Preparation for Worship: Read Psalm 150 (Lutheran Service Book or Pew Bible) Opening Hymn: 790 Praise to the Lord, The Almighty LSB 790 Invocation We invoke ( call upon ) the name of the one true God Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. P In the name of the Triune God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. C Amen. Confession and Absolution We come before our Holy God recognizing that we are sinful and daily need His forgiveness. P God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. C If we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. 1

2 P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. C If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:5, 7-9) P Let us pray C Almighty God, our Maker and Redeemer: We confess that we are sinful by nature, and have sinned against You in our thoughts, words, and actions. We have not loved You above all things. We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. Have mercy on us, and, for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ, forgive us our sins. P Jesus Christ is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. We are forgiven! With boldness and confidence we may approach the throne to find grace to help in time of need. 3 Prayer of the Day P We pray: Almighty and everlasting God, You have given us grace to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity and to confess and worship you, the one true God. Keep us steadfast in this faith and defend us from all adversities; for You, O Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, live and reign, one God, now and forever. C Amen. First Reading Romans 5:1-5 (NKJV) 1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; 4 and perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us. Gospel Reading Matthew 3:13-17 (ESV) P The Gospel reading is from Matthew 3: C Sanctify us by Your truth, O LORD. Your Word is truth! 13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. 14 John would have prevented him, saying, I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me? 15 But Jesus answered him, Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness. Then he consented. 16 And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; 17 and behold, a voice from heaven said, This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased. 4 582 God's Word Is Our Great Heritage LSB 582 Public domain Athanasian Creed (Selected sections - with Hymn 506) This creed is named after St. Athanasius, a staunch defender of the Christian faith in the fourth century. It was prepared to assist the Church in combating two errors that undermined Bible teaching. One error denied that God s Son and the Holy Spirit are of one being or Godhead with the Father. The other error denied that Jesus Christ is true God and true man in one person. The Athanasian Creed continues to serve the Christian Church as a confession of our faith in the one, true, Triune God. C Now this is the true Christian faith: We worship one God in three persons and three persons in one God, without mixing the persons or dividing the divine being. For each person the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit is distinct, but the deity of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is one, equal in glory and coeternal in majesty. What the Father is, so is the Son, and so is the Holy Spirit. 4

5 The Father is uncreated, the Son uncreated, the Holy Spirit uncreated; the Father is infinite, the Son infinite, the Holy Spirit infinite; the Father is eternal, the Son eternal, the Holy Spirit eternal; yet they are not three who are eternal, but there is one who is eternal, just as they are not three who are uncreated, nor three who are infinite, but there is one who is uncreated and one who is infinite. In the same way the Father is almighty, the Son is almighty, the Holy Spirit is almighty; yet they are not three who are almighty, but there is one who is almighty. So the Father is God, the Son is God, the Holy Spirit is God; yet they are not three Gods, but one God. So the Father is Lord, the Son is Lord, the Holy Spirit is Lord; yet they are not three Lords, but one Lord. For just as Christian truth compels us to confess each person individually to be God and Lord, so the true Christian faith forbids us to speak of three Gods or three Lords. 506 Glory Be to God the Father LSB 506 v

6 The Father is neither made nor created nor begotten of anyone. The Son is neither made nor created, but is begotten of the Father alone. The Holy Spirit is neither made nor created nor begotten, but proceeds from the Father and the Son. So there is one Father, not three Fathers; one Son, not three Sons; one Holy Spirit, not three Holy Spirits. And within this Trinity none comes before or after; none is greater or inferior, but all three persons are coequal and coeternal, so that in every way, as stated before, all three persons are to be worshiped as one God and one God worshiped as three persons. It is furthermore necessary for eternal salvation truly to believe that our Lord Jesus Christ also took on human flesh. Now this is the true Christian faith: We believe and confess that our Lord Jesus Christ, God s Son, is both God and man. He is God, eternally begotten from the nature of the Father, and He is man, born in time from the nature of His mother, fully God, fully man, with rational soul and human flesh, 6

7 equal to the Father as to His deity, less than the Father as to His humanity; and though He is both God and man, Christ is not two persons but one, one not by changing the deity into flesh, but by taking the humanity into God; one indeed, not by mixture of the natures, but by unity in one person; for just as the rational soul and flesh are one human being, so God and man are one Christ. He suffered for our salvation, descended into hell, rose the third day from the dead. He ascended into heaven, is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty, and from there will come to judge the living and the dead This is the true Christian faith. Public domain 7

Flyers and registration forms are also available in the entryway if you know of anyone who would be interested in sending their children to our VBS it will be held Mon. Fri., July 23 rd 27 th from 9am- 11:30am. Theme: Who is Like the Lord? The CLC s TVBS program is sending us 2 teachers to assist us as well (Justin Winters and Dan Lau, high school graduates from Immanuel Lutheran High School, Eau Claire, WI). CLC News Website Upgrades for ilc.edu: Over the past year a significant upgrade to the Immanuel Lutheran High School & College (Eau Claire, WI) website, ilc.edu, has been in the works. This exciting and enhanced update is now live to the public. The website is designed to be used by personal computer and especially by mobile devices as use of these is becoming more common. One may also subscribe to receive daily s of content that changes, e.g., Immanuel's daily bulletin and audio of the daily chapels. Streaming and archived videos of campus events are also still available. Be sure to browse through the website with its many features.
