3 News from Father Todd Dear friends, With the turning of still another page of the calendar the Church invites us to reflect on the last things. Death, judgment, heaven, purgatory and hell are among these last things. The starkness of this time of year in the northern hemisphere calls us to strip away all our pretenses and recognize that we will one day die. In an age that is uncomfortable with death and does everything it can to deny and avoid it, the Church invites us to keep our death always before us. We do this not in some morbid way, but knowing that the reality of death determines how we live our lives here on earth. I once knew a priest whose brother, also a priest, made his own casket and kept it in his room as he moved from rectory to rectory as a constant reminder of his mortality! This weekend we celebrate The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed commonly known as All Souls Day. As November 2 falls on a Sunday this year, the liturgy of All Souls takes the place of that of the 31 st Sunday in Ordinary Time. We lovingly remember family, friends and fellow parishioners who have died and who are undergoing a final purification in preparation for seeing God face to face. Scripture tells us that nothing unholy can see God face to face and live. The final purification that takes place at the end of our lives that frees us from any attachment to sin so that we can enjoy the beatific vision is a function of God s love and mercy. While in popular imagination purgatory takes on many forms, Scripture and the Church say very little about this purification other than its existence. Pope Benedict once suggested that this purification could possibly take place in a single instant at the moment of death. We pray for the dead as a sign of our faith in the reality of the Communion of the Saints. In our creed we profess our faith in this great communion every weekend. God s arms are very long and embrace all of us here on earth, those in purgatory and those in heaven. In this great communion of love we remain united with one another. As we pray in one of the prayers of the funeral liturgy, We believe that all the ties of love and friendship that unite us as one throughout our lives on earth do not unravel with death. We lovingly pray for one another in life and in death. A custom of the Church is to offer Masses for those who have died. At most of our parish Masses we remember by name a person who has died. It is a reminder that heaven and earth are united and at Mass, where heaven and earth are truly united, we celebrate that communion. Far from being frightened by death, a Christian looks forward to the ultimate goal of all human life which is communion with God and all his saints. As we commemorate all the faithful departed let us remember the beautiful words of Saint Paul in his first letter to the Corinthians: Eye has not seen and ear has not heard and it has not so much as entered the mind of a human being to know what God has prepared for those who love him. A life beyond all of our imagining awaits us. We pray that our family, friends and fellow parishioners who have died may enjoy that life and we pray that we, too, may one day enter the fullness of life for which we were created. Until then, see you at Mass! Question of the Week Q. I enjoyed our parish pilgrimage to St. Meinrad very much. It is a beautiful place! I am confused, however, by monks. What exactly are monks? I thought that they were priests, but the brother who gave us the tour told us he isn t a priest. They all looked like priests to me. A. All of us who were able to make the pilgrimage enjoyed a wonderful day and a wonderful experience together. It was great to see our parish seminarian, James Brockmeier, and Deacon Adam Ahern. It was also great to see the place where the vast majority of our Archdiocesan priests receive their formation for priesthood and service among us. St. Meinrad is lovingly dubbed the Holy Hill by its alumni. We were privileged to enjoy some hours together on that hill last weekend. Saint Meinrad was founded by two Benedictine monks from the Swiss Abbey of Einsiedeln in They came at the request of a priest to assist in ministering to the large German speaking population of southern Indiana and to help in the formation of priests. God certainly blessed that initiative as the monastery today is home to ninety monks who are engaged in many different ministries. Chief among these ministries is the seminary and School of Theology that prepares seminarians and lay men and women for pastoral ministry in the Church. The monastery is named after a ninth century Swiss hermit, Meinrad, who was killed by two travelers to whom he had offered hospitality. The monks of St. Meinrad belong to the great Benedictine order that follows the rule of St. Benedict that calls its members to a balance of prayer and work for the honor and glory of God. Five times each day the monks gather in the monastery church to pray together. We were fortunate to join them for vespers or evening prayer last Saturday. Within religious orders of men there are both priests and brothers. The fundamental vocation or call of a monk is to the monastic life of prayer and work in a community of fellow monks. Some of the monks within the community are called to priesthood and others are not. The monks who are priests exercise their ministry in the monastery and in the Archdiocese as they staff several parishes in southern Indiana. The brother monks exercise many different trades that are essential to the life of the monastery. Brother Maurus, who gave us the tour of the monastery, is the Guest Master who cares for the needs of all guests to the monastery. The Rule of St. Benedict calls on the monks to welcome every guest to the monastery as they would welcome Christ. We were blessed to experience that hospitality last Saturday. Speaking of the pilgrimage, if you see Chris Guedel give her a hug! Chris organized the pilgrimage and took care of the host of details that went into making it a very special day for all of us. Chris could easily be an activity director for a cruise line, but we sure are glad she is St. Mark s parish secretary and administrative assistant. Thank you, Chris!

Substance Addiction Ministry ("SAM") THE CHURCH S RESPONSE TO PEOPLE TOUCHED BY ADDICTION People afflicted with or affected by addiction are suffering with a spiritual malady. Addiction dis-connects people: from self, loved ones, and God. Substance Abuse Ministry s (SAM) mission is to help these people re-connect: with self, loved ones, and God. For every one who is afflicted with an addiction, a minimum of four other people will be affected. SAM is a quality of life ministry. And yet, many deny the presence of the problem or the magnitude of addiction s effects. The creation of the first SAM was a direct response to the 1992 pastoral letter of the American bishops entitled Communities of Hope: Parishes and Substance Abuse. Over the years it has become even more apparent that church can play an important role as healer. Clergy and laity alike, especially those who have been given the gift of recovery, have been called to share their experience, strength, hope, and weakness with others. SAM could not have begun nor continued to exist without the ongoing support and encouragement of the Bishops, clergy, religious, and laity The Office of Pro-Life and Family Life will be sponsoring training for SAM Ministry provided by The NCCA. When: November 15, 2014 Where: St. Matthew Catholic Church 4100 E. 56 th Street, Indianapolis, In Time: 9am-3pm Lunch included The training team will be led by Mary Martin, Director of NCCA. This training is required to fully participate in SAM Ministry. For more information and registration contact: Joni LeBeau at jlebeau@archindy.org or telephone
