1 The Trinitarian Trinity Heights United Methodist Church, Newton, Kansas February 2012 FORWARD & FUTURE FEBRUARY FORECASTINGS FOR THE FABULOUS PEOPLE OF THUMC!!! February is the Month of Love! February is the Month of Celebrating Black History! February is the Beginning of the Season of Lent, that leads us into RESURRECTION SUNDAY! THANK YOU! To the Staff, Members, and Friends of THUMC for your generosity & show of love, thru your gifts & Dillon s Dollars received for Christmas! You ARE A Blessing! AND SPEAKING OF GENEROSITY! The Members & Friends of THUMC did an INCREDIBLE JOB with their GIVING in 2011! We met & succeeded our expenses! YEA! And AMEN! THANK YOU for walking by FAITH and TRUSTING GOD with your precious resources! Our s is a special & unique church! We are being good STEWARDS of GOD S GIFTS! May we continue in that same way for 2012! VALENTINE S DAY! Being single (not coupled), days like this can be fun, or not! Our s is a couples culture. I did feel more accepted while married than when I divorced. I am at peace with where I am now, but there are times.. So please remember the single persons in our midst, those widowed, divorced, separated, never married! Show a little love! WHAT? NOW WHAT? WHAT IS NOW? OKAY! I know that the NEW structure has raised MANY QUESTIONS! That is what happens with CHANGE! Our HOPE and GOAL for this way of doing MINISTRY was to provide for FEWER MEETINGS and MORE UNITY in the DIRECTION we are going as a CONGREGATION! I believe we are on our way. PLEASE BE PATIENT! GOD is at WORK IN AND THRU us! It is very exciting to see GOD at work at THUMC! FEBRUARY WILL ALSO BE THE MONTH THAT WE KICK OFF OUR 50 TH ANNIVERSARY ACTIVITIES! IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN HELPING US PLAN, PLEASE LET ME KNOW! CONFIRMATION CLASS 2012! I am SO excited that we will have a confirmation class this year. Our current 7 th and 8 th graders have been invited to participate AND to secure a mentor for this faith lifting experience! APRIL 15, 2012 will be CONFIRMATION SUNDAY. Please pray for our confirmands and our time together. This is one of those responsibilities that pastors have that I cherish! BLACK HISTORY MONTH! I mentioned that my uncles were/are Tuskeegee Airmen. The movie, Red Tails, was an exciting movie to experience. It is not the only movie about the Tuskeegee Airmen. During this month of Black History, why don t you try to learn something NEW. I know that our library will be helpful in this adventure. THE CAMPAIGN BEGINS! I shared in church that the campaign for the 2012 election began the last weekend in January. I have mixed emotions about this whole process. Although I went through this in 2008, I was serving as a District Superintendent. That makes a BIG difference for me. I love serving Trinity Heights! You are a great church! A flagship church! A caring church! That is how I know that this is a calling to run for Bishop! God knows my heart! God is first, #1 on my list! It is God s call upon my life that has given me life. My heart s desire is to serve God first! That is what I am doing. So let us, please, pray for God s Will to be done. AMEN? AMEN! In Jesus Love & Service, Pastor Cheryl

If you have not already received an application, you may pick one up at the church office or from Stephanie Anton. Applications are due by April 1. Children s Sunday School Lessons for February 5 th Mary and Martha Luke 10: th Jesus Blesses the Children Mark 10: th Two by Two Mark 6:6b th Jesus and Zacchaeus Luke 19:1-10 Adult Sunday School Classes On Sundays, ANYONE IS WELCOME to join any of our six adult Sunday School classes. Bridge Builders (Room 103) lessons in February will be based on the book of Galatians. One of the main themes of the Book of Galatians is found in 3:11: The righteous shall live by faith. Not only are we saved by faith (John 3:16; Ephesians 2:8-9), but the life of the believer in Christ- day by day, moment by moment- is lived by and through that faith. Our lessons will help us understand the concept of faith and freedom. Another topic we will explore is the role of rules and law in developing our faith. The longest-formed class at Trinity Heights, Bridge Builders invites you to join them anytime! Challengers (Room201) will be led by Sparky and Marilyn Colladay for January through March. The lesson title is Christian Traditions, which will cover the various aspects of how we worship. The class is a mixed group, with the majority retired, but also younger people still in the working world. The Challengers have a social event each month. The ladies meet at the Breadbasket the 1 st Monday of the month for coffee. The class welcomes you to become part of their group. Dream Makers (Room 203) will be continuing a series of stand-alone video messages by Rev. Amy Lippoldt titled across creation. This video series uses the natural world as an invitation to spiritual reflection. By pairing earth s wonders and scripture s wisdom we can reflect on life, faith and our relationships with God. Many of the Dream Makers class are in their late 50 s and 60 s, and are still working. They welcome any age person. Faith Builders (Room 101) will be studying Adam Hamilton s Enough: Discovering Joy Through Simplicity and Generosity. This study looks at the power money has in our lives and shows the importance of using it wisely through the Bible s wisdom. Faith Builders is a growing class of 30 and 40 year olds studying relevant topics related to society and the church. You are welcome to become a part! Life Group (Cry Room) will be doing a series of stand-alone video messages by Rev. Amy Lippoldt titled across creation. This video series uses the natural world as an invitation to spiritual reflection. By pairing earth s wonders and scripture s wisdom we can reflect on life, faith and our relationships with God. This class is a collection of adults with high school/college age children. Anyone is welcome to visit or join anytime! Wesley Workers (Room 204) follow an eclectic path of Christian nurture. In January, the class will be finishing their study of James W. Moore s Six Amazing Bible Studies. In February, they will begin Dr. Adam Hamilton s six week study When Christians Get It Wrong. This DVD will outline his thoughts and the class will discuss them. Wesley Workers are primarily retirement age, and enjoy getting together for social events. Visitors are more than welcome! Valentines WOW Activity The elementary children are invited to decorate sugar cookies at 6:00 on February 15 th, after the WOW meal. Everything will be provided. Please come and join in the fun! Lenten Bible Study All are invited to attend the 2012 Lenten Bible Study. This year s study will be Journey to Hope. We will meet at 3pm in Fellowship Hall beginning on February 26 th and continuing through April 1 st. There will be a sign-up sheet available in the Narthex starting February 5 th.
3 Confirmation Class Beginning Soon Families of 7 th and 8 th graders should have received a letter announcing the schedule for this year s Confirmation Class. This year s class will have their first meeting on Wednesday, February 15 th, at 6pm in the Dream Maker s classroom off of Murray Hall. The classes will continue through April 11 th. Confirmation Sunday will be April 15 th with a special reception from 10:15-11:05 in Fellowship Hall. Please make sure you mark these dates on your calendars. Scoop on Youth Group Regular Wednesday night Youth Groups will continue through the month of February. Come on out and bring a friend! Both trips will be here in Kansas, which will help minimize costs this year. Trip #1 will be to Shiloh Ranch Ministries in Solomon and is open to all youth 5 th - 12 th grades. It will take place May 29-June 1. Trip #2 will take us to inner-city Kansas City and youth 8 th -12 th grades are invited to participate. Place your order with a participating youth on Sunday, January 29 th or Wednesday, February 1. Subs will be available for pick-up after services on Sunday, February 5. CALLING ALL YOUTH in fifth grade through high school! The Youth Bell Choir is beginning again! Come be a part of this fun activity - February 1. We practice in the choir room and will begin at 7:00 p.m. and plan to end at 7:30 when we will put away the bells and be ready to leave about 5 minutes later. If you have any questions please call Pam Wedel at or me at pcwedel@cox.net Celebration of Love Service February 12th we will again meet together with other Methodist churches for a Celebration of Love Service. There will be a meal with a service to follow. Watch for more details! Asbury Park Valentine Fund Raiser The 7 th annual Valentine Fundraiser will be Friday, February 10, 2012 at the Mosley Street Melodrama in Wichita. Doors will open at 5:45 pm and bidding starts for the Silent Auction Gift Baskets. The Buffet Dinner will be served at 6:15 pm and the show will begin at 7:30 pm. The Mosley Street Melodrama is well-known for reviving the 40 year tradition of old melodrama, taking you back to the Old West where villains abound and heroes save the day. The audience gets involved as they sigh for the dainty heroine, cheer for the hero, and boo and hiss the villain. The melodrama is followed by an olio a musical comedy revue full of singing, dancing, and laughs provided by some of the best talent Wichita has to offer. Proceeds from the 2012 Valentine s Fundraiser will benefit Asbury Park s Good Samaritan Fund. This fund helps underwrite the cost for assisted living and nursing care residents who have depleted their personal financial resources. If you have questions contact Carrie Herman at Asbury Park at
4 Respite Care has been busily accepting donations, sorting, arranging and pricing the items for the annual This n That Sale this Friday, January 27th, 5:00-8 pm, and Saturday the 28th, 8 am - 12 noon. MISSION COMMITTEE ACTIVITIES The February food collection will be canned fruits, soups and/or paper products. Your donations may be placed in the grocery cart in the main hallway or on the collection table in the North Hall near Fellowship Hall. The response to our food collection was great last month and we delivered over 240 pounds of food items to the Salvation Army. We appreciate your support so very much. Phyllis Greene We are there in Haiti, going into the third year since the devastating earthquake. United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) has worked tirelessly since the earthquake to bring restoration, healing, and hope to the people of Haiti. In the early recovery phase, which continues today, UMCOR s work has been facilitated by our strong connections forged over decades of service in Haiti. Together with our partners, UMCOR is advancing work in the fields of education, health and hygiene, shelter and reconstruction, livelihoods, and capacity strengthening. Please give to continue to make this immediate and long-term work possible. You may make your check payable to Trinity Heights UM Church with "Haiti Emergency" Advance # on the memo line. UMCOR provides emergency relief in many areas of the world. To find out more about UMCOR s ministries, please visit umcor.org. 5 Church Child Care: Help Wanted Cassandra Conley, our child care provider in the nursery has resigned effective January 30, If you are interested, or know someone who is interested in this position, please call Nancy Parsons, Church Secretary for an application form and job description. The hours are: Sundays: 8:30-12:30 (This time provides child care for both church services.) Special services at Christmas and Easter, time to be determined. Small Study Groups - may be an evening or Sunday afternoon. The position is paid an hourly rate. The Staff Parish Committee will meet soon and establish the hourly rate of pay. Thanks, Willis Heck, Chair Staff Parish Committee Fundraising through Dillons Fundraising with Dillons Dollars is now more profitable and easier for everyone! It is called The Neighborhood Rewards Program. All you do is purchase a gift card from Trinity Heights which is reloadable at Dillons Courtesy booth before shopping. When our church has earned $4,000 or more in Reloads, Dillons will issue a check to Trinity Heights for at least $ This should simplify the process that we have been following and increase our earning from 4% to 5%. You may reload your card for any amount up to $500. Just remember that the card does need to be reloaded BEFORE you pass through the checkout. The more you reload your card, the more money our church can make, the profit is 25% more than we have been making. Thanks for your support! Bill Kepley Movers & Shakers Fitness Class Is a more fit physique one of your New Year's resolutions? We have the answer! Tracie Strain, A.C.E., Wellness Director at Newton Recreation Center, brings equipment, music, and fitness routines to Movers & Shakers Fitness Classes, Mondays and Wednesdays. While giving us outstanding aerobic, resistance, and stretching instruction, she brings more ideas. For instance, did you know that "Sitting makes you fat"? According to Health.com, November 2011, "Sitting can have just as great an effect on your weight than eating or exercise, all because our metabolism engine is fueled by constant little movements." Get off the chair and join us for the health of it! Please call Barb McCall if you would like more information: Susie Wickiser and Barb McCall Dear Scholarship Committee, Thank you so much for the scholarship money that you have provided me with this school year. It has helped provide the opportunity to take on the resident assistant role on campus and learn more about myself. Thank you, Matt Malo Dear THUMC Christian Education Committee, Thank you for the gift card, it will help to by some food at school. Nate Boyles I want to thank you for the Dillon s Dollars. I appreciate your generous gift, your love and support throughout the years. I pray God s blessing for each of you. Nicki van der Weg Trinity Heights Friends, All of us at Sunset School are so grateful for the many ways you support our school community!
