him. We seem to have little difficulty in voicing criticisms, yet we hesitate to tell people with the same fervor: Thank you! I m sorry! I forgive you! I love you! Like the rich man condemned to the nether world, regret and guilt can create a torment not easily assuaged. Life is too short and unpredictable to take the appreciation and responsibility of God s many gifts for granted, or to postpone our expressions of gratitude. Lord, help us to see each day as an opportunity to live gratefully and generously. Fri., Mar. 17 Gn 37:3-4, 12-13a, 17b-28a; Mt 21:33-43, They sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver. Consider Reuben. Like his brothers, he was jealous of Jacob s preferential treatment of Joseph, but perhaps because he was the eldest, he also felt the responsibility of doing the right thing. While he used his influence to prevent Joseph s murder, his intention to return Joseph to his father failed. When his brothers sold Joseph into slavery, Reuben was distraught, but did nothing to bring about justice. There are still Reubens in our world (myself included) who see injustices being committed, but through lack of courage or energy make only a half-hearted attempt to speak out against popular sentiment. Give us the courage, Lord, to join our voices to those who speak out against injustice. Sat., Mar. 18 Mi 7:14-15, 18-20; Lk 15:1-3, Not once did I disobey your orders. The wisdom of the prodigal son parable never grows old. I have been the prodigal son, hurting my parents through selfish and thoughtless actions. I have been the father who waited and prayed for a prodigal child to return home. Most often, however, I have been the eldest son who did all the right things for reasons other than love or gratitude, and condemned those who lost their way with a sense of self-righteous smugness. Discipleship is about more than following the letter of the law. It calls us to act with a sense of love and mercy while doing the right thing and leaving little room for ego. Forgive us, Lord, when we choose not to see others through the eyes of our merciful Father. 8 Crusader Comedy Club The Crusader Comedy Club lived up to its name and provided an excellent venue for community building and fundraising. Thank you to Kathy Burden and Chrissy Davis for planning such a festive evening. Thank you to everyone who attended and supported our Annual Fund! Thank you for your generosity! Thank you to the following businesses (and those who wish to remain anonymous) who have stepped up to support the School of St. Mary s Annual Fund this year. We are so grateful to these community-minded organizations and encourage our School of St. Mary families to be patrons whenever possible. School of St. Mary Burning of the Palms The School of St Mary students participated in Ash burning on February 28. This is a Catholic tradition that helps prepare us for the start of Lent. Typically a parish community will have a solemn procession where people carefully burn the old palms because they are sacramental and once the ashes are burnt they are used for Ash Wednesday services. Father Brendan Guilfoil led the Palm Burning Prayer Service with readings done by eighth grade students from the Class of 2017.

9 Church of St. Mary Religious Education Program On the day before Ash Wednesday, Father Brendan Guilfoil presided over the Palm Burning Prayer Service with 5th graders participating. Students in grades 2, 3, 4 and 6 observed from the school hallway. Palms from Palm Sunday last year were burned to provide the ashes used for Ash Wednesday services. Students learned that the Alleluia is not used during Lent and symbolized this by singing it one inal time and then placing an Alleluia banner in a closed box. The prayer service reminded students Lent is a season of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving as we prepare ourselves for Christ s Passion, Death and Resurrection.
