3 News from Father Todd Dear friends, Question of the Week Q. Where does the custom of receiving ashes come from? Next weekend we will have the joy of welcoming Fr. Bob Robeson to St. Mark. For the past ten years Fr. Bob has served as the Rector of Bishop Simon Brute College Seminary. He is fondly remembered by many parishioners for the time that he served as a sacramental minister at St. Mark during a period of transition between pastors. Father Bob will celebrate all of the weekend Masses and will share with us the work that takes place at Bishop Simon Brute Seminary and ways that we can support this important ministry of our Archdiocese. I know that Fr. Bob will find a warm welcome! Thank you to everyone who participated in last week s amazing Christ Renews His Parish Weekend. The men of Team 18 lead the men of Team 19 in a spirited weekend where faith was shared, laughter was frequent, food was plentiful and friendships were formed. Saint Mark is a stronger parish thanks to the Holy Spirit s work among us at last weekend s CHRP. Thank you to the men and thank you to all the parishioners who were behind the scenes making it all happen! Weekends will be offered again this summer for the men and women of the parish. If you haven t yet had the opportunity to experience a weekend, please prayerfully consider being a part of an upcoming CHRP weekend. You will give yourself and the parish a gift! This Monday sixty parishioners and friends of St. Mark will leave Indianapolis for a ten day Pilgrimage to the Shrines of Italy. Please remember us in prayer as we make our journey to shrines and places that have special importance to us as Catholics. We will remember you and your intentions at all of our Masses. For those who would like to follow us, we will post messages and pictures on the St. Mark Catholic Church Facebook page. Fr. Dan Bedel and Fr. Francis Joseph will be assisting with daily Masses and Deacon Tom will be leading Communion Services while I am gone. Together with Fr. Bob, you are in very good hands! See you at Mass! A. The use of ashes to signify penance and mortality dates back to the Old Testament. Job dresses in sackcloth and ashes as a sign of repentance. The people of Nineveh responded to Jonah s call to repentance by putting on sackcloth and sitting in ashes. Jesus refers to the use of ashes as a sign of repentance when he referred to the places that he had visited that had not repented by saying, If the miracles worked in you had taken place in Tyre and Sidon, they would have reformed in sackcloth and ashes long ago (Mt 11:21). In the early Church those who were guilty of serious sin entered the Order of the Penitents and would be sprinkled with ashes as a sign of their desire to repent of their sin. In the Middle Ages those who were near death were laid upon sackcloth sprinkled with ashes. The priest would bless the dying person with holy water and say the words, Remember that thou art dust and to dust thou shalt return. The use of ashes to begin the forty days of Lent is documented in a ritual for the Day of the Ashes that dates back to the 8 th century. Around the year 1000 an Anglo Saxon priest wrote, We read in the books both of the Old Law and in the New, that men who repented of their sins bestrewed themselves with ashes. Now let us do the same at the beginning of our Lent. The ashes we use today are made from the palms of Palm Sunday. As Jesus entered Jerusalem the crowds waved palm branches and proclaimed him king. A week later the same people cried, Crucify him, crucify him! We recognize ourselves as those who have proclaimed Jesus our king and yet who have betrayed him by our sin. On Ash Wednesday as we receive the ashes on our forehead, we hear the familiar admonition, Repent and believe the Good News, or Remember that you are dust and unto dust you shall return. From Old Testament times to the present, ashes are a sign of repentance and mortality.

If you would like to volunteer, you may sign-up after mass at the welcome desk, call the parish office, or Melissa Strange at mstrange2@gmail.com. BURMESE MINISTRY Language -Most of the Burmese in our parish come from the Chin Hills in west Myanmar. There are numerous sub-groups within their population who speak 20 to 25 languages with about four types based on linguistic similarities. Locally most St. Mark Chin live in Greentree or Regency apartments but they don t always speak the same language so communication can be difficult even among themselves.
