The heart of a father is the masterpiece of nature. - Antoine Francois Prevost June 2018 Monthly Newsletter of Oak Ridge United Methodist Church A Note from the Pastor When asked what is the great commandment of the Law of Moses, Jesus replied: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and foremost commandment. The second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself (Mt. 22:37-39). A few weeks ago, our church family loved our neighbors with acts of love and service on Change the World Day. The great news is our church family regularly loves our neighbors, both near and far, through various mission projects year-round. I love that about our church and look forward to deepening, strengthening and expanding the many ways we love others in the weeks and years to come. Likewise, I look forward to strengthening our call to love the Lord our God with our mind! Discipleship is at its core learning all we can about the life and teachings of our Lord Jesus and then applying it in our lives. However, there are times when we find it hard to understand various scripture passages. If we don t understand it then it s hard to apply. That is why we come together to study God s word; we learn best by reading and studying the Bible with others. In July, we will come together as a whole church to read and study a portion of scripture together. We ll be taking a deeper look at the story of Jonah: his call, his response, and the bewildering results. Jonah is not boring! It is fascinating, challenging, weird, and complicated; but it is also strikingly applicable for our lives today. Throughout July, we ll be focusing on Jonah during worship and in our discipleship hour. (children youth adults). For our Adults, we will provide devotion and bible study materials which can be used individually or by small groups. Stayed tuned for more information on JONAH in JULY. Joyfully, Pastor Susan

Mission of the Month Group Home/UMAR Once a month, a group of us from church go to the Bowden Home on Muirs Chapel Road. The Bowden Home is an UMAR home for special needs female adults. We do crafts, sing songs and pray with six beautiful ladies. I want to thank Pastor Christi for getting the crafts organized for the ladies. They really enjoy the crafts. We have fun singing songs together, and a couple of the special needs ladies take turns praying at the end of our visit. What amazing prayers! It is so wonderful to spend time with these ladies! They look forward to each of our visits. And we love being with them! I really did not have much contact with special needs adults until I was at Oak Ridge UMC. It is such a special ministry, and I feel so blessed to be a part of it. Going to the Group Home lets us personally get to know the ladies that live in an UMAR home. We truly see the presence of God and our faith is stronger because of knowing them. Also, many of us in the group go to Camp Grace at Camp Tekoa in Hendersonville, North Carolina, either in August or September, for a weekend with special needs adults. I often describe it as seeing a bit of heaven on earth. Here is some information about UMAR that many of you may not know. UMAR is an organization that was founded in 1983 by the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church. It is a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting community inclusion, independence and growth for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities through residential, vocational and cultural enrichment opportunities. There are 24 group homes in North Carolina, and two of them are in Greensboro the Bowden Home for women and the Westridge Home for men. There are nine apartments and three art centers. One of the art centers is located in Reidsville. Some of the services that UMAR provides is helping the special needs adults find jobs that meet the needs, abilities and choices of the individual, giving resume and job application assistance, and training for interviews. Below is a website where you can learn more about UMAR. There is also a video that I hope that you will take the time to watch. A lady talks about being at one of the art centers and experiencing the interaction of a special needs adult, Danny, with another special needs adult. It is very powerful and this lady giving the talk definitely feels the presence of God. I feel that the Group Home/UMAR is a wonderful ministry and our group would appreciate your support. It truly helps the special needs adults live a meaningful life, find joy in being with others, and be able to give to others. Lynne Toth

Do You have Zombie Stamps? Cancelled stamps can have a second life! Yes, cancelled stamps can have a second life! Our church has been sending stamps to the Alliance Stamp Ministry in Fort Myers, Florida since Used stamps are sold in bulk to stamp distributors, who then check and sort them to sell to collectors. The money collected by the Alliance Stamp Ministry is used to provide Sunday School materials in Spanish. The stamps need to have a ½ inch border around the entire stamp. It is easiest to just cut the whole envelope 1 from the left-hand side of the stamp and we will cut the rest of the sides correctly. It s also best to take whatever is in envelope out from the left side of the envelope to make sure that there is a wide enough border around the entire stamp. The photo shows you where to cut the envelope. Cut here to remove contents -> Cut entire envelope ^ here, through the front AND back, at least one inch from the stamp. Pastor Andy and Pastor Christi made a wonderful video about the stamp ministry and you can view it. Go to the Oak Ridge UMC website and click on the letter f (ORUMC Facebook page) in the right-hand corner and then click on videos and look for the one about the Stamp Ministry. Submitted by Lynne Toth Cancelled stamps are spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ!! On behalf of Child action Initiative, Isaiah Njimbu Chot and Sydney Wentz, we thank you for supporting Shoes & Socks for Isaiah s Kids. Our goal was $ and ORUMC congregation, our family and friends and people we don t know responded with donations. The total amount received is $ which enables Isaiah to purchase shoes & socks for 100 children, provide food for lunches packed by village women and required vaccinations in Kasungami, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Thank you for changing the world for these students. Blessings, Bev & Ed Wentz Co-Chairs, Child Action Initiative Note: By the economic measure of Gross National Product (GNP) defined as the total goods and services produced by any country, DRC is among the ten poorest countries of the world.

Nurses Notes Prevention Research funded by the Melanoma Research Alliance and others continues to advance our understanding of the causes of melanoma, and how genetics may play a role. What we do know is that exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light is the major environmental contributor to melanoma. Exposure to damaging UV rays from the sun and tanning devices is the most preventable risk factor for all skin cancers, including melanoma. Tips to Reduce Your Risk for Melanoma: Wear Sunscreen. Make sunscreen a daily habit. UV radiation can still damage skin even in the winter and on cloudy days. Use broad-spectrum sunscreen (protects against UVA and UVB rays) with SPF of at least 30. Wear Protective Clothing. Protect your body with sun-protective clothing, hat, and sunglasses. Avoid Peak Rays. Seek shade during the mid-day sun, when the sun s rays are most intense. Don t Use Tanning Beds. Indoor tanning has been shown to increase the risk of melanoma by up to 75%. Melanoma is one of the top three cancers diagnosed in young adults (ages 25-29), and scientists attribute this trend to the use of tanning beds among this age group, particularly young women. Protect Children. Just one bad sunburn in childhood or adolescence doubles your child s chances Melanoma Risk Factors: of developing melanoma later in life. People with the following traits are at higher risk for developing melanoma and other skin cancers: Fair skin Red or blonde hair Light eyes More than 50 moles History of sunburn or UV exposure Family history of skin cancer Personal history of skin cancer. If you have any of these traits, be sure you know your skin early detection is key! May is Melanoma Prevention Month Submitted by: Jerry B. Chance, Congregational Nurse

Sharing and Giving June Food Collections Backpack Ministry Fruit (15 oz. can) or Mixed Vegetables (15 oz. can) Good Samaritan Food Pantry Oatmeal Please place donations in the Donation Center located near the church office. Thank you for your support. Feed and Seed In December 2017, a small group of folks began praying and brainstorming about having a simple Wednesday night meal at ORUMC to build community through fellowship and to have opportunities for whole family ministries. On January 24th, our first weekly meal was served and the Feed & Seed Ministry was born! To date, this ministry has provided 19 hot and delicious weekly meals for our congregation, with an average weekly attendance of 97...wow! Even greater than that, Feed & Seed has fostered an environment of intergenerational fellowship which has resulted in many new friendships, has welcomed first-time Sunday morning worship guests to get to know our congregation in a laid-back setting, and has built community within the body of Christ at ORUMC! Praise be to God! Feed & Seed Fellowship Meals will continue throughout the summer on a MONTHLY basis. For the month of June, we will gather on Wednesday, June 27th beginning at 5:30pm for a delicious catered meal. Reservation cards and the online signup will be available closer to that date. In the meantime, please contact Kim Jackson at kjacksonathome@gmail.com if you are interested in helping with this ministry in ANY way (set-up crew, clean-up crew, welcome/registration, hostess, dessert provider, table decorator, financial contributor, money counter, etc). We will need plenty of hands as we kick off our weekly meals again this Fall! Many thanks to all of you who helped make Feed & Seed a success this year! Realm is coming! Our church is moving to a new kind of church record keeping solution called Realm. It primarily serves the administrative needs of our staff, but it also offers some exciting opportunities to support the way you are involved in our church. Not only will this improve work life for our ministry staff, it will make it easier for our church family to connect with each other, keep up with what s going on, and grow as a connected community of believers. Once implemented, this solution will save the church money every month. More information will be circulated later in the summer.

It is an exciting time at Oak Ridge Weekday School as we celebrate our 50 year Anniversary. So many lives have been impacted by this ministry over the past 50 years and we give thanks to God for the work He does every day in the lives of our little ones. We are also celebrating our Preschool graduates in early June and gearing up for our school age summer camp. We have a few openings in our summer camp for the following weeks June 18 th and 25 th, and July 16 th and 23 rd. If you are interested in sending your child for any of these weeks please call the Weekday School We recently completed our Star Rated license reassessment. Every three years the state reassesses our program based on staff education, and program standards. We have received our scores and scored well again this year. The teachers worked hard to prepare their classrooms for the assessment and we are so proud of all of them. We are waiting for our State Licensing Consultant to come out and give us our official results but we should remain a five star center which is the highest rating for licensed child care centers in the state of North Carolina. We are also looking for a part-time older infant room teacher from 2pm-6pm. If you or someone you know is looking for a part-time position loving on our littlest ones, please send them our way. There are some online trainings and a few workshops required for this position as well as a background check. Please lift up our Weekday School staff in your daily prayers. They do a BIG job and make a greater impact than they ever will know. A teacher affects eternity. She can never tell where her influence stops. - Henry Adams In Christ, Jamie Hatchell DIrector
