3 Dear friends, Thank you to all of our parishioners who brought their United Catholic Appeal pledge cards to Mass this weekend for Intention Sunday. The United Catholic Appeal supports the work and ministry of the Archdiocese. We all benefit from these ministries. I was amazed to read in a letter from Archbishop Tobin that only two in ten Catholic households participate in the annual appeal. That means that twenty percent of Catholics carry the load that rightly belongs to all of us. The success of the appeal can be judged not only in the amount of money raised for Archdiocesan ministries, but also by the number of parishioners who participate in the appeal. Let us pray that we will be successful at St. Mark in contributing as much as we can to the appeal and reaching our parish goal, but also that we will have great participation. Those who forgot their pledge cards this weekend may bring them to the Parish Center or bring them to Mass next weekend. We belong to a strong Archdiocesan Church that reaches out to people throughout central and southern Indiana and we are grateful to be a part of these ministries. Last Monday evening I had the privilege of joining our Young Adult Group for a Holy Hour in front of the Blessed Sacrament. It was a beautiful experience to watch young men and women gaining strength for their lives in an hour of quiet prayer in our parish church. The group meets every Monday at 6:30 p.m. in the Cenacle for supper followed by prayer and reflection. Being part of the Holy Hour last Monday with young adults from several parishes I couldn t help but thank God for blessing this new ministry of our parish that began just a little over a year ago. As we announced at the Masses last weekend, we will retire the old Gather books after almost twenty years of service to the parish. The books contain the songs we use to sing God s praises at Mass and all of our liturgies. On the First Sunday of Advent the new Gather books will be in our pews. Parishioners who would like to help offset the cost of the books are invited to gift the parish with a book in memory of a deceased loved one, in honor of a living person or as a gift from one s own family. The inside cover of each book will have the name of the person or family in whose memory or honor the book has been purchased. Forms are available in the bulletin this week and at the Mary Lynn Cavanaugh Welcome Desk. May the new Gather books help us to continue to sing God s praises for many years to come at St. Mark! See you at Mass! News from Father Todd Question of the Week Q. What exactly happened at the meeting of bishops in Rome? Did the Church change some teachings? A. Lots of people are asking that question! Shortly after assuming office, Pope Francis spoke of his concern for families in the modern world. He called for a Synod of Bishops to discuss the pastoral challenges facing families in light of the New Evangelization. This synod will take place in In preparation for this important meeting, the pope called for an extraordinary synod to prepare for the upcoming meeting of bishops. This is the meeting that took place October 5-19 in Rome that received a lot of attention form the secular press. 253 bishops and several auditors came together to prepare a working document that will form the basis for the discussions at the 2015 synod. In an unprecedented move, Pope Francis asked the bishops of the world to consult the people of their dioceses on the issues facing family life today. You might remember that Archbishop Tobin invited us to respond to several questions to help him prepare his response to this consultation. Pope Francis wanted the extraordinary synod to have the freedom to discuss any and all issues. As you might imagine, there was a lot of discussion! Two areas that were discussed received a lot of attention, if not the exclusive attention, of the secular press: homosexual unions and divorce and remarriage. These are certainly issues that face our families today and they were openly discussed at the extraordinary synod. They were not, however, the only things discussed at the meeting. The final document which was just released on October 31 will form the basis of the Ordinary Synod of Bishops in This document reaffirms the Church s teaching that homosexual unions cannot be considered analogous to God s plan for marriage and family. It also reaffirms that persons with same sex attractions are to be welcomed and treated with respect. The document also reaffirmed the permanence of marriage and the sensitive pastoral care that the Church must offer to Catholics who are divorced and remarried. As I read the final document of the extraordinary synod the most important point that I find in it is the challenge that families face today in sharing the treasure of our Catholic faith with children and youth. The indispensable role that parents have in teaching and modeling the faith is highlighted in the document. Certainly this is one of the greatest challenges the Church and families face today. If our children don t know their faith, they cannot appreciate or live their faith. Talk about pastoral challenges! May the discussion on this challenge begin in our families and our parish as we look forward to the 2015 Ordinary Synod on the Family.

Substance Addiction Ministry ("SAM") THE CHURCH S RESPONSE TO PEOPLE TOUCHED BY ADDICTION People afflicted with or affected by addiction are suffering with a spiritual malady. Addiction dis-connects people: from self, loved ones, and God. Substance Abuse Ministry s (SAM) mission is to help these people re-connect: with self, loved ones, and God. For every one who is afflicted with an addiction, a minimum of four other people will be affected. SAM is a quality of life ministry. And yet, many deny the presence of the problem or the magnitude of addiction s effects. The creation of the first SAM was a direct response to the 1992 pastoral letter of the American bishops entitled Communities of Hope: Parishes and Substance Abuse. Over the years it has become even more apparent that church can play an important role as healer. Clergy and laity alike, especially those who have been given the gift of recovery, have been called to share their experience, strength, hope, and weakness with others. SAM could not have begun nor continued to exist without the ongoing support and encouragement of the Bishops, clergy, religious, and laity The Office of Pro-Life and Family Life will be sponsoring training for SAM Ministry provided by The NCCA. When: November 15, 2014 Where: St. Matthew Catholic Church 4100 E. 56 th Street, Indianapolis, In Time: 9am-3pm Lunch included The training team will be led by Mary Martin, Director of NCCA. This training is required to fully participate in SAM Ministry. For more information and registration contact: Joni LeBeau at jlebeau@archindy.org or telephone
