2 Mission of the Month: Good Samaritan Food Pantry 2 What is the mission of this ministry? The mission of the Good Samaritan Food Pantry is to hold non-perishable food supplies for distribution to Northwest Guilford families during times of crisis and temporary needs. Oak Ridge United Methodist Church, along with several other churches of various faiths in the Northwest area, contribute food items to the Good Samaritan Ministries' Food Pantry each month. The pantry gives away an average of boxes of food monthly. A box is packed with enough food to help feed a family of four for several days. Where is the pantry located? The food pantry is located in the Stokesdale Business Center, 8500 Ellisboro Road, downtown Stokesdale. The pantry is open on the last Saturday of each month from 9:00-11:00 am. How can I help? 1. Please contact Tracey Ring with any questions you may have about this ministry at tracey.ring@oakridgeumc.org or Welcome to Oak Ridge s Children s Ministry! Like Jesus, we cherish and love children. We also know childhood is a crucial time for faith development. We are excited to help you establish a faith foundation in your child's life. Please accept our warm invitation for your families to join us for exciting, fun and purposeful Christian activities throughout the year. This month our focus is love. How can we share Christ s love with one another? February is known as the month for love but as Christians we know that we are called to celebrate love all the time. In the book of John, Jesus says " I give you a new command: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another. (John 13:34) As followers of Christ, we are called to show our love not only with our words but more importantly with our deeds. As parents, this is an important concept to share with our children. An easy way to share this with our children is by modeling love through our actions. A great example of this can be seen in our partnership with Isaiah Njimbu Chot and Child Action Initiative. The Child Action Initiative program helps educate more than 100 children by providing shoes and socks so that they can attend school. It also provides food as well as tutoring and counseling to local women in the town of Kasungami, Democratic Republic of the Congo. In 2009, Isaiah visited 3 our church. During his brief visit he met a very young Sydney Wentz. From Isaiah, Sydney learned that kids who didn t have shoes or socks were not allowed to go to school. Without shoes the children often got ring worm and other infections from the cracks in their feet. From this brief encounter, Sydney decided that she wanted to raise money for shoes and socks for Isaiah s kids that was almost 8 years ago! To honor Christ s call that we love one another the Children's Ministry team is hosting a Mardi Gras pancake dinner to raise money for Isaiah's Kids. ORUMC families and friends of all ages are invited to enjoy a pancake dinner, Lenten crafts, Mardi Gras parade, photo booth, and dancing on Saturday, Feb. 25, from 5:00 to 7:00pm. Donations will be accepted and 100% of funds raised will be used to buy shoes and socks for Isaiah s kids. From this small sacrificial action of love, kids will have shoes and socks which means they can attend school and have healthy feet! No matter our age, we are all still learning and growing in our faith and need to be encouraged by one another. Be confident in your faith and know that Jesus knows what daily life is like because he lived it! We are so blessed and loved. I am very excited to worship and learn what it means to be all about our Fathers business with you here at Oak Ridge UMC. Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth. (1 John 3:18) Peace and courage as you continue your walk with Jesus. Tracey

5 5 God's Valentine Gift God's Valentine gift of love to us Was not a bunch of flowers; It wasn't candy, or a book To while away the hours. His gift was to become a man, So He could freely give His sacrificial love for us, So you and I could live. He gave us sweet salvation, and Instruction, good and true-- To love our friends and enemies And love our Savior, too. So as we give our Valentines, Let's thank our Lord and King; The reason we have love to give Is that He gave everything. By Joanna Fuchs There s an App for That! Can t find your church directory? 6 6 Ruth Linville Turns 100-Years Old! Ruth is a long-time member of ORUMC and the community. The following is an excerpt from an article in the Kernersville News on January 5, Happy Birthday Ruth! I Chronicles 16:24 Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples. Ruth Linville, who turned 100-years old on December 26 is known well in Kernersville as a great teacher and basketball coach, having taught at Kernersville School. Linville was born on December 26, 1916 in North Hampton County with 5 siblings on a farm. I was the middle child and I m the only one still living, she said. My mother was a teacher and my father was a farmer. After high school, Linville attended East Carolina University (ECU) where she played both basketball and tennis, and earned a teaching degree. After teaching for a few years she went back to get her master s degree over the summer, again at ECU. Linville noted that along with her mother, siblings and herself being teachers, her grandmother was a teacher and one of her granddaughters is a teacher. Linville shared that she taught in five different schools, always teaching high school. She came to Kernersville School in During her time teaching at Kernersville School, Linville shared that she taught science and coached girls basketball. While at Kernersville School, Linville said she met Edna Linville, her sister-in-law, who was an elementary school teacher. Through her, she met her late husband, Walter Linville. Linville noted that she and Walter were married in They had one son, Robert. She also gained several stepchildren from Walter s previous marriage. The last year for Kernersville High School was in Then it was East Forsyth High School, she said, noting that she transferred with the high school. I stayed there until I retired in 1977, after 37 years of teaching. After her husband passed away in 1978 and her son was in college, Linville began playing golf as a way to keep her mind occupied. When asked what she attributes her longevity to, Linville said she isn t quite sure; however, she noted that he mother lived to be 103. I guess I try not to let things bother me too much, she said. Thank You Note I would like to thank everyone for their condolences after the passing of my mother just before Christmas. I have tried to personally thank everyone, but there have been so many cards, calls, s, Facebook posts, handshakes, and hugs that I probably have missed some. Please know that every thought and prayer is greatly appreciated. Several church family members even made it to Thomasville for either visitation or the service. I am blessed to have such a loving church family. Sincerely, Bob Yarbrough 6

7 7 Guatemala Mission Trip Perspective Wrenn, John and Anna Kilmartin live in Sparta, NC, and served on the team to Guatemala, October This article was submitted by Wrenn. Perspective is an interesting thing. If you choose to look at life a certain way all the time then you will not change your perspective and, therefore, stay in pretty much the same patterns of life for years at a time. Life can become very predictable and routine. So, that s one reason God gives us teenagers. Our daughter Anna is the youngest of three. She has just turned sixteen and is one of wisest and most grounded people I ve ever known. Several months ago we learned that there was a mission trip coming up in October. We talked about it a little and I commented that someday I d love to be a part of a trip like this. The next thing I knew, we had decided to go. We began to think about raising money and all the other details that are involved when planning a trip like this. John agreed to be a part as well. This was a really big step for us as we d never been on an international trip and had no real idea of what it might be like. Anna never had a moment of doubt that it would all work itself out. We just had to put everything in God s hands (she kept saying) and know that He was handling it. So, that is what we did. There are so many small miracles that kept us going and lit the path. A team would be going to Guatemala to install stoves, provide water filtration systems, and give families dewormer pills and vitamins. The stoves would allow for families to heat and cook in their homes while the smoke could now be vented to the outside rather than staying in these small little spaces where it was causing lung damage (especially for the children). The filtration systems will now mean clean water for families. The simple things like this, that can often seem so ordinary, are changing the lives of the Guatemalan people in the small rural villages where we were. I Chronicles 16:24 Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples. We live in a community here in Alleghany county where we all look out for each other. I am truly thankful for this. The similarity that struck me in Guatemala was that each person within each village looks out for others as well. It was not at all uncommon to see a ten year old child with a (baby) brother or sister on their back. Families all came together to receive training on using their new stoves and water filtration systems. Some of them walked quite a long way and not once did I see anything other than happy faces. We had several opportunities to be a part of the daily lives of people living in the villages near us. The language barrier was great but a smile or child s laughter could bridge the gap easily. Our daughter spent several afternoons painting tiny fingernails and handing out crayons as we spent time playing with the children while parents attended training. After a couple of days, they knew her name and would run to her when they saw her. It s a rewarding experience as a parent to see your child taking part in something that can literally change the lives of these wonderful people and bring them better health and living conditions. I encourage anyone who has thought about mission work (whether locally or abroad) to pray about it and follow your path. We each left a part of our hearts with the beautiful people of Guatemala and look forward to seeing them again very soon! Thank you so very much to each of you who donated money to us and kept us in your prayers. Submitted by Max Kern Written by Wrenn Kilmartin 7

8 8 Guatemala Teams for October 2017 It is time to start thinking about the teams to Guatemala in October For three years now, we have served 300 Guatemalan families with our October teams. Those teams averaged around 20 on each of the two teams. In 2016, the 300 families were in three villages and, as usual, we provided concrete floors in their kitchens, stoves, water filters, de-wormer and multivitamins. This was the second year with the improved stoves and we finished with time to spare. An important aspect of the ministry is the distribution of donations of clothes, shoes, flip-flops, tooth brushes, tooth paste, etc. These items were gathered by team members as they reached out to their church families, friends and local businesses. We were able to give gifts to each of the 300 families and even had some items left over for the local pastors to distribute to the needy in their villages. John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. There are many benefits from the Guatemala Stove and Water Filter Ministry including better health, clean air, clean water, cost savings and a reduction in deforestation. We invested $90,000 in the 300 families. The organization that provides the stoves and water filters shared that the potential annual savings in wood, water and medicine for these families is $250,000. Please be a part of this amazing ministry. The dates for the mostly High Point University team are October and for the second team dates are October For more details and deadlines, please check the church website: oakridgeumc.org/servant-outreach/changing-lives-in-guatemala. As always, if you have questions or would like to discuss joining one of our teams, please contact me. 9 Nurses Notes Managing the Stress of Being a Sandwich Caregiver According to Pew Research Center, 47 percent of Americans are actively parenting children, teens or adults in the home while also caring for aging parents. This population is often referred to as the sandwich generation. Studies show that carrying this much responsibility can lead to feelings of stress as caregivers juggle the complex variety of daily tasks and relationships created by work as well as commitments to multiple family members. The responsibility can be overwhelming at times. Because of time constraints and strong emotions, caregivers may neglect to take care of themselves. Practice self-care. Care for your body and stay active. Make time for yourself. Find support: find a counselor, join a support group, take a class, make friends or deepen the relationships you have. Find others to help you help your loved ones - develop a support team. Focus on what matters. Caregivers get caught up in responding to day-to-day demands and forget what is most important. Learn to say no to the activities that are not priorities. Create a list of important activities and use it to help you choose how to spend your time. Realign your personal goals according to what matters to you. You may have to put some goals on hold or even eliminate them to address the demands of caregiving. Deal with the guilt. Guilt arises naturally in caregiving and it can be destructive. Reach out to caregiving organizations that offer education and support. Without a network of support, caregivers often become isolated, which can lead to depression and their own serious health issues. Caregivers may grieve for the life they led prior to caregiving. It is normal for caregivers to feel sadness, anger and resentment. As with guilt, seek support structures to help you with these feelings. To combat grief over losing the life you once had, empower yourself by controlling what you can to create a new life. Infuse ordinary events with meaning. Look for beauty and positive moments as you go through your day. When you encounter these moments, reflect on how it makes you feel. These will give you pause and can reduce stress. Allow yourself to laugh. The act of laughing releases endorphins, which are natural stress fighters and help relieve pain. Seek out humor and have a deep long laugh.
