2 CONTACTS / INFO MESSAGE FROM FR. TODD St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church Parish Office Hours: Monday - Friday 9:00 AM - 6:00PM Parish Center Phone: Parish Fax Number: Pastor Ext. 106 Deacon Ext. 104 Business Manager Ext. 102 Pastoral Associate Ext. 103 Parish Staff Fr. Todd Riebe ft@stmarkindy.org Deacon Tom Horn thorn@roncalli.org (note the change) Kevin Sweeney sweeneyk@stmarkindy.org Mary Lynn Cavanaugh mlcav@stmarkindy.org Dear Friends, October 11, 2012, marks the 50 th Anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council. Pope John XXIII invited the bishops of the world to gather together to reflect on the signs of the times and to rediscover the role of the Church in the modern world bishops responded to the Pope s invitation and attended the various sessions of the Council that lasted from Thirty years later, October 11, 1992, Pope John Paul II approved the publication of The Catechism of the Catholic Church. This compendium of the Catholic faith was the first time that the Church had issued such a comprehensive catechism since The Catechism is a valuable resource for teachers of the faith and the inspiration for the U.S. bishops very readable and understandable United States Catholic Catechism for Adults. Music Director Ext. 105 Secretary Ext. 100 Andy Eagan aeagan@stmarkindy.org Chris Guedel cdguedel@stmarkindy.org To mark these two anniversaries, Pope Benedict has called for a Year of Faith to be celebrated from October 11, 2012, to November 24, During this time the Pope invites Catholics throughout the world to study and deepen our understanding of our faith and to reach out to others to share the treasure of our faith. School Principal Ext. 201 School Secretary Ext. 200 St. Mark Catholic School 541 E. Edgewood Avenue Indianapolis, IN Rusty Albertson ralbertson@stmarkindy.org Peggy Mehalik pmehalik@stmarkindy.org If you would like to become a member of St. Mark Parish, please call the parish office or stop by to register. Visit the parish web site for information about parish events Bishop Christopher Coyne has developed a plan that will help the parishes of the Archdiocese respond to Pope Benedict s request. At the heart of the plan is the invitation to all Catholics to study one of the most important documents of the Second Vatican Council. Lumen Gentium is Latin for Light of the Nations and is the title of the Council s dogmatic constitution on the Church. The document reflects on who we are as people of faith and what the role of the Church is in the world. From this study at the parish level, Bishop Christopher asks each parish to come up with ten important things that we would like everyone to know about our Catholic faith. Deanery gatherings and an Archdiocesan gathering will result in a final top ten list of things we would like everyone to know about Catholicism that will be published at the end of the Year of Faith and will be the source for the new evangelization that will follow the Year of Faith. A group of parishioners have met to begin discussing how we will celebrate the Year of Faith here at St. Mark. During this same year we will also be marking two very important local anniversaries: the 65 th anniversary of the founding of St. Mark Parish and the 20 th anniversary of the building of the new church. Let us look forward to a great Year of Faith! See you at Mass!
3 Question of the Week Q. My daughter wanted to have her infant baptized, but was refused because she is not registered in any parish. Why does a person have to be registered in a parish to celebrate a baptism? It seems like the Church is discouraging people from being Catholic. Thank you for your question and for your concern for your grandchild. My guess is that your daughter belonged to our parish when she was growing up. She was part of your household. She probably then married and moved away without ever officially registering in a new parish. She is in good company as many young Catholics don t understand that while our Church is a universal Church, our faith is lived out in a particular parish community. The pastor of the parish to which a person belongs is responsible for the pastoral care of the person. This includes the sacraments. A person from North Dakota might present himself to me at St. Mark and ask to have a child baptized here or to be married here. Only with the delegation of the person s pastor in North Dakota could I celebrate the baptism or the wedding. PARISH LIFE Baptismal Preparation sessions for parents will be Tues. Sept 25 at 7:30 pm in the parish center. Please call the parish office to register or if you need further information. Card Party will be held in the Narthex on Sept. 27 from 1-3pm. Mark your calendars and bring a friend along. Life Chain October 7 2:30-3:30 pm ONE HOUR, ONCE A YEAR Please join us for ONE HOUR of prayer and be counted as one of thousands across the nation to stand up for the unborn in prayer before our Lord. Join hundreds of other churches as they gather on Meridian Street for ONE HOUR of SILENT prayer. Each prayerful participant will hold a sign with one of the following messages: Abortion Kills Children (Do you believe this?) Abortion Hurts Women (Do you believe abortion exploits women?) Adoption - the Loving Option (Do you believe that God wants us all to be loved?) Jesus Forgives and Heals (Has your life been affected by abortion?) If you answered YES to any of these questions, join us Sun Oct 7 from 2:30-3:30pm T-shirts are available for $8-10, sweatshirts $15. In the case of baptism, the parents and godparents promise that they will raise the child in the ways of faith. Part of that promise includes that the child will have a community of faith and that the parents are a part of that community of faith participating in the life of the parish especially Sunday Mass. A pastor needs to know the family in order to be morally certain that the promises made at baptism are made in good faith. In an earlier, less mobile time, people often belonged to the same parish in the same community throughout their lives. Today that is often times not the case. People move from place to place. I know parishioners from Saint Mark who have been here all of their lives and I know parishioners who have lived throughout the country and have belonged to many different parishes. Your daughter should not despair. She should find the parish that will be her spiritual home and register as a member of the parish. It s what we do as Catholics. The parish is where we live out our faith. After registering, she should meet place. At every Mass here at St. Mark we extend the invitation to friends and visitors who worship with us to pick up a Welcome Packet that contains information on registering at St. Mark. I hope your daughter finds a great parish where she now lives and that it will be a place where her faith and the faith of your granddaughter will be nurtured. YEAR OF FAITH Pope Benedict has declared October 11, 2012 through November 24, 2013 as a Year of Faith. The basic purpose of this Year of Faith is to reinvigorate us as we live and share our Catholic faith. Our parish has several activities planned; in addition, in our Archdiocese, you are invited to make suggestions for a resource called 10 things We Want You to Know about the Catholic Faith. To prepare to make these suggestions you are invited to read, reflect on and discuss an important document known as Light of Nations (in Latin, Lumen Gentium), A Reflection and Discussion Guide for Lumen Gentium will be available soon. Meanwhile, you can find the document at, ii_vatican_council/index.htm. Watch the bulletin for more information on the Year of Faith including the date of our parish town-hall meeting to make suggestions for the 10 Things We Want You to Know about the Catholic Faith. Caregivers Support Group will meet Mon., Oct 15, from 5:30-7pm in room 2 in the School. If you have questions about Caregiving, please call Monica, at or contact Mary Lynn. Burmese Community Outreach Ministry If you are interested in joining the outreach group contact Patty or pattyscmalz@yahoo.com. Since the U.S. Government gives refugees only six months of aid, our Burmese parishioners are desperately in need of jobs. If you or someone you know may have entry level jobs available for our Burmese friends, please contact Mary Lynn in the parish office.

Father Vince, Exorcist We will have more details coming soon. If you have any questions, or if you are unable to make the introductory meeting, please contact Lindsey at , or send her an , Lindseybells26@yahoo.com. BAPTISM Please welcome into our parish community through the Sacrament of Baptism, FAITH AND FINANCE Life and Money with Phil Lenahan Today s second reading says, You ask but don not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions (James 4:3). Consider how the capital sins relate to how we think and act with money: pride, avarice, envy, wrath, lust, gluttony, and sloth. How can you make progress against the capital sins? Grow in the opposite virtues.
