3 Catechesis Note from Pastor Faith Wisdom Service VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL: If you have an interest in working with children ages 4-10 years, then please consider volunteering for our VBS program this year on Sunday, June 24th through Thursday, 28th from 6:00pm - 8:00pm. For more information, please contact Angi Swiezy at aswiezy@stmarkindy.org or x104. Congratulations to all our families who celebrated a graduation this month from kindergarten through college. Our School Ministry completed their school year this past week. We are blessed with great students, an incredible staff, wonderful families and dedicated administrators. Our school enrollment continues to increase. We are planning to have just under 400 students this fall when we return for another school year. Catholic Education is a gift to the students, our community, and our Catholic faith. It is a ministry of our parish that educates and socializes our students in our faith. Mark your calendar, our Friday Mass will be at 9:00 AM during the months of June and July. Starting June 1, 2018, our Parish Office Hours will be 8:30AM to 4:00PM Monday through Friday. The office will be closed for lunch between 12:00PM and 1:00PM. I am looking for adults who are interested in serving at Funeral Masses, especially during the summer months. Men and women are invited to volunteer and be trained to be Servers for our Funeral Masses. If you are interested, you can me or call me at the Parish Center. Eucharistic Adoration EUCHARISTIC ADORATION is held on the first Friday of each month. The next adoration will be Friday, June 1st, beginning at 7:00 PM until 12:00 AM. You are invited to any hour on the hour. If you have any questions, please call the Parish Center. Prayer and meditation before our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament are great ways to spend some special time with Him. You can ask Him for graces for yourself or for loved ones, reflect on His Word, or just keep Him company! And it s no bother for Jesus. In fact, He very much wants to see you! Do not forget our festival. It is happening June 15th and 16th. If you have not volunteered, please help us by signing up for a two hour slot. The more raffle tickets we sell, the more money will be raised. Fr. Bill Glory be to the Father, Who by His almighty power and love created me, making me in the image and likeness of God. Glory be to the Son, Who by His Precious Blood delivered me from hell, and opened for me the gates of heaven. Glory be to the Holy Spirit, Who has sanctified me in the sacrament of Baptism, and continues to sanctify me by the graces I receive daily from His bounty. 4 St. Vincent de Paul Parish Life Come to the Woodruff Place Flea Market June 2-3. St. Vincent de Paul s Mission 27 Resale Store will be participating with bargains galore! What is the Woodruff Place Flea Market? Every year, during the first weekend of June, the Woodruff Place Flea Market promises two days of treasure-hunting and treasure-finding, combined with food, fun, and terrific peoplewatching! The Flea Market began as a neighborhood fundraiser in 1975, and has grown from neighbors selling stuff in their yards to 80 acres and over 200 yards filled with stuff for sale. What will you find at Flea Market? Bargains! Food! Entertainment! It s an entire neighborhood filled with a huge assortment of treasures for sale. Everything from antiques to action figures to art; from file folders to furniture. It s different every year! In the heart of the neighborhood, there is food, drink, entertainment to keep people happy while they rest their feet for a moment. Wear your comfortable shoes and plan to spend the day better yet, plan to spend both days. The length and breadth of this Flea Market will amaze you. BURMESE LANGUAGE CLASS: John Lyin, St. Mark and Roncalli graduate and student at IUPUI, along with Rose Awi, Roncalli graduate and student at Marian University, will be teaching a class in the Burmese national language on Thursdays from 6:30pm to 8:00 pm in the Courtesy Room off the north end of the narthex. Join us and help bridge the gap between our cultures with a few simple phrases in a language that is (according to John) easy to learn. The church doors will open at 6:00pm and lock at 7:00pm. 5 St. Mark Festival 2018 The 2018 St. Mark Festival is just three weeks away on June 15th and June 16th. A thank you to all parishioners who have already volunteered to work one of our festival booths this year. It takes many people to ensure we have a successful and safe event. For those who still have not volunteered, there will be another sign-up session after all masses next weekend June 2nd and June 3rd. Also, next weekend, we will distribute tickets for our main and quilt raffles after all masses. The main raffle winner will receive their choice of $3000 or up to $4500 in tuition at a south deanery school. The winner of the quilt raffle will take home a lovely hand-made quilt. Finally, beginning next weekend, we will have a pre-sale of the money tickets for use during the festival. For each $20 in tickets purchased you will receive 22 one dollar tickets. We also will continue to take your donations of soft drinks, bottled water and glassware (for the coin-toss booth). These items can be dropped off in the narthex. If it is easier for you to make a cash donation, it will help defer the cost of the above items and/or kegs of beer for the beer tent. ATTENTION BUSINESS OWNERS! 7 The Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary After the Angel Gabriel announced to Mary that she would conceive and carry the Savior of the World in her womb, Mary went to visit her cousin Elizabeth. Their visit is what the Catholic Church celebrates on May 31st as the Feast of the Visitation. Here are eight facts you may not know about the Visitation to help you celebrate this feast! 1. Mary s visit was a mission of charity. Mary responded with haste to the message of the Angel Gabriel to go and visit her cousin, Elizabeth. Although Mary had just learned of her own pregnancy with the Savior of the world, she went into the hill country to assist in the pregnancy of her cousin. Most women, having just been told that they were carrying a child, would not hurry along on a long journey. But Mary did not neglect the needs of Elizabeth during her pregnancy and her visit is an example of a mission of charity. 2. Saint Bonaventure recommended the celebration of the feast in The feast of the Visitation finds its origin in the medieval Church. The Order of Friars Minor observed the feast before Saint Bonaventure recommended the celebration for the entire Church. The Franciscans responded to the saint s request and adopted it into their breviary. 3. The Church adopted the Feast of the Visitation universally during the Great Schism. On April 6, 1389, Pope Urban VI extended the celebration of the feast of the Visitation to the entire Church. It was a tumultuous time for the Church, because of the effects of the Great Schism, and Urban VI hoped that Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary would visit the Church and put an end to the turmoil. 4. The visitation cleansed Saint John the Baptist from Original Sin. The Catholic Encyclopedia says that as the presence of any sin whatever is incompatible with the indwelling of the Holy Ghost in the soul, follows that at this moment John was cleansed from the stain of original sin. Church fathers such as Pope Innocent III and Saint Augustine have commented on this belief as well. 5. The feast of the Visitation was moved on the Church s calendar in In 1969, the feast of the Visitation was moved to May 31st on the Church calendar. This places the feast between the Annunciation (celebrated on March 25th) and the birth of John the Baptist (celebrated on June 24th). The move was to harmonize the feasts better with the Gospel story (Calendarium Romanum Libreria Editrice Vaticana, 1969). 6. Two prayers find their roots in the Visitation. When Elizabeth greets Mary, she calls out to her the words that became the most well known Marian prayer the Hail Mary. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. After Elizabeth says that Mary is the mother of God, Mary responds with the words of the Magnificat, which is now an important part of evening prayer 7. Saint Elizabeth is the patron saint of expectant mothers. Elizabeth was a woman who had been called barren, yet she became the mother of Saint John the Baptist, who would proclaim the coming of Christ. Mary was a virgin who knew no man and yet was expecting the birth of the savior of the world. Both women rejoiced over the miracles of their pregnancies, and Saint Elizabeth is the patron saint of expectant mothers. 8. Mother Teresa considered Mary at the Visitation a model for all Christian life. In the mystery of the Annunciation and the Visitation, Mary is the very model of the life we should lead. First of all, she welcomed Jesus in her existence; then, she shared what she had received. Every time we receive Holy Communion, Jesus the Word becomes flesh in our life gift of God who is at one and the same time beautiful, kind, and unique. Thus, the first Eucharist was such: Mary s offering of her Son in her, in whom he had set up the first altar. Mary, the only one who could affirm with absolute confidence, this is my body, from that first moment offered her own body, her strength, all her being, to form the Body of Christ.
