1 The Trinitarian Trinity Heights United Methodist Church, Newton, Kansas July 2013 From the Pastor From the Pastor Why do people come to church? That s a question that started our last session of the Animate study a few weeks ago. We filled up the white board in our classroom with answers. While the primary reason people come to church is hopefully to experience the love of God and grow in relationship to God, the secondary reasons are as varied as the congregation. Do you find church an important place for friendships and support? I do! That s why I m really excited for our July 7 th worship gathering as a whole congregation. We will worship at 10:00 a.m. in the Sanctuary. Eat a pot-luck at 11:15 in the fellowship hall (bring a dish and table service for your family) and play games (indoor and outdoor for all ages) after we eat. Consider this a sort of family reunion and encourage people you haven t seen in church for awhile to come! Do you find church a place to study scripture and have your mind engaged? I do! That s why we are working on enhancing Wednesday night activities this fall for all ages. Along with youth group for middle and high school students we will be adding activities for children and for adults. Do you have ideas for what Wednesday nights should look like? Feel free to me or call the office. Do you find church a place from which you can impact the world? I do! That s why I m so glad to announce that Trinity Heights donated $3800 toward United Methodist Open Door in support of the Bishop s Bicycle Challenge. I didn t succeed in raising more money than Bishop Jones, his $12,000 blew my total of $7,800 out of the water but I am overjoyed that together we were able to do so much for Open Door. Those are just a few of the reasons that people come to church. What others can you think of? How are we addressing those at Trinity Heights? If you see a gap between the why and the what, I d invite you to share that with me. Together we glorify God by our worship, our study, our relationships, our service. 2 Christian Ed. Connection Trinity Heights Campers Trinity Heights awarded 5 church camp scholarships to our children and youth this year. Here is a list of the United Methodist camps the children attended this summer. When you see them around the church, ask them about their camp experiences. Little Explorers Overnight Camp Mason Crumine Young Wonders Camp Lauren Anton Caileane Thurston Elementary Explorers Camp Jaden Anton Jeremiah Swisher VBS Everywhere Fun Fair runs July from 6:00-8:00 pm. If you haven t turned in your registration card, please do so as soon as possible. Anyone that has items from Japan, Zimbabwe, Australia, Mexico or the United Kingdom and would be willing to let the church use them for decorations during VBS please talk to Stephanie. We could use the following items: plastic fruits and vegetables, colorful pottery, straw mats, baskets, colorful fabric, jute rugs or any other items that would be found at a bazaar. I am also in need of volunteers to make corn muffins and rice crispy treats for the snacks. The Challenger Class gathered at Mojos Coffee Bar on Friday, June 28, to enjoy snacks and view an exhibit of photographs by Barb & Dick McCall. The exhibit will continue through July 15. The class will not meet on Sunday, July 7, as there will be an all church worship at 10:00 am followed by games and a meal. The lessons for the next quarter will be based on the theme "This is God's World". We will look at other cultures, other people, other places, other religions and will hopefully discuss how they fit into "God's World". On Sunday, July 14, the class will review their gathering at Mojos Coffee Bar and the "Favorite Photos/Stories" cards. How do the photo subjects fit into "God's World"? The class sponsored a bus trip to Des Moines & Pella, Iowa the first week of May. The goal was to see the 85,000 tulips planted in Pella for their Tulip Festival. Sunday, July 21, we'll see a power point about the trip using photos from Anita Houdek, Ruth Stewart (Anita's sister) and Dick McCall. Sunday, July 28, will start our adventure into Jordan. Using power point we will look at Jerash, Monument of Moses, Madaba & Petra as they exist today and reflect on how they played a part in Bible stories and past history Scoop on Youth Group June has been a fun month! 2 summer youth group meetings, 2 hang-out times at Norm s Coffee Bar (where we did some awesome karaoke!), a trip to Shiloh Ranch, and a pool party. July will be busy with 2 more youth group meetings on the schedule, along with an outing to the outlet mall and preparations for the mission trip. Thanks for your support of the Canada Youth Missions Team! As of press time, Montana Garrison leads the King/Queen for a Day collection contest. Your loose change is going to a contingency fund in case of unexpected expenses on the trip. The winner will be announced in next month s issue. From Salvation Army Now that we are in the month of June, believe it or not it is time to once again think about the start of school for next year. The Salvation Army will again offer our School Supply Program. This program is designed to assist children of families that are having a financial crisis getting their children ready for the new school year. Our goal is to make available, required school supplies to all children in need. Assistance that you are able to give us will be greatly appreciated. Marcia Brazil, Service Coordinator Husky Liners Camp Horizon Golf Scramble So many of us have enjoyed the benefits of Camp Horizon over the years. The scenic beauty, the sounds of laughter and the presence of the Holy Spirit. A major fundraiser for Camp Horizon in the past has been its annual Golf Scramble. The monies generated by this event have helped to reduce the daily cost of camping per person from $ (actual cost) to a charged rate of $ This year the Scramble is being held on August 10, 2013, at Quail Ridge Golf Course in Winfield. Quail Ridge has been so helpful in the past and, through it's head pro, a connection to us all through as a member of Winfield FUMC's UMM group. See the bulletin board outside Fellowship Hall for details & registration forms.
3 Missions As you may know, I have resigned as director of Respite Care to go back to school full time. The search committee for a new director includes Pastor Amy, Joyce Pankratz, David Williams and Carol Friesen. If you know of a candidate, feel free to talk to any board member. Board members from THUMC are Bev Gering, Jennifer Miles, Betty Mustoe, Jean Pauley and Don Swender. Contact me for a copy of the job description. I am grateful to the Trinity Heights Respite Care board of directors and staff, and the staff and members of Trinity Heights United Methodist Church, who have taught me much about civic duty, service and the meaning of community. I look forward to seeing you at our next fundraising event, This Is My Father s World, on Sunday, July 28 at 3:00pm. Please invite your friends and come to the sanctuary to enjoy a celebration of beauty that includes Duane Graham s all-new photos of natural wonders from Kansas to Morocco, Jesse Graber s humorous drawings, Bob Regier s art, and live music by Vada Snider (flute) and Karen Loucks (piano). This is a show the whole family can enjoy, and afterwards, we ll have ice cream! All we ask is a donation to Respite Care. -- Cathy Anderson The July collection will focus on school supplies. Donations may be placed in the grocery cart in the main hallway or on the collection table in the North Hall near Fellowship Hall. Thank You! Thank You! If you are interested in delivering a month s collection, please give us a call, all help is appreciated. Deliveries will be made in mid July so school supplies can be prepared for children before school. Mission Opportunities How are you in Mission for others? Would you like to participate in a Mission Project? Have these questions ever come to mind? If so, we have some mission opportunities for you. Cookson Hills, Oklahoma The Kechi UMC has a September trip planned to Cookson Hills in Oklahoma and to date they have 10 people going. They will take 15 people. One person from THUMC is planning to go. If you are interested please contact Cynthia Wyss at Oklahoma Disaster Response Teams The Kansas West Conference is accepting groups going to Oklahoma, as Disaster Response Teams. We have some THUMC youth with an interest. The conference has guidelines for groups going. Please contact the church office for more information. Asbury Park An Asbury Park Project is planned for later this summer or fall. We will be refurbishing picnic tables and benches at one of the shelter areas. Please contact the Greene's, Mission Committee Chairs if you are willing to help with this project, Ah, summer, what power you have to make us suffer and like it. Russell Baker Blessings to all as you serve others.

Thank you, Jeff Stauffer Tim Stauffer Julie Janzen Dear Christian Friends at Newton Trinity Heights U.M.C., We wanted to send a great big thank you to all of those that came to Camp Horizon this spring to help us get everything ready for Summer Camp. We appreciate your willingness to help in whatever way needed. Without volunteers like you, we would not have been ready for the camping season. We had so many projects going on this spring that we needed all of the help we could get to be ready for campers. Camp is now in full swing and we are excited about having the opportunity to share the love of Christ with children of all ages. Thank you again. Your continued commitment to Camp Horizon is appreciated more than you can possibly imagine.
