Visit the parish web site for information about parish events Dear friends, Last week our Parish Liturgy Committee met. The committee meets every month to discuss the liturgical life of the parish. Liturgy is a primary reason for which a parish exists. The Greek word from which we get the word liturgy literally translates the work of the people. Liturgy is the work of the people of God. The Second Vatican Council taught that liturgy has a three-fold purpose: the sanctification of people, the building up of the Body of Christ and the worship of God. Every time we gather at St. Mark to celebrate the Eucharist or any of the sacraments we are engaged in this work. The Liturgy Committee has been entrusted with the goal established by our Pastoral Council following last year s strategic planning sessions. The goal reads: To keep liturgy vibrant and grounded in Church teaching through celebration, education and proclamation. The committee is asked by the Pastoral Council to find concrete ways to implement this goal during the coming three years. At last week s meeting we spent some time discussing what vibrant liturgy looks like so that we can nourish and foster those good things which already exist at St. Mark. These were some of the signs of vibrant liturgy that were shared: Vibrant liturgy begins with a spirit of genuine hospitality there is joy in coming together and everyone senses that joy and feels welcome to be a part of the community whether they are from St. Mark, from neighboring parishes or visitors to the parish. Vibrant liturgy includes music that lifts hearts and minds to God in song and reinforces the message of the scriptures and the prayers of the day. Vibrant liturgy is experienced when preaching creates a link between liturgy and life. Vibrant liturgy requires lectors, ministers of hospitality, extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion and cantors who are comfortable in their roles and exercise them with confidence. Vibrant liturgy is experienced when each person in the assembly knows that he or she is part of this important work and actively engages in this work of the people of God. Parishioners who would like to share other ideas of what vibrant liturgy looks like to them and offer thoughts and suggestions to the Liturgy Committee are always welcome to do so. We are called to do this holy work together and together we will strive to meet the goal of celebrating vibrant liturgies at St. Mark that sanctify the People of God, build up the Body of Christ and offer fitting worship to God. See you at Mass!

3 Q. I am a convert to Catholicism and I love being Catholic. But, as a convert, I sometimes struggle with the Sacrament of Reconciliation especially when my family and friends ask me why we confess our sins to a priest instead of going directly to God. I m never sure what to say. A. Great question! Reconciliation is one of the sacraments of our Church. The sacraments are ways in which the Risen Lord continues to meet His people. God works through visible, tangible signs to communicate His love to us. Through the power of the Holy Spirit these visible signs become efficacious actually bringing about what they signify. Human beings are not pure spirits we are embodied or incarnated spirits. We experience the world around us in a very physical way. Roses and Valentine Day cards help us communicate love. A handshake or a pat on the back expresses friendship. God, who made us, knows that this is the way we experience reality. For this very reason Jesus, became man and made His home among us. The person of Jesus Christ communicates the healing, forgiving, merciful love of God to us in a way that we as human being can understand. Jesus is the sacrament of the Father. In turn, the Church is the sacrament of Jesus. Jesus mediates His love and forgiveness to us through the Church using visible signs that we can see, feel, touch and smell. Part of this mediation is using people to communicate the love that is offered to us in the sacraments. A person is needed to pour the water over our head and say the words, I baptize you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. A priest stands in the place of Jesus and prays the words that Jesus spoke at the Last Supper over bread and wine at Mass and they become the Body and Blood of Christ. I don t think that many people baptize themselves. I don t know of anyone who sits at their kitchen table on Sunday morning and does the Eucharist alone. It is logical that God would also communicate his forgiveness in a way that we as human beings can understand through the words spoken by a person in a sacramental encounter in which Jesus continues to be present to us. It is God who is working in all of the sacraments, but working through the mediation of His Church. There are few more beautiful words than those we hear spoken to us by Jesus through the priest in the Sacrament of Reconciliation: Your sins are forgiven, go in peace! Why do we confess our sins to a priest? God knows that we as human beings need to hear those words. Just as he offers us new life in baptism and feeds us with his body and blood in the Eucharist through the mediation of his Church, so, too, he offers us the gift of forgiveness through this same mediation. 5 INCLUSION INSIGHT Trouble Storing Information Learning disabilities are disorders that cause the brain to handle information in a way that interferes with learning. Problems may occur in storing information. For example, a child may have trouble remembering the order of sounds or how sounds match with letters. 7 Spotlight on Stewardship: "Advancing the Mission" Do You Like What You Do? It was a hectic day at work and I admit that I began the night a bit frazzled, but how quickly God turned it all around! First, a homeless man came up to me and asked me if I liked what I do. Before I could answer, another asked me if he could help me hand out food. He must have seen that I was frazzled and needed help. We worked well together as he poured soup and called each person by name as they received their food. He was kind and generous and thoughtful as he reminded his friends that they needed soup for their health and that they needed to stay in line and not press over us. Somehow this put me at ease and I was able to notice things I hadn t noticed before. People living on the street look much older than they really are. It s hard to know their true ages. I am drawn to the old and the young and tonight I had both cling to my side. An older man stayed close to me as we passed out the food. He couldn t get enough to eat and he stayed by me in the hope that I would give him more food. His fingernails were longer than those of any woman I know and I wanted to sit with him and cut his nails and comb his hair. He was very old and worn, but he smiled all the time. I think he could sense how difficult it was for me to see him in that condition and he tried to make it easier for me. I loved his kind spirit. A young man clung to my other side. He stayed close hoping to get some more lemonade or punch. The homeless get water, but sweet water is a treat. His smile was equally captivating and I could not resist. I also had two women that I was able to clothe from head to toe. These clothes make it possible for them to begin looking for jobs. They were so happy to get pretty things and I thank the ladies of St Mark who donated the clothes and made a miracle come true for them. Tonight we were busier than usual and ran out of food. But there was love and laughter and kindness. The night began with an unexpected question from a homeless man, Do you like what you do? I stopped for a minute and knew the answer to the man s question. I love what I do! I love that a simple sandwich, cup of soup and sweet glass of lemonade can make an old man and a young man smile and praise the Lord. I love that a homeless man was kind enough to want to help me and to serve his fellow man, looking out for his brothers and sisters and their needs. I love the blessings I get from the hungry and lonely and just worn out children of God looking for a kind hand. I love the kind and loving hands of our St. Mark parishioners that reach out to our homeless brothers and sisters. Do I like what I do? I LOVE what I do! A St. Mark HOOP volunteer
