Your Brother in Christ, Matthew Perales Brother Knights: Thank you for providing breakfast for the teens and sponsors who attended the High School Youth Spectacular. Your kindness was much appreciated. Our High School religious education program (TGIF Teens Growing In Faith) is meeting in the hall each Sunday night from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. As of this writing we have 126 students registered for TGIF and a team of more than twenty adults and young adults working on the staff. Please pray for the success of this program. These young people are the future of our parish. I am pleased that several of our Brother Knights are members of the formation team! Do remember, as busy as we are, that it is important for every organization to coordinate or schedule facility use (hall, conference room, church) with Barbara in the parish office to avoid any last minute conflicts. We are sharing limited space so we must be considerate. Thanks for all you do for your parish and your priests. Fr. 3 OCTOBER 2015 Prayer to Mary Queen of the Knights Our Lady, Queen of the Knights, bless all the activities of our order. Keep us true to the pledge to extend the kingship of thy Divine Son on earth. Through Thine intercession, win for us the grace ever to exemplify in our public and private lives, the virtues, which should characterize those specially dedicated to the service of the heavenly court. Make us always aware that as your Knights we are constantly observed, our faith judged and our order appreciated. Accept O Mary, this renewed pledge of fealty and devotion of thy servants, the Knights of Columbus. Amen. Why is October the Month of the Rosary? October 7th is the memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary, sometimes referred to as the Feast of the Holy Rosary. The day was dedicated by St. Pius V who credited a victory over the invading Turks to the intercession of Mary through the rosary. Pope Benedict XVI described the image of Our Lady of the Rosary in a 2007 Angelus: The traditional image of Our Lady of the Rosary portrays Mary who with one arm supports the Child Jesus and with the other is offering the rosary beads to St Dominic. This important iconography shows that the Rosary is a means given by the Virgin to contemplate Jesus and, in meditating on his life, to love him and follow him ever more faithfully. It is this message that Our Lady has also bequeathed to us in her various apparitions. (Benedict XVI, Angelus, October 7, 2009) The Ba+le of Lepanto The victory at Lepanto is the most famous and important of the military victories through the Rosary. On October 7, 1571 the Turk's attempted to invade Christian Europe at Lepanto on the coast of Greece. The Pope asked Catholics to pray the Rosary with the intention that the Turk's attack would fail. The Christians were out numbered 3 to 1. As the Turks sailed across the sea, a sudden storm emerged and 200 Turkish ships and 50,000 of their men sank. Thanks to the Rosary prayers and against all odds, the Christians were victorious. Fourth Degree Chapeau. Only Fourth Degree Knights may optionally purchase the full regalia and join the Assembly s Color Corps. The Color Corps is the most visible arm of the Knights as they are often seen in parades and other local events wearing their colorful regalia. Official dress for the Color Corps is a black tuxedo, baldric, white gloves, cape and naval chapeau. Baldrics are worn from the right shoulder to left hip and are color specific by nation. In the United States, Panama and the Philippines, baldrics are red, white and blue. Red and white baldrics are used in Canada; red, white and green in Mexico; and blue and white in Guatamala. Service baldrics include a scabbard for a sword and are worn over the coat while social baldrics are worn under the coat. The colors on a Fourth Degree Knight's cape, and chapeau, denote the office he holds within the Degree. Faithful Navigators and Past Faithful Navigators are permitted to carry a white handled silver sword. Masters and Vice Supreme Masters, as well as Former Masters and Former Vice Supreme Masters, are also denoted by their gold swords. The need for a patriotic degree was first considered in 1886 and a special plea was made at the National Meeting of The first Fourth Degree exemplification followed in 1900 with 1,100 Knights participating at the Lenox Lyceum in New York City. Today there are more than 2,500 Assemblies. PRAYER FOR THE SICK: KEEP IN PRAYER Holy Mary of God, pray for Fr. Jerry Zurovetz St. Paul of the Cross, pray for Butch Rowe St. Mary Magdalene, pray for Joe Posas St. Joseph, pray for Olga Sutherland St. James, pray for Eusebio Munoz St. Peter, pray for Gilbert Hinojosa St. John, pray for Eric Peterson Dear Jesus, Devine Physician and Healer of the sick, we turn to You in this time of illness. We ask that You restore Your servant to health again. Above all, grant us the grace to acknowledge Your holy will and know that whatsoever You do, You do for the love of us. Amen. Page 3
