3 Message from Ft. Todd Dear friends, This past week our parishioner Dave Jackson hung the plaques honoring Mary Lynn Cavanaugh and Monsignor Lawler that were part of our anniversary celebration. The plaques remind us of two very important values that we embrace as a way of life at St. Mark. Mary Lynn s plaque hangs behind the welcome desk in the narthex. In fact, that desk is now known as The Mary Lynn Cavanaugh Welcome Desk. That has such a nice ring to it because Mary Lynn epitomized the hospitality for which St. Mark is known and to which the Gospel calls us as Christians. The plaque in the narthex reminds us that we are all ministers of hospitality. We are responsible for welcoming and caring for those who join us for Mass and parish activities. Mary Lynn greeted each person who entered the church with open arms. May we now do the same so that Christian hospitality remains a hallmark of our parish community. Simply greeting those around us at Mass and introducing ourselves to those we do not know and welcoming others, especially visitors, to coffee and donuts after Mass are ways we fulfill our role as ministers of hospitality. We all know what it is like to be new and how we never forget those simple gestures that make us feel at home. May we offer those gestures as Mary Lynn would do. The plaque outside the Blessed Sacrament Chapel and the words of Monsignor Lawler remind us of the centrality of the Eucharist in our lives as Catholics. Many times we pass by the Blessed Sacrament Chapel without a thought. Monsignor Lawler s wise words will forever remind us to slow down and appreciate the gift of the Eucharist. I encourage families to make a visit to the Blessed Sacrament before or after Mass a part of the Sunday experience at St. Mark. It is a beautiful way of teaching our children the importance of the abiding presence of Jesus among us in the tabernacle. In the coming weeks parishioners will be invited to be a part of St. Mark s Nocturnal Adoration Society. On the First Friday of each month parishioners spend one hour in prayer before the tabernacle between the hours of 7:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. Please prayerfully consider joining other St. Mark parishioners in this very special way in which our parish honors the Blessed Sacrament. Question of Week Q. Did Emperor Constantine create the Catholic Church? This is one of the common misconceptions that some have about the Catholic Church. A. The Catholic Church traces its history back to Jesus and the twelve apostles. As Catholics we hold that Jesus founded the Church and that the Church he founded is the Catholic Church. Others outside the Church sometimes argue that Emperor Constantine who ruled the Roman Empire from 306 A.D. to 337 A.D. founded the Church. Through the Edict of Milan issued in 313 A.D. Constantine ended the persecution of Christians. The edict granted Christian and all others the right to practice their religion. The emperor recognized the importance of religion in the life of the empire and in an effort to strengthen the empire granted religious freedom to all. At the same time Constantine, whose mother, Helena, was a Christian, became a strong patron of Christians offering financial support, granting certain privileges to the clergy and building several basilicas or churches. The Edict of Milan marked a new era in the history of the Church. The Church moved from the catacombs into the public life of Rome. Within a few decades the Edict of Thessalonica in 380 A.D. made Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire. That Emperor Constantine, who himself was baptized at the end of his life, influenced the course of Christianity is undeniable. That he founded the Catholic Church is false. Many who hold this opinion say that the Council of Nicaea called by Constantine in 325 A.D. was the beginning of the Catholic Church. Emperor Constantine, as the emperors who followed him, saw his role as one of enforcing orthodoxy, rooting out heresy and maintaining church unity. The emperor did not, however, decide doctrine, that was the role of the bishops. At the Council of Nicaea the bishops decided against Arianism which maintained that Jesus was not God in the same sense as the Father. Jesus, according to Arius, was created in time. Emperor Constantine personally sided with the Arians, but the bishops defined the faith of the Church that we find in the Nicene Creed that Jesus existed from all eternity and is consubstantial with the Father. This is the faith, not of Constantine, but of the Apostles in the divinity of Jesus. Read the words of Monsignor Lawler on the plaque and you will know that he would be the first to say, See you at Mass! Constantine opened new doors and opportunities to Christianity, but he did not found the Church nor did he define the faith of the Church.

NOCTURNALE ADORATION As Roman Catholics, we believe in the Real Presence of our Lord Jesus Christ in the Blessed Sacrament of the Eucharist. The Council of Trent in the 16th century defined the meaning of the Eucharist, and declared that the Body and Blood, together with the Soul and Divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ, and therefore the whole Christ, is truly, really and substantially contained in the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. Eucharistic adoration is the worship and adoration of Christ present in the Eucharist. Jesus reminded us that "Behold, I will be with you always even to the end of the world," because "I have loved you with an everlasting love, and constant is My affection for you." (Mt 28:20; Jer 31:3). Every moment spent in Eucharistic adoration is precious, increasing His Divine Life in us and deepening the intimate relationship between us and our Lord, who is our strength for the journey.
