3 Happy Easter!!! FROM THE DESK OF FR. MIKE Congratulations to all our second grade students that received their First Holy Communion Saturday morning. There is a joyful and heartwarming innocence in these children as they open up their hands and their hearts to receive the Eucharist for the very first time. I ask you to join me in praying that they develop a love for and regular reception of the Eucharist throughout their lives. The example set by their families will guide them in always opening their hands and their hearts to the sacrament for spiritual nourishment and strength. Thank you to all involved in preparing the students and working together for a very special celebration for them. A letter was sent this past week to registered parishioners regarding the prayerful process our parish is undertaking regarding the future Mass schedule. More information will be presented via our parish website and parish bulletin. We will decide together how the Holy Spirit is guiding us in the decisions we will make as a parish the weekend of May 20th and 21st. The new Mass schedule for our parish will begin the weekend of July 1st. I recently came across the following cliches. Perhaps they will speak to you the way they spoke to me... Good things come to those who wait...if they work very hard while waiting... There but for the grace of God go I...God and the smart people God sent my way... If at first you don't succeed try, try again...and then find someone to help you. A good beginning makes a good ending...if accompanied by a very good middle. The lesser of two evils...is still evil. Damned if you do, and damned if you don't...when that's the case I say; Don't. Better the devil you know than the devil you don't know...better yet, improve the company you keep. It will all work out for the best...if you work to make it happen. When the going gets tough, the tough get going...in what direction is the key. Character is what you do when no one is looking All interested parishioners are invited to participate in a meeting this Wednesday evening with Brother Joe of Catholic Charities beginning at 7:00pm in the Parish Center Conference Room. Details about the meeting are listed in today's bulletin. God bless you in living the resurrection in your lives this Easter.

4 Home: Refugees and Our Catholic Faith With Brother Joe Schenk, OFM Conv Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at 7:00pm, Church of St. Mary Parish Center Conference Room, 201 E. Illinois Road, Lake Forest The United Nations estimates that there are currently about 65,000,000 refugees and internally displaced people in fear for their lives in the world today an all-time high. Of these, the United States is expected to take in about 70,000 people about.5% of the total. Pope Francis has made the raising of awareness around the plight of refugees one of the priorities of his pontificate. What exactly is a refugee? How do refugees end up in the U.S.? How does our faith determine our response to these people? Br. Joseph Schenk, OFM Conv., is the Community Resource Developer for Catholic Charities Refugee Resettlement Program for the Archdiocese of Chicago. In this capacity, Br. Joseph helps to engage parishes and other community partners in ministry to recentlyresettled refugees in the Chicago area. Prior to his current position, Br. Joseph worked with low-income elderly in Rogers Park and as a director of a human services organization in Brooklyn, New York. 7 Let Us Pray: Reflections on the Meaning of Our Catholic Liturgy Part VII: The Communion Rite (by Fr. Ron Lewinski) The Lord s Prayer The Lord s Prayer appears to have entered the order of Mass in the 4 th century. With its themes of daily bread, forgiveness, and mutual peace, this prayer was thought to be an ideal preparation for receiving Holy Communion. The prayer that immediately follows the Our Father is called the embolism. It is simply an expansion of the Lord s Prayer focusing on our need to be delivered from evil and distress and to live in hope awaiting the second coming of Christ. The congregation responds with the doxology: For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours, now and forever. The Rite of Peace There is evidence of a Rite of Peace or Kiss of Peace as early as the 5 th century. At one point in history it was placed at the end of the Universal Prayer (Intercessions) as a way of saying, Before you come to offer your gift, be at peace with your brothers and sisters. The current placement of the Rite of Peace is intended to be a sign of our willingness to live in the peace and unity which our reception of Communion commits us to. Lamb of God As we sing the Lamb of God during the breaking of the bread, we recall St. Paul s instruction to the Corinthians when he said, Because the Bread is one, all who eat it form one body (I Cor 10:17). In the early Church this symbolic gesture of breaking the bread was so highly regarded that the term, Breaking of the Bread, became the name for the entire Mass. The Breaking of the Bread reminds us of the Lord himself who was broken for our sake. Invitation to Communion The priest elevates the Body & Blood of Christ in a gesture of invitation saying, Behold the Lamb of God (see John 1:29, 26). Our response is taken from the biblical account of the centurion who pleaded with Jesus to heal his servant: Lord, I am not worthy (Mt 8:8). When we approach the minister of Communion we bow before the Sacred Host and Chalice as the minister says, The Body of Christ or the Blood of Christ. Our Amen is a simple response with immense implications. It means first of all that what we receive is the true and real Body and Blood of Christ. It also means that we are prepared to take the words of the consecration seriously, namely, Do this in memory of me. Christ asks of each of us to be eucharist for others, to be bread broken and wine poured out for others. Our Amen is a commitment to imitate the servant Jesus. Furthermore, with our Amen we proclaim our belief that when we eat and drink at the Lord s table, we become the Body of Christ. St. Augustine (4 th c) put it beautifully: If therefore you are the body of Christ and members, your mystery has been placed on the Lord s table; you are receiving your mystery. To that which you are, you answer, Amen, and by responding you agree. For you hear, The Body of Christ, and you respond, Amen. Be a member of the body of Christ, so that your Amen may be true. The norm established in the Dioceses of the United States is that the communicant is to receive Communion standing. The importance of everyone observing the same posture is to clearly demonstrate the Church s unity. This is not a time to display one s private piety or individuality by choosing another posture. The importance of unity in the communion rite is fostered and demonstrated by our singing together during the communion rite. The faithful may receive Communion either in the hand or on the tongue. The inspiring words of St. Cyril of Jerusalem (4 th c) offer a unique commentary on receiving Communion in the hand. He tells us: When you approach, take care not to do so with your hand stretched out and your fingers open or apart, but rather place your left hand as a throne beneath your right, as befits one who is about to receive the King. Remember that in Baptism and Confirmation we were anointed with sacred chrism oil designating our bodies as holy and sacred to God. Thus we can reverently receive the Lord in our hands. If we receive on the tongue, the communicant is expected to open his/her mouth wide enough and place his/her tongue forward so the minister can administer the host without difficulty or danger of losing the host. The Church strongly recommends receiving Holy Communion under both forms, i.e. host and chalice, so that by means of the signs Communion may stand out more clearly as a participation in the sacrifice actually being celebrated (Roman Missal #85). However, even if one receives only from the chalice or only under the species of bread, one receives the whole Christ. After a brief period of silent prayer the Communion Rite concludes with the Prayer after Communion, in which the priest prays that what we have just celebrated may bear fruit within us and give us the grace to take Christ into the world. Questions to think and pray about: Reflect more deeply on the words, Do this in memory of me. And in light of this, think about what your Amen means when you receive Communion. St. John Paul II referred to the Mass as the School of Love. What do you think he meant by that?

8 Mon., May 1 Acts 6:8-15; Jn 6:22-29 You are looking for me not because you saw signs, but because you ate the loaves and were filled. According to John s Gospel, it s the day after the feeding of the five thousand and the crowd is still hungry. Jesus understands their physical hunger, but he wants them to acknowledge a deeper hunger. So he encourages them to work for food that endures. Ironically, we in the church can be just as spiritually hungry as anyone else. We hunger for truth, belonging, beauty and wonder, but we do not seek it as the crowd did that day. We make excuses: we re too busy, we re too tired. Bread of heaven, feed my spirit and nurture my soul. Tues., May 2 Acts 7:51-8:1a; Jn 6:30-35 Athanasius, bishop, doctor of the church Stephen said to the people, the elders, and the scribes: You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always oppose the Holy Spirit. Yikes! Stephen s blunt words remind me of John the Baptist calling the Pharisees a brood of vipers. It s a style of preaching that is pretty much guaranteed to make people mad. In Stephen s case, it made the elders and scribes so mad they ran him out of town and stoned him. They wouldn t even listen to his testimony, which makes me wonder how often we do the same thing. Since we can never know how God might speak to us, it s important to listen to a variety of voices. May our hearts and ears be open and willing to learn. Wed., May 3 1 Cor 15:1-8; Jn 14:6-14 Philip and James, apostles Last of all, as to one born abnormally, he appeared to me. Serendipity refers to experiences and occasions when something unexpected comes our way. For Christians, Easter is a whole season of serendipity. The women go to the tomb expecting to prepare a Readings for the Third Week of Easter body for burial; they find the tomb empty and encounter an angel who tells them that Christ has risen. As two disciples walk to Emmaus, they meet a stranger whom they later realize is Jesus himself. One of the most vivid examples of Easter serendipity did not happen to any of the first disciples, but to a man named Saul the same Saul who was present when Stephen was stoned to death, the same Saul, who by his own assessment was unfit to be called an apostle. You come to us in unexpected ways, O God. Thurs., May 4 Acts 8:26-40; Jn 6:44-51 The Spirit said to Philip, Go and join up with that chariot. Philip was one of seven deacons chosen to assist the disciples in the service ministries of the early church. Some of them were evangelists as well. Philip first preached to the Samaritans even though Jews and Samaritans had been enemies for generations. In today s reading, Philip is told to go to Gaza by a particular route and to join a certain chariot. Inside the chariot is a court official of the Ethiopian queen. As a eunuch and a gentile, this man would have been an outcast to most Jews. But Philip approaches him with compassion, answers his questions, tells him about Jesus, and finally baptizes him. Philip clearly understood that the Gospel was for all people, even those who had previously been excluded from the covenant. Holy God, your love knows no boundaries. Fri., May 5 Acts 9:1-20; Jn 6:52-59 Saul went to the high priest and asked him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus, that, if he should find any men or women who belonged to the Way, he might bring them back to Jerusalem in chains. Saul of Tarsus was a devout, rabbinical Jew. He first appears in the Book of Acts at the stoning of Stephen and now he is breathing murderous threats against those who claimed Jesus was the Messiah. But on the road to Damascus, Saul s life and faith were completely turned upside down, and instead of persecuting Jesus followers, he becomes one. In the same way, we should expect to be changed. God moves, intrudes, calls and pushes; God wants us to be transformed. May we be open to your life-changing love and grace, O God. Sat., May 6 Acts 9:31-42; Jn 6:60-69 The Church throughout all Judea, Galilee, and Samaria was at peace. She was being built up and walked in the fear of the Lord, and with the consolation of the Holy Spirit she grew in numbers. The Book of Acts records the early years of what would eventually be called church. Peter, the disciple who first declared Jesus the Messiah, but also the one who denied knowing Jesus, is clearly the leader of this movement. In today s reading, Peter is traveling and encountering people in need, much as Jesus had done. As he travels, he heals a paralyzed man and then raises Tabitha. These miracles, as well as the acts of compassion and service carried out by Jesus followers, led many to turn to the Lord. God of faith and action, our lives may be the only Gospel others see. 12 Did not our hearts burn within us while He talked to us on the road, while He opened to us the Scriptures? -Luke 24:32 How often do we take the time to discern what Jesus wants from us? Are our prayers always petitions, asking Jesus to do things for us? If so, that s a one-sided relationship. Living our faith means developing a personal relationship with Jesus.
