1 The Trinitarian Trinity Heights United Methodist Church, Newton, Kansas JULY 2017 From the Pastor I scream, you scream, we all scream for ICE CREAM! July is upon us and is there really anything better than a wonderful cup or cone of Ice Cream. What is your favorite flavor? I remember the first time I got to have Neapolitan. I couldn t believe Ice Cream with three colors. No one else in my family thought much of this Ice Cream they wanted one flavor and that was it, no mixing of flavors for anyone else in my family. Personally, I have always thought it was a great picture of the trinity. Three flavors, three colors, all ice cream. Actually it comes from Italy and may have started as the three colors of the Flag of Italy. In Ireland the flavors are vanilla, lemon, and strawberry. Whatever the colors or flavors, I just love Ice Cream! Now I have your attention for my article for this month. July is missions month! Katie Brenneman is going to India; we are able to be a part of her trip and give her support while she goes. Now, I am hopeful we will not just give her an offering. but remember her in our prayers as she is in Calcutta this month. What a multitude of learning and experiences. You will find ten ways to pray for both Katie and Ann on another page of the newsletter. One of our prayers for Katie was already answered; she was able to arrive with all her luggage and that was one of the things we prayed for. Keep praying, another culture is so much different. I would also say praying for mom, dad, and brother never hurts; a month can seem like a long time. Ann Walker leaves for China. What a great gift to people in China -- someone to help them learn English. We have sent American gifts with her for the other adults she will help. We will pray for her as she leaves for several weeks. We helped her to go and will look forward to hearing about what it was like to be teaching in China when she returns. Now, what about your missionary moment? We need you involved in VBS, this is our mission field. We need you to volunteer for one evening or part of an evening. Having help for any part of the evening or someone to come and watch the opening or closing is helpful. We re never too old for VBS; we can use your help. This is your missionary moment! We have the opportunity to reach out and touch the lives of the kids who come to VBS. If nothing else, come and get a snow cone on Thursday night. Should be good! MISSION NEWS Our respite care mission has taken on a new responsibility for the summer.

It is difficult and quite challenging to find care in the summer for children with disabilities. A summer pilot program is being offered to families that receive funds from HMCDDO.

Sadly, after all these years, specific programs designed for children with disabilities are still lacking.

3 MISSION NEWS Our respite care mission has taken on a new responsibility for the summer. Financial funds received from the Harvey-Marion Community Developmental Disability Organization made it possible for Trinity Heights Respite Care to provide more hours for summer care. It is difficult and quite challenging to find care in the summer for children with disabilities. A summer pilot program is being offered to families that receive funds from HMCDDO. But even with the funds to provide care, it is difficult to find activities that our clients can attend. Sadly, after all these years, specific programs designed for children with disabilities are still lacking. We are experiencing a demanding summer and it is an eye opening learning environment for our summer pilot program. I have become more aware of the lack of opportunities for children with disabilities in our community. But we accept this challenge and are thinking outside the box as we continue creating our own activities for our clients. With much thought and prayers, Ken and I have decided to begin a new chapter in our life. It is time for me to become less involved in Trinity Heights Respite Care. The last four years have been an awesome experience for me. I have always taken great pride in addressing the responsibilities of my job. I truly loved my position as director. I have been blessed to work with compassionate/ caring co-workers and parents. Trinity Heights United Methodist Church members and Pastor Donna have always been supportive of our mission and the unique challenges we strive to meet. The respite care board members have been a consistent blessing to me and the children we serve. Nevertheless, now is the time for me to move in a new direction. Ken and I look forward to spending more time with our children and grandchildren. Thank you! Connie SALVATION ARMY The Salvation Army needs our help in feeding the families that come to them for assistance during the summer months. The children need food when they are not eating breakfast and lunch at school. So if you could pick up a can of vegetables or soup, a bag of rice or beans, a box of cereal. We won t notice one or two more items on our ticket, but together we can make a difference in the lives of families that are not as fortunate as we are. Thank You and God Bless, Mission Committee The church doesn t take a summer vacation. Ministry and programs continue and the bills still must be paid each month, including the mortgage on the building. Please don t forget your contribution to Trinity Heights whenever you enjoy some time away this summer. When you are in town - be sure to join us each Sunday at 9:00 or 11:11 and at 10:10 for Sunday School. Brown Bag Fellowship Everyone Welcome If you enjoy eating with others as you have a time of conversation and fellowship together -- then the Brown Bag Fellowship group is for you! The group meets on the 2nd Thursday of each month at 12:00 noon in Room 103 (the room off of Murray Hall). Each person brings their own sack lunch -- homemade or your favorite fast food -- and they enjoy a devotion or thought for the day, eating their lunch and visiting together. Everyone is welcome to come! (This group was formerly the Singles Brown Bag that is now being opened to all who would enjoy coming.)

Pray for Katie and Ann to feel safe in their surroundings, and to meet people where they can find friends for their time away. 7. Pray for restful sleep, a feeling of safety in new surroundings, a comfortable bed. 8. Pray for a deeper understanding of a different culture and what is valued in that culture. 9. Pray for a deeper understanding of poverty and the people it affects. 10. Pray for their families waiting at home to have peace while they are away and have confidence that they are each safe.
