5 Sermon Notes This week will be different because my take home from Sunday is Announcements Fellowship Time - You are invited to our fellowship time that is held between worship services. This is a time to visit with friends and meet new ones! We'll have the coffee pot on and some breakfast goodies available in the Café from 8:30 8:55am and from 10:00 10:30am. We will also have coffee in the Fellowship Hall immediately following the 8:15 worship service. Wherever you head for fellowship time, we welcome you and encourage you to come! NW Church Basketball League - Registration is open now through October 31 for a new season. Youth (MS Boys, HS Boys and HS Girls) can sign up on the website. Practice will begin in late November with the league games beginning in January. The cost is $60 per player this includes a 10 game schedule and playoff games. Contact Mike Kiernan or Mark Shina with any questions. Feed & Seed - Join us Wednesday, October 17 from 5:30-6:30pm in the FLC. This week s menu will be Chicken Souvlaki/Tzatziki/ Greek Salad/ Pasta Salad/ Hummus/ Pita Bread/Green Beans/Rice. The cost is $5 per person (family maximum of $20). Additional donations are always welcome! Reservations and/or cancellations are required by 4:30pm each Monday. We are looking for volunteers for prepping the ingredients on Friday, November 9; cooking the stew, filling the containers, and helping to sell the stew on Saturday, November 10. Contact Robin Covington at rdscovington@aol.com to volunteer. The stew project is the only fundraiser that supports the UMM Scholarship fund. Shoebox Ministry Boxes, labels and more information are now available in the lobbies. Please consider packing a shoebox with items for a child who would not have a Christmas if it weren t for you. Two-Part Fall Prevention Class - Oak Ridge First Baptist Church Nursing Ministry invites your congregation to a Two-Part Fall Prevention Class for Seniors, Caregivers and Families. 8 Mission of the Month: Child Action Initiative (CAI) We re going to Africa! Pastor Christi had it on her heart to go to Africa and talked to Max Kern who wanted to return to Africa for some time. He wondered if CAI had a need for a building team. We contacted Isaiah who told us he had building plans for a Children's Home which he ed to us. It's a God thing! Max Kern and Pastor Christi will be leading a team to Kasungami to build the Children's Home. The estimated cost of the trip is $ each. Please prayerfully consider traveling with Max and Pastor Christi to the DRC to build the Children's Home. Tentative dates are approximately the last week in June through the first week in July, Isaiah Njimbu Chot, founder and executive director of CAI and also the first recipient of the ORUMC Africa University Scholarship Fund, is working with Max to finalize plans for the trip to Kasungami, DRC. We will need to raise approximately $30, for building materials for construction of the Children's Home. CAI currently has 100 children in school from first to twelfth grade and students that aged out of school are enrolled in vocational education. Some of the young men graduates are working in masonry, carpentry and as machinists. A few young women have started a sewing shop and others are learning to knit, sew and crochet. High school graduate students are able to find jobs. Levy Tshota Kayembe graduated from the CAI education program and is attending Africa University. If you join the building team you will meet him as he will be helping to build the Children's Home. Although CAI's main focus is educating children, families have benefited from other programs that Isaiah has instituted with the assistance of the United Methodist Committee on Relief: Sustainable Agriculture and Development program to improve farming methods and increase crop output and variety; more and nutritious food, storing and use of stored foods; raising chickens and other fowl. Yvette, Isaiah's wife, teaches micro-business to women. A small amount of money invested in cloth, yarn, etc., enables women to make items to sell and help them become self-sufficient. We pray that you will be led to join Max and Pastor Christi's team traveling to Kasungami, DRC, to build the Children's Home and/or to make a tax deductible donation for the purchase of building materials.
