5 Announcements Fellowship Time - You are invited to our fellowship time that is held between worship services. This is a time to visit with friends and meet new ones! We'll have the coffee pot on and some breakfast goodies available in the Café from 8:30 8:55am and from 10:00 10:30am. We will also have coffee in the Fellowship Hall immediately following the 8:15 worship service. Wherever you head for fellowship time, we welcome you and encourage you to come! Children s Christmas Program - We present Star Search! Star Search tells the story of the Savior's birth told from an inspiring perspective. The stars learn that it's not about being the biggest and brightest, but about "being humble, and being kind, if you really wanna be a star! Winter Break Gathering TODAY from 10:15-11:00am at Bistro 150. A time of conversations and coffee for young adults who are home during the holidays and those looking for new ways to connect at ORUMC. We will begin today and end on January 6. All are welcome! For more information, contact Jason at Christmas Poinsettias DEADLINE is today! If you would like to place a poinsettia in memory or honor of a loved one please pick up an envelope at the Welcome Centers or contact Kim at kim.barnes@oakridgeumc.org. The poinsettias are $13.00 each. They are yours to take at any time after the Christmas Eve services. Feed & Seed - Join us Wednesday, December 19 from 5:30-6:30pm in the FLC. This week s menu is Chicken & Dumplings/Broccoli Casserole/Lima Beans/Grilled Chicken and Mac & Cheese for the young children. The cost is $5 per person (family maximum of $20). Reservations and/or cancellations are required by 4:30pm each Monday. Hannah s Haven - The Honor Cards for Hannah's Haven are now ready. If you are interested in purchasing a card, please contact Jane Hahn at janehahn@hotmail.com or at They can be purchased for a minimum donation of $5.00. All proceeds from the sale of the cards goes directly to Hannah's Haven. Stamp Ministry - Please save your cancelled Christmas stamps for the stamp ministry. Remember to cut from the left hand side of the stamp, leaving ½ inch margin. Cut completely from top to bottom and put the stamps in the stamp box that is in the foyer outside the church office. Look at the Stamp Ministry Instructional video on the ORUMC Facebook page if you would like more explanation. 5

6 Boy Scout Fundraiser - Oak Ridge Boy Scout Troop 139 is selling Autobell gift cards for the holiday season. We still have cards! They make excellent and easy!--stocking stuffers, teacher, or employee gifts. Each card costs $20, never expires, and can be used at any location (nearby stores include Greensboro, Jamestown, and Burlington). Purchased cards will arrive on December 17. Please contact our troop at scoutmaster@bsatroop139.com or bring your money (checks made out to Troop 139) and contact info to Tara at the office or order through any ORUMC Scout. This is the troop s annual winter fundraiser. GUM Honor Cards Last chance to purchase Honor Cards! The Honor Card program is an annual campaign to raise awareness and funds to meet the needs of the homeless in Greensboro and throughout North Carolina. The Honor Cards may be purchased for a minimum donation of $5.00 each and will be available today in the Narthex and FLC Lobby after Sunday services, or you may obtain them by contacting Donna Cleveland, All proceeds from sale of cards goes directly to Greensboro Urban Ministry. The Choir Needs You! - If you can sing or play an instrument and would be willing to participate in our regular programming OR if you are busy but would be willing to take part in special services or presentations, please contact Tim Sessoms at tim.sessoms@oakridgeumc.org. Once a Month Volunteer Opportunity! - Have you been wondering how you can serve ORUMC in a limited capacity? Are you looking for an opportunity to meet people at church? If so, please consider volunteering your time one Sunday morning per month (at most) by setting up the Cafe for Fellowship Time (coffee and breakfast snacks served in the Cafe before and after the 9am Crosswalk Service). This can easily be accomplished by one person, but the tasks can also be shared with a good friend or family member. 7 Connection Carnival - ORUMC is having a Connection Carnival on Sunday, January 13 at 10:00am in the FLC. Our church is full of opportunities to serve and connect, and we re going to be highlighting these opportunities during the carnival. We will have one joint Discipleship time in the FLC for adults and youth followed by a time to learn about ways everyone can get connected in our church family. 10 Mission of the Month: ORUMC 2018 Africa University Scholarship Fund 2018 marks the 13 th year for the ORUMC sponsored Africa University Scholarship Fund begun Christmas Eve Present scholarship recipient, (Levy) Tshota Kayembe, is the seventh student to receive the scholarship. Levy, was orphaned in a past civil war in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) when his parents fled their home. This is a common story of many orphans in DRC. Levy eventually found Kasungami, DRC where Isaiah discovered him and arranged for a family from Nazareth United Methodist Church (UMC) to take guardianship of him. Isaiah enrolled Levy in the CAI education program from which he graduated before attending Africa University. Levy is now 24 years old, a Christian and member of Nazareth UMC in Kasungami, DRC. In a recent Levy stated he is thankful for the ORUMC scholarship and the opportunity to study at Africa University (A.U.). Levy s country language is French and native dialect is Swahili. Consequently his first class at A.U. was intensive English, a required course for all new incoming students. His favorite subject is Sociology. He attends the campus church every Sunday and Bible study during the week. He is working hard. The ORUMC Africa University Scholarship Fund was created when we saw a need during a medical and drinking water mission assignment at Old Mutare Mission Centre, Zimbabwe in During that project we boarded at nearby A.U. and were fortunate to interact with students. We learned the majority of students depended on scholarships to attend A.U. Upon our return home from Zimbabwe we met with then ORUMC pastor Rev. Dr. John Franklin Howard who sanctioned the creation of the A.U. Scholarship Fund. (Isaiah) Esaie Njimbu Chot was the first scholarship recipient who needed financial support to complete his final year at A.U. Following graduation in June, 2006, Isaiah returned to DRC and founded Child Action Initiative to educate orphans. Current tuition, room, board and travel expenses to and from A.U. are $6,500 for one year. Let us give thanks for our many blessings and open our hearts to give the gift of a future to Levy as we look forward to the birth of Jesus. 2 Corinthians 9:7 & 8: Each of you has made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
