3 A note From Archbishop Tobin Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I am grateful for your dedicated commitment that helped us exceed the archdiocesan goal of $5.7 million for the United Catholic Appeal. It was a group effort to raise these funds and I am grateful for your support. I am happy to report that more than 19,000 households contributed $6.2 million for ministry needs. I want to thank the parishioners of St. Mark Parish on achieving 132% of goal and for your faithful support of our parishes, schools, seminarians and deacons, retired priests, and Catholic Charities agencies throughout central and southern Indiana. Question of the Week Q. I don t understand all of the commotion about the Religious Freedom Law. Is it a good law or not? A. The law attracted national attention to Indiana and few of us recognize ourselves in the characterization that many newscasters and pundits made of Hoosiers and our state. Media and powerful groups of lobbyists were able to make it a cause celebre for supporters of same-sex marriage. The law was presented by these groups as a law legalizing discrimination against homosexuals and lesbians. Hollywood celebrities said that they would never step foot in Indiana and certain corporations threatened to leave the state. In all of the commotion few people actually read the law and those who read it weren t sure what it would mean. The bishops of Indiana wrote a statement that expresses the Catholic Church s position. The bishops assert that both discrimination against any group of citizens and denying the legal protection of an individual s religious convictions are wrong. Here is the statement from our bishops issued on April 1, The United Catholic Appeal gives us the opportunity to express our compassion for others and contribute to the critical ministry needs of the local Church. Because you have happily and unselfishly made gifts to this year s Appeal, you have given much hope to others and displayed Christ s presence in our community of faith. For that I am eternally grateful. May God continue to bless the people of St. Mark for your generous gifts. Sincerely, yours in Christ, Most Reverend Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R. Archbishop of Indianapolis Bishop Brute Days Young men of the parish entering 8 th grade through high school are invited to join the seminarians of Bishop Simon Brute College Seminary for Bishop Brute Days June The annual summer camp offers young men the opportunity to learn more about our Catholic faith, prayer, service and the awesome vocation to the priesthood. Registration forms are available in the Information Centers in the narthex of the church or may be obtained online at The recent passage of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act in Indiana appears to have divided the people of our state like few other issues in recent memory. We urge all people of good will to show mutual respect for one another so that the necessary dialogue and discernment can take place to ensure that no one in Indiana will face discrimination whether it is for their sexual orientation or for living their religious beliefs. The Catholic Church is convinced that every human being is created in the image of God. As such, each and every person deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. This includes the right to the basic necessities for living a good life, including adequate health care, housing, education and work. The Catholic Church teaches that the principle of religious freedom also is rooted in the dignity of the human person. Religious freedom is one of the most cherished rights in the U.S. Constitution. The rights of a person should never be used inappropriately in order to deny the rights of another. We are called to justice and mercy. We believe that it is crucial that religious freedom be protected. As Pope Francis wrote in his apostolic exhortation, The Joy of the Gospel: No one can demand that religion should be relegated to the inner sanctum of personal life, without influence on societal and national life, without concern for the soundness of civil institutions. We support efforts to uphold the God-given dignity of all the people of this state while safeguarding the rights of people of faith to practice their religion without undue burden from the government. A law that would actually legalize discrimination would be an unjust law. A law that would summarily dismiss the religious beliefs of other citizens would be an equally unjust law. The bishops wisely recognize and defend both rights. Any good law crafted by the Indiana legislature must do the same.
