3 Dear friends, I m fond of saying, Every day is a good day at St. Mark! And it is true! But I have to admit that Saturday mornings during the fall are among my most favorite days at St. Mark. If you have not been on the campus on a Saturday morning at this time of year, you don t know what you are missing! Flag football brings dozens of little tykes to St. Mark with their parents, grandparents and siblings. There is a carnival atmosphere as football games are being played everywhere. There is a wonderful spirit as everyone cheers the kids on. Thank you to SMAC (Saint Mark Athletic Committee) and to all of our parishioners who make this opportunity available to so many people from our community and who care for the details of hospitality. Last weekend it was announced that a new group will be forming in the parish to help meet the needs of our young adults and their friends in their 20 s and 30 s. This is an age group that can sometimes feel neglected in a parish and so we are grateful to our youth minister, Julie Albertson, for responding to this very real need. Young adults who are interested in being a part of this group are invited to attend the first meeting on Monday, October 6, at 7:00 p.m. in the Courtesy Room of the church. The group will help foster the Christian formation of its members as well as provide social and service opportunities. May God bless this important initiative of our parish. This weekend I am serving as spiritual director for a Men s Cursillo Weekend at St. Bernadette Parish. Cursillo, like Christ Renews His Parish (CHRP), is a renewal movement in the Church that has helped many people come alive in their faith. Weekends are held in the fall and spring of the year for both men and women. If you would like to know more about Cursillo, I ll be happy to share information and sponsor any parishioner who would like to participate in a Cursillo weekend. Fr. Eric Augenstein, our Archdiocesan Vocation Director, will be celebrating the Masses this weekend and speaking on vocations and how we as a parish can create a culture that fosters vocations. Recently our Vocations Committee has been re-activated under the leadership of Art Berkemeier. Parishioners who would like to be a part of the Vocations Committee are encouraged to contact Art or the Parish Center. I know that Fr. Eric will find a warm welcome among us. He was baptized here at St. Mark and so he is coming home this weekend. We ask God to abundantly bless Father s great work for the Church. See you at Mass! Message from Ft. Todd Question of Week Q. This week we are half way through our list of The Ten Most Common Misconceptions about the Catholic Church. This week s misconception: The Catholic Church is opposed to science and the theory of evolution. A. Both science and religion have the same goal: to know the truth. Many, especially, since the dawn of the scientific age, have seen religious faith and science as opposed to one another. The Polish monk and astronomer, Nicholas Copernicus, who lived , is attributed with beginning the scientific revolution that paved the way for the Age of Reason and the end of the medieval world view. New discoveries about the natural world brought with them a new understanding of man and his place in the universe. There have been bumps in the road, especially early on as evidenced by the case of Galileo, but the Church has been a strong patron of science and many of the most celebrated scientists, past and present, have been men and women of faith. In the face of new discoveries about the universe two perennial and distinct questions are asked: Who is responsible for creation and how did it come about? Many people see the stories of creation found in the Book of Genesis in the bible as proof of the incompatibility of religion and science. For some it all comes down to creationism or evolution. Either the world came about in the six days of creation or evolved over the course of millions of years. The Catholic Church s exegesis of the Genesis passages makes it clear that the two stories of creation found in the first book of the bible are not meant to be a scientific explanation of the origins of the world and the human race. The question being explored in those stories is the who of creation not the how. The truth revealed in the bible is that God is the author of creation. God is responsible for the created world. God willed the world. How God created the world is open to scientific inquiry and speculation. The theory of evolution is, in the view of the Church, a plausible theory. Few people know that Georges Lamaitre, the Belgian physicist who introduced the Big Bang Theory of the origin of the universe, was also a Catholic priest. The Church has been and remains a patron of scientific investigation. The truths revealed by science help us appreciate and stand in awe of the beauty, the goodness, the order and the perfection of the One behind these truths.
