1 Third Sunday of Advent December 16, 2018

2 Preparing for worship During preparation for One Starry Night, some Wilshire volunteers were working on the nativity puzzles provided as gifts for families from the community who came to our interactive Bethlehem village. Each puzzle had pieces depicting Mary, Joseph, a shepherd, the angel Gabriel and, of course, baby Jesus. As we were counting each piece to be sure we had complete sets, we realized we had lost a critical piece the baby Jesus. Without him, the puzzle was not complete. For many years, I had the opportunity to teach kindergarteners during the Sunday School hour. December Sundays were especially busy as we had many activities focusing on the coming of Jesus. We always had several nativity sets for the children the unbreakable kind with animals, Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus. During clean-up time on one particularly hectic Sunday, I was helping the children when we discovered that Jesus was missing from our nativity set. I found myself saying: Where is the baby Jesus? We ve lost baby Jesus. It s easy to misplace puzzle pieces or figurines in the excitement of preparing for Christmas. It s much more difficult when we find ourselves missing the mystery and wonder of Advent, the tangible presence of God with us in Jesus. How can our Advent theme of Rejoice! help us to recover the mystery and wonder we ve lost? Rejoicing does not always come naturally to us; our lives are crowded, and distractions are many. Rejoicing is difficult when life does not turn out as we planned, and we re dealing with losses, illnesses, broken relationships and difficult situations. Rejoicing just doesn t seem possible when we look around us and feel that everyone else is experiencing the perfect life with all of the puzzle pieces in place, and we re frantically looking everywhere for the missing baby Jesus. The good news of Advent is that Jesus isn t missing or absent from our lives even when rejoicing is difficult. Maybe, if we can make ourselves slow down, be attentive in the moment, listen to the music and reflect on God s gift for us in the coming of Jesus, we might be surprised at what we discover. Isn t that what our time of worship helps us to do? May we realize that God s great love helps us to put the pieces of our lives together, and that alone is a reason to rejoice. Amen. Thou only, O Jesus Christ, with the Holy Ghost, Art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen. +Gospel Reading Luke 2:8 14 Jane Ballard / Casey Boland In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, Do not be afraid; for see I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors! This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Prayers of the People Mark Wingfield +Hymn 139 Infant Holy, Infant Lowly w zlobie lezy 5

6 Giving of Tithes and Offerings Your generous gifts make Wilshire s ministry possible. Without your giving, there would be no lights, no sound, no instruments, no staff, no heating and air conditioning, no literature, no coffee, no missions programs, no education programs, no pastoral care. Everything we do is made possible by your generous gifts. As year-end approaches, have you given as generously as you intended for the year? Are you contributing to our shared missions and ministries as an act of worship? Now s the time to make a difference. This, this is Christ the King, whom shepherds guard and angels sing; Haste, haste to bring him laud, the babe, the son of Mary. 8 Meet today s worship leaders Jane Ballard and her husband, Kyle, joined Wilshire in They are the parents of Benjamin, 5, Ann Marie, 3, and Eleanor, who was born in August. Jane and Kyle attend Genesis Class, and she serves on the Weekday Education Committee. Casey Boland came to Wilshire in 2002 and has been involved as a missions volunteer and Stephen Minister. She teaches at Lake Highlands High School, where she was Richardson ISD s 2018 secondary STAR teacher of the year for excellence in education. About this morning s music Gloria sung by our Sanctuary Choir today was written by Texas composer Randol Alan Bass. This piece was written for the New York Pops Orchestra in 1990 and premiered at Carnegie Hall in 1990 under the direction of Skitch Henderson. It is a rhythmic, yet lyrical, setting of the liturgical Latin text. Born in Fort Worth, Bass was raised in Midland, where he studied piano, worked in community theater, played various instruments and sang with local ensembles, including the Midland-Odessa Symphony. He earned a bachelor s degree in 1976 from the University of Texas at Austin, a master of music degree in choral conducting in 1980 from the College- Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati and pursued doctoral studies in choral and wind conducting at both Ohio State University s Robert Shaw Institute and UT-Austin. He has written for and performed with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, among many professional companies. He founded the Austin Symphonic Band in 1982 and was its music director and conductor for three years. He is music director emeritus of the Metropolitan Winds in Dallas. Rejoice!, also sung by our choir today, was written by Gwenyth Walker, a graduate of Brown University and the Hartt School of Music and a former faculty member of the Oberlin College Conservatory. The piece was commissioned to celebrate a couple s 35th wedding anniversary. It was premiered by the Luther College choirs and orchestra. Rejoice! is a trio of new musical settings of traditional Christmas carols or poems. The intent is to explore the dramatic character of each song: What Child is This?, Love Came Down at Christmas and Good Christian Friends Rejoice! One note for the astute listener: the composer, a resident of a family-owned dairy farm, often inserts cows into the lyrics of her songs. Rejoice! was composed during the summer of 2001 at the composer s studio on the Brainstorm Dairy Farm in Braintree, Vt. 8

12 Observations from the border By Heather Mustain Minister of Missions and Advocacy Civic Engagement Chair for Faith Forward Thanks-giving Square On the first Sunday of Advent, as we lit the candle of hope and sang hymns such as Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus, I fought back tears as I recalled recent stories that had been entrusted to me. Stories of suffering and heartbreak, stories of refugees fleeing life-threatening violence, voiced by men and women from all over the world. The week before, I traveled to the Mexico/U.S. border with a group from Wilshire. Our purpose was to observe and understand for ourselves what is occurring in both our federal courts and ports of entry as it relates to the mass migration of peoples. As we crossed the U.S. border into Matamoros, we noticed a small camp set up on the other side of the road. There we found two dozen folks waiting to have the chance to legally claim asylum. The group included women and men from Cameroon, Central America and Russia; they were young and old. Many had been waiting at our border for at least a month and had traveled through Central America and Mexico for at least another two. That morning I spoke with a woman from Cameroon named Janet. Janet fled Cameroon due to political unrest and is certain that if she stayed, due to her affiliation, she would have been murdered. Looking for refuge from bordering countries, she found her way through the Western horn of Africa. When safety wasn t found, she boarded a flight to Ecuador. Once in Ecuador, she spent the next three months traveling north to a land she described as having the best human rights the United States of America. As she shared her journey with me, tears fell down her cheeks. She was robbed along the way, beaten, spent time in jail, raped, yet fueled by hope to reach the border of America, where she believed she would have the chance to declare asylum. Throughout her story she referenced God, and so when I lost all words I asked if she liked to sing. Through her tears, she looked up and said yes. Hand in hand, we stood facing one another, harmonizing our voices to a common worship 12 song sung in many countries I have visited in Africa. Through song we declared what my heart and my mouth couldn t: that God is worthy, faithful and deserves all praise. Afterward, I took her head in my hands and gently whispered over her: May the Lord bless you and keep you; may the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; may the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace. Amen. It was one of the holiest and most painful moments in my ministry. As we got ready to leave, I gave her a pack of tissues I had in my backpack, a bottle of water and a granola bar. I told her I d share her story and learn more about what is happening in Cameroon. She asked if I would inform our government of what is happening in her country so that they would feel compelled to help. We hugged, and I left her waiting. She s been told her number will soon be called; this will give her the chance to share her story, and I pray she at least will have a chance for asylum. Later, as I crossed the bridge to the U.S., passport in hand, I saw her singing through the fence accompanied by the freshly hung barbed wire. I called out her name, smiled and waved, and she returned my gesture. And in that moment, I realized how lives can be so drastically different based on the ZIP Code or country in which one is born and how unjust that really is. After just a few days of interacting with the complicated and complex immigration system, I felt angry and my heart filled with despair and hopelessness. How do you begin to reform a system that in all honesty is functioning properly but lacks all human empathy and compassion? The answer came from the words of Fred Rogers: Look for the helpers. After all, if a woman like Janet, who has survived such abuse and trauma, can remain hopeful, then who am I to feel such hopelessness? That day Janet reinforced what I already knew to be true. Hopelessness is not the answer; we need to fulfill the hope she and thousands of others carry, by being informed advocates and by being the helper others look for in times of darkness. During this season of Advent, as we search for hope, may we not forget the call from above to also be the fulfillers of hope.

13 Gifts given during this holiday season Thanksgiving meals delivered: Two of our mission partners received hot meals delivered this Thanksgiving season because of your generosity and initiative. Those ministries included Genesis Women s Shelter and Gateway of Grace. Thanksgiving bags and baskets: With the help of many Sunday School classes, we delivered 88 Thanksgiving baskets to families through the Wilkinson Center (this is 20 more than when we started just a few years ago) and collected more than 100 bags of groceries for White Rock Center of Hope. Cookie delivery: Foundations of Faith Class made, iced and delivered 250 Christmas cookies to Austin Street Center. Warm coat collection: Discovery Class collected 52 children s winter coats that were donated to Genesis Women s Shelter. 10 volunteers served lunch on Thanksgiving Day at Cornerstone Baptist Church s kitchen in South Dallas. This weekend we had five serving at the Wilkinson Center s Christmas Store. 20 volunteers are signed up to serve dinner to the homeless and working poor at Cornerstone Baptist Church on Christmas Eve. Three women traveled to Lockhart Prison last Friday to participate in the women s edition of Prison Entrepreneurship Program. Staff contacts George A.
