1 June 11, 2017 The Lord is my Shepherd, there is nothing I shall want (Psalm 21:1) By Elizabeth Smith T here is nothing that I shall want.... Nothing. Nothing? Really, God?! My apologies to the psalmist, but I m sure we can agree that there are plenty of things that most of us want. Good grades, good friendships, good health and good times, just to name a few. World peace, a healed earth, freedom from suffering, and an end to poverty would also probably top the list. And that s just the tip of the iceberg! I want for the cancerstricken to be healed... for hurting people to find happiness... for the spiritually broken to find God... for kindness to replace cruelty and much, much more. That s certainly not nothing. So how do we make sense of passages like this in Scripture? (continued)

3 We know that there are plenty of things we want that we do not have. And what about when we are really hurting or disappointed by the world and the people in it? Are we just supposed to pretend like our feelings and the unfulfilled desires of our heart don t matter? Of course not. You matter, and your feelings matter. Everyone matters to God. The key is what we do with our feelings and our desires. Do we push, fight and grasp for what we want? Or do we trust in God to provide for us? Psalm 21, and many other Bible passages, are an encouragement to us to trust in God for everything, and in everything. Even in the midst of disappointment, suffering, or failure. Think of the trust a child has for his loving parents. When hungry, he doesn t go out and try to get his own food he tells his parents and they feed him! In the same way, we should give our desires to God. In fact, Jesus says, Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! (Matthew 7:9-11) My children do not always appreciate the healthy food I give them. Just like the medicine they sometimes have to take, they cannot see the good that it will do them. We are the same. We do not see that, like the death of Jesus, even the awful things that happen on earth will be redeemed in our lives and the lives of others someday. We simply do not trust God. Jesus is our good shepherd. He will give us what we need. Not necessarily what we want, but what we need, and what is best. Even when it doesn t make sense. Because some day, whether in this life or the next, it will. Whatever burdens you carry, trust that the Lord sees. He sees, knows, and cares. And he has not abandoned you. The Lord is near. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let [our] requests be made known to God. (Philippians 4:5-7) Have you ever seen a child sleeping in her father s arms during a terrifying storm? She can sleep, despite the chaos, because she knows she is safe. You are safe in the arms of the Lord. No matter what. Ask him to open your eyes to his goodness, and let him give you rest. Cast all your anxieties upon the Lord, for He cares for you. (1 Peter 5:7) Parishioner Elizabeth Smith is Associate Director of Catholic Campus Ministry at Gettysburg College.
4 NO LIFE IN THE SPIRIT SESSION THIS WEEK BECAUSE OF JUBILEE DAY OUTREACH On Thursday, June 15, from 9 am to 7 pm, Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish will sponsor a booth at Jubilee Day, the largest one-day street fair on the East Coast. The primary purpose of the booth is to be a means of evangelizing fair-goers through providing free Christian children's material and adult faith information from Saint Paul's Street Evangelism. The booth will be located in the 100th block of E. Main Street. Any faithful Catholic is invited to help with booth activities (handing out material) anytime during the day. Just show up and help! Contact: Alex Bogdanoff, A DIVINE MERCY HOLY HOUR will be observed Sunday June 18, at 3 pm ( The Hour Of Great Mercy Diary 1320 ) in the Divine Mercy Chapel. There will be Eucharistic Adoration, Benediction, Praying of the Chaplet and a reading from Saint Faustina's Diary. In addition, complimentary framed and blessed Divine Mercy images, St. Faustina Diaries, prayer cards, and informational pamphlets will be available. MORNING FAITH MATTERS JOIN US! On Wednesday, June 14, at 9:30 am in the Bayley Conference Room, we conclude our study program, Who Am I To Judge?, featuring Dr. Edward Sri. Challenging our relativistic culture is a daunting task. To do so, we must have a clear understanding of classical, Catholic morality; the significance of virtue in our friendships and relationships; an image of what real freedom is; and a clear vision of learning the art of living. Most importantly, we must grasp that the unifying principle of every encounter must be love. Love must guide what and how we say things, because it must be the reason we say anything at all. Final session in this series. Contact: Mel Lee, melmolee@reagan.com. FAITH MATTERS EVENING Monsignor King concludes his special series on Fundamentals of the Catholic Faith: A Survey of Theology, Wednesday at 7 pm in the Bayley Conference Room. Drop-ins welcome.
