1 The Trinitarian Trinity Heights United Methodist Church, Newton, Kansas August 2016 A LITTLE DESERT FIRST WITH THE PASTOR: So what is your favorite flavor of Ice Cream? No other desert makes my top favorite list for the summer than Ice Cream. You decide - could be a sundae or banana split, or a master blast or just a plain dish of good ole vanilla. I love sherbet, or sorbet, homemade, store-bought Brier s, or Hagan Daz, frozen custard, or frozen yogurt. I haven t met or tasted a flavor I don t like. Nothing says summer like Ice Cream or even a sno cone. It was so much fun to have the sno-cone truck come to VBS. The different flavors were amazing, and it was so much fun to sit around and eat them together. Since I am thinking about Ice Cream I want to use that imagery to write this article, and you will need to use that imagery to read my article. Each paragraph is another scoop; change the flavor, or change the topping you decide. I will try to use small scoops so you don t get too full. First scoop; is A BIG THANK YOU to STEPHANIE AND MARY AND ALL THE WORKERS. We had such a great time. I loved seeing the kids learn their bible verses and songs and they really enjoyed the games. We collected food for the Salvation Army and the kids gave several of their quarters into the Sunday offering to help pay for VBS. Needless to say we should be impressed with their generosity. Second scoop; August is the start up for Choir, youth group, youth bells, and adult bells. I can t wait for the first Sunday the choir sings. I always love their music and what their voices add to worship. It is awesome to hear the bells play. We are truly blessed with great and talented people to help us worship. Third scoop; WOW is coming we will start the ten weeks of the fall session on September 14. That will give us ten weeks for the fall and we will stop the week before Thanksgiving. Fourth Scoop: In August we, as an Annual Conference, may truly find ourselves as a Great Plains annual conference in the news. Bishop Jones has decided that we should hold a church trial to take up the case of Cynthia Meyer, a pastor of a UMC church who came out and said that she was in a covenant relationship with another woman. Charges were filed and now we will have a church trial in Concordia Kansas at the historic Grand Theater which is the Bishop s choice for a site for the trial. The date is August 24 th, one week before the bishop will leave to assume his new duties as the Bishop of the Texas Annual conference. Whipped Cream, Cherry and Nuts: It has been my honor to be able to lead us in the funeral services for several of our saints in this church. I am so thankful to God for the Laity of this church for their gifts, talents, and commitments. We have been blessed. I hope we remember their families, and loved ones who miss them, and cherish their memories. The great cloud of witnesses who watch and encircle our church continues to grow. I will be preaching in August from the book of Hebrews so my last reference will be explained as we unpack the powerful message of the writings to the Christians with Hebrew heritage. Hope you didn t get brain freeze! Christ s richest love to you: Pastor Donna

3 Phone Calling Has Started The phone calls are progressing. You may have already gotten your call; expect your call soon if you haven t received one yet. This will not be a long phone call, but it will be important. The Next Steps task force and the Evangelism committee decided we should call the church members and those who attend to find out the answer to these three questions. 1. What are we doing well? 2. What can we do better? 3. Do you know of any needs we can meet as a church? Pastor Donna has recruited people to call. If you haven t received your call yet -- there s still time to think about your answers to the questions. 4 Can you believe it s August already. The heat outside certainly verifies that. We had the first meeting of our new Board in July. We approved the Budget It will be in your new Program book that will be coming out in the middle of Aug. We will get the books to the Circle leaders and they will distribute them. E-Circle will receive yours by . In past years the churches in the area have gone together for a tea. We have decided to try that again in April A specific date will be set later. We also talked about making it easier for young mothers to attend events - like Bazaar, Circle meetings, Annual Meeting, etc - by providing a sitter for the younger children. There will be reminders and a number to call if you want us to have a sitter available. The money from our Bazaar goes to local missions. All the Pledge money from our members goes to the District for missions of the larger church. We do not have anything to finance our own expenses, like a sitter. So we decided we would do a WOW meal and use those funds for our needs. A date will be set and you will receive plenty of notice to help out. We hope to see you Sept 12 at Elizabeth Circle at 6:30pm and Martha Circle on Sept 21 at 9:30 am at the church. God Bless, Judy Rittgers, President Dillons Rewards Extends Our Community Caring Thank you! Because you shop at Dillons, and are registered online, our church benefits. 6 Greetings! I simply cannot believe that summer is over! It is incredible how time flies, and each year it seems to go even faster than the last. Our Youth Group went to KC, KS July 7-9 th for our 2016 Mission Work. We stayed at Valley View Church in Lenexa, KS. The church was big and we could easily get lost! The gym was amazing and the kids really enjoyed utilizing it while we were there. They were able to play basketball, volleyball, indoors baseball (with a whiffle ball of course), and scoot around on scooters. The kids thoroughly enjoyed the gym and I was so grateful it was there for them to get their energy out. We performed our mission work at Trinity Community Church in Wyandotte County. Mark Holland is the pastor there and his father Ron Holland is the Associate Pastor. All staff at the church works on a Part-Time basis; so our help was greatly appreciated! It was a pleasure getting to hear from Mark on how he manages to be the Pastor of Trinity and the Mayor of Wyandotte County. How does one separate church from state in that position? Well, it isn t all that easy according to him. He said that his faith plays a role in decisions that he makes in his position as Mayor. There are also times when he may seem a little to Preachy in meetings that aren t church meetings. He has quite a full load and we feel honored that he took time out of his busy schedule to meet with us. Regretfully, we did not capture a photo with him. The kids performed work cleaning tables, chairs, windows, and detail cleaned the kitchen. They did a fantastic job and worked really hard. We have an incredible group of kids that demonstrated hard work, loving interactions, and dedication to complete the task at hand. They represented THUMC well! We are entering the fall season and will be starting up our regular Youth Group Meetings. Our first one will be August 24 th at 5:30pm and will run until 7:15pm. Youth Bells will start the same evening at 7:15pm-8:00pm. I am pleased to announce that I had a couple of volunteers to help with Youth Group after our service on Sunday. I am excited about the possibilities! I did agree to let them do a trial run to see how they like it and make sure they know what they are getting into! Once there is a full commitment I will announce their names. Thank you again for all your support of our Youth. If you are interested in helping with the youth please call, text, or me. The more the merrier! Also, if there is a special skill or talent that you have and would like to arrange a time to come to a youth meeting we would definitely make time for you. I am looking forward to a fantastic year with these kiddos! Love and Blessings to you all, Christy Rossiter

7 The buckets are coming, the buckets are coming, August , and 28. After the 9:00 and 11:11 services. Please help the Trinity Heights Relay for Life team meet their goal of $5,000 by dropping your change into the buckets team members will be holding!!! Thank you from all the THUMC Relay for Life team members. Youth Handbell Choir Begins August 24 Are you going to be in the 5 th grade up through high school? Do you like music?
