You ll find out what s going on in our council and assembly and you will be able to take an active part by expressing your views and opinions on the issues. Grand Knights Comments During this Advent season, we prepare for the coming of Christ. I think about the family of Jesus. This family was God s plan but it required the faith of Mary and Joseph. They may not have understood God s plan, but they trusted in God and accepted God s calling. Let Mary and Joseph be a constant reminder to us that we also need to trust God s plan for us. As we roll into December, this is a time for families to gather together. Enjoy being with your loved ones. This is also a time of giving. There are plenty of people in need during this time. There are boxes for coats in the narthex of the church. Donate a coat if you no longer use it. Please pray for the less fortunate as well. I hope you can attend the Knights of Columbus Christmas party. I personally want to wish all my brother Knights a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Remember to keep Christ in Christmas. 3 DECEMBER 2018 Prayer to Mary Queen of the Knights Our Lady, Queen of the Knights, bless all the activities of our order. Keep us true to the pledge to extend the kingship of thy Divine Son on earth. Through Thine intercession, win for us the grace ever to exemplify in our public and private lives, the virtues, which should characterize those specially dedicated to the service of the heavenly court. Make us always aware that as your Knights we are constantly observed, our faith judged and our order appreciated. Accept O Mary, this renewed pledge of fealty and devotion of thy servants, the Knights of Columbus. Amen. KEEP CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS (TUES. 4th) The Knights are keeping Christ in Christmas. Everyone s help is needed for this worthwhile undertaking. In a time when all things religious are being discouraged and swept away, it s refreshing to know that the Knights of Columbus established the Keep Christ in Christmas campaign to remind people that Christmas is above all a Holy Day celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. To help deliver the Keep Christ in Christmas message, Order-wide, the Knights of Columbus annually on the first Tuesday in December begin the Christmas season with the Light Up For Christ celebration. The ceremonial lighting of a Nativity scene, Christmas tree, or Christmas display is just part of the celebration. Plan such a lighting ceremony and at precisely 7 p.m. December 6th, local time, throw the switch to Light Up For Christ. The Light Up For Christ celebration is a wonderful way to kick off the Christmas season to help spread the joyful tidings of Christmas. (See prayer on page 6) CHRISTMAS PARTY IN-LIEU OF MONTHLY MEETING (Thurs. 13th) Thursday Dec. 13th will be an OPEN MEETING starting at 7:00 p.m., dispensing with normal business, to have fun and merriment as Christmas approaches. This will be a joint Council/Assembly Christmas Party. Members, families, and friends are cordially invited to come mingle and eat (see main menu items pg-8). COME HAVE FUN! KNIGHTS CHOIR (Sat. 15th) The KofC choir sings monthly at the 6:00 p.m.vigil Mass. Practice is at 5:30 p.m. at the daily chapel. No Ladies Night Out this month. FIRST DEGREE EXEMPLIFICATION There will NOT BE a 1st Degree ceremony this month. The next scheduled 1st Degree exemplification will be Tuesday, January 15, 2017 with registration at 6:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Religious Education Building. Invite an eligible catholic gentleman, 18 years of age or older, to join the Knights of Columbus by completing an application for membership (Form 100). Applications must be submitted to the council for review and approval at our regular monthly meeting. CONTINUED ON PG6 PRAYER FOR THE SICK: KEEP IN PRAYER Fr. We ask that You restore Your servant to health again. Above all, grant us the grace to acknowledge Your holy will and know that whatsoever You do, You do for the love of us. Amen. Page 3

After all, YOU are a big part of our success! To put this in perspective, in the last 12 months, we have had many accomplishments and departures from some brother Knights, may they rest in peace. Our council continues to ensure that we provide the insight of our Principles and Values: Charity, Fraternity, Unity and Patriotism is nearly here, so let s take a step back and reflect on all our accomplishments we have achieved together as Knights. 5 DECEMBER 2018 CALENDAR Light Up For Christ Prayer Heavenly Father, We praise you for the light of creation; the sun, the moon and the stars of the night. We praise you for the light of Israel: the Law, the Prophets and the wisdom of the Scriptures. We praise you for Jesus Christ your Son, the true Light of the world, the Light which no darkness can overcome. He is Emmanuel, God-with-us, the Prince of Peace who saved the world from darkness and brought humanity into the peace of everlasting Light. We praise you for Mary, who held your Son in her loving arms, and who was given to us as a Mother at the foot of the Cross. She is the New Eve, leading all her children into the Light of Joy who is her Son, Jesus. We praise you for the gift of faith, given to us at Baptism, which enlightens our minds to know and accept the Gospel of Truth and Life. Lord, we ask that your blessing come down upon us and those of our family who cannot be with us today as we illumine this Christmas display. May the light that it gives fill our hearts with hope that you will free us from the darkness of sin, and deliver us into the light of your peace and happiness. May all who look at this Christmas display come to the knowledge and joy of salvation. Grant that we may always walk as sons and daughters of the light, keeping the flame of Truth alive in our hearts, until we join you and the heavenly host in the Kingdom of everlasting Light. We ask this through Christ our Lord, Amen. If the three wise men had said NO in their desire to follow the star, our Lord would not have received the gifts they brought. Two thousand years later, within our parish, the gifts are still being presented to Him! Page 5

6 DECEMBER 2018 FOURTH DEGREE NEWS There will not be a Fourth Degree meeting this month. KofC BLOOD DRIVE RESULTS The November blood drive on behalf of our council and Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish resulted in a total of 25 successful blood donations. The Coastal Bend Blood Center is always appreciative of the time and effort we put into making the blood drives a success and our sincere thanks go to all the donors. Whole blood donors are able to give every 56 days. Our next blood drive is scheduled for January 13, What a better way to start the New Year than contributing to saving lives! A. J. CESSAC MEMORIAL SHRIMP BOIL ENJOYED BY ALL! About fifty 45 (brother) Knights, spouses, widows of our departed brothers, Father Mark, and some parishioners appeared to have had a good time at our annual Shrimp Boil, held November 19 at the Parish Hall. Before the blessing, we paid tribute to our departed brother, A. J. Cessac ( ), recalling his presence and accomplishments in our parish, council, and amongst his many friends over the years of his life with us. He initiated this council event in 2003, it was named after him in 2006, and was predesignated as the A.J. Cessac Memorial Shrimp Boil in 2012, the year of his passing. His widow Joyce and two sons honored us with their presence. It has been an annual event of good Cajun food, fun, and fellowship. Brother Knights, spouses, widows and friends had a great time. Our thanks to the brother Knights who boiled, fried, cooked, set-up, etc. so that everybody would enjoy. While many commercial life insurance companies have gotten out of the long-term care business, the Knights of Columbus considers LTC a very important piece of the family protection puzzle. The Order has been actively offering our members this product for nearly 15 years without a premium increase on current policyholders. Members who wisely purchased an LTC plan from the Knights in 2000 are still paying the same premiums today. Even better, our LTC coverage is backed by the full strength of the Order, which remains rooted in our strong Catholic values. Talk about stability when it counts. If we have not spoken about your need for LTC coverage in your family portfolio, please take some time out of your schedule to meet with me. Remember, long-term care policies are underwritten based on your health, and you most likely will never be any healthier than you are today. The Knights of Columbus Insurance program operates solely for members and their families, relies on council-agent teamwork for its success, and provides the financial backbone for all of the Order s good works. 9 The physical body is so designed that all its faculties respond to protect and heal it when a part of it suffers injury. Likewise, the members of the spiritual body, the Church, congregate as a mother to enfold and protect another member whose life is ruptured with sin, with pain, or with grief. When one member suffers, all suffer. St. Paul reminds us. Women and men who have lived their life in Christ in the sacramental union of marriage, experience this rupture profoundly when their partner is physically separated from them in death. With that said, the Deceased Husbands Widows Ministry of OLMC was started by Mrs. Joyce Cassac and Barbara Strain in November The idea was to bring together the widows of OLMC on a quarterly basis for fellowship and comfort. November 2018 marks the first full year of the new ministry and the Knights of Columbus sponsor the event by cooking a breakfast or luncheon meal for all to partake. The ministry has grown from six attending at the first meeting to over 20 widows a year later. The Knights are called with providing for the widows and children as its founder Fr. Michael J. McGivney had envisioned. Please welcome our newest Knights!! Eddie Maldonado Gil Alvarez Page 9 In recognition of longterm dedication to the Order, after 25 years of continuous service (at the age of 70), or 50 years of continuous membership regardless of age, a m e m b e r m e r i t s t h e distinction of Honorary Life m e m b e r s h i p a n d i s exempt from the further Danny Jurica payment of dues, per capita charge and assessments. All priests and members of religious communities automatically receive Honorary Life membership. These dedicated Knights are an asset to their councils and should be treasured and respected.
