Pastor s Notes THANK YOU This weekend I will be preaching at each Mass in order to express my thanks to all of you and say farewell. I am grateful to God for the blessings of these years at St. Mary.

3 Pastor s Notes THANK YOU This weekend I will be preaching at each Mass in order to express my thanks to all of you and say farewell. I am grateful to God for the blessings of these years at St. Mary. I am very grateful to my late parents Joseph and Eleanor McGovern, along with my siblings, for their love and support throughout my life. I have been a priest for twenty-two years, fourteen of which have been at St. Mary; first as an Associate Pastor and then as the Pastor since December, It is difficult to express the depth of my appreciation for the priests, deacons and staff I have served with here. I am most especially grateful to all the people of the parish for sharing their lives and faith with me. God is the Author of each of our lives; I thank God for the lines he has written during this time. As one chapter in the life of St. Mary concludes, may the new chapter be filled with the Lord's presence, peace and blessings. (I will be moving to St. Raphael on June 27, so I will still be here at St. Mary for a few weeks. My future contact information is at the end of the column.) SOME THOUGHTS ABOUT THE PRESENT There have been a number of changes in our community since In some cases the changes involved buildings, such as the construction of our Upper Grade Learning Center or the demolition of Barat College. As a pastor, I am most interested in people and their families. One change that I think requires further reflection is the decline in the number of infants being baptized at St. Mary. Before the economic crisis of 2008, about babies were baptized here annually. Since 2008, that number has dropped to infant baptisms per year. Why such a drop? One factor, I think, is that the economy prohibited some young families from selling their homes in the city and moving up here. I hope that as the economy improves, more young families will find a home in St. Mary's. In the meantime, I suggest that the parish staff and leadership further explore how the present demographics can influence our parish ministries and services. This will help our parish serve the needs of the many people who make St. Mary their spiritual home. FUTURE REQUESTS Several people have asked me if I will be able to return to St. Mary in the future for weddings, baptisms, etc. If you wish to invite me to preside at a wedding or baptism, please contact me through St. Raphael. If you would like me to preside at a funeral, it may be best to ask the Bereavement Minister assisting with planning a funeral to contact me. I will be the only priest on staff at my new parish, however, if my schedule permits I will do my best to accommodate requests. I have spoken to Father Mike Nacius about this; he certainly understands that such requests will happen and is supportive of me assisting a family as I am able. Girl Scout Lighten Up & Lighten the Load Girl Scout Troup #41017 Lighten Up & Lighten the Load Rummage Sale & Recycle Day June 18th 9:00am-3:00pm in School of St. Mary UGC Gym This is the perfect time for you and the kids to lighten up and go through your closets, drawers, basements, and attics and get rid of the things you don t want or use anymore. Don t let the excess stuff weigh you down! Bring in all clothes, shoes, furniture, sports gear, jewelry anything!! We are also helping the City of Lake Forest roll out their new Textile Recycling project, by having bins for unwanted sheets, towels, curtains, underwear, socks, shoes, etc. Think of how much space these items take up in a landfill! Join us in lightening the load by bringing in those items instead of throwing them away. Drop Off Days for both events are Monday, June 13 to Thursday June 16 from 3pm to 6pm; and Friday, June 17 from 9am to 3pm at the UGC Gym. Any child coming in with a bag of items will receive $5 in Rummage Bucks to use on ONE item at the sale on Saturday!

7 Let off some S.T.E.A.M. this summer at Crusader Camp! The School of St. Mary will again offer summer camp programs for three to six year old children from June 13 to July 8! This award-winning camp is led by experienced, certified teachers that provide creative opportunities to enjoy weekly themes and has been recognized in Forest and Bluff magazine as the Best of the Best Kids Day Camp Crusader Camp s exciting programs include: Under the Big Top June Going for the Gold! June Wild, Wild West June 27-July 1 and Hard Hat Challenge July 5-8 Hands-on activities, including games, songs, stories, and crafts bring these themes to life and ignite imaginations. S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) enrichment opportunities will be integrated into each theme. The camp will be located at the Primary Grade Center Monday through Friday with two, three, and five day options from 8:30am to 11:30am. There will also be a Lunch Bunch option offered from 11:30am to 12:30pm. This option gives campers an extra hour to eat lunch with their friends and extends playtime.
