The Tidings October 2014 A newsletter of Central Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity THRIVE THROUGH FIVE! Council has been busy this summer reviewing our goals and we feel energized by the affirmation that our five focus areas are still vibrant and vital to our work at Central. As we transition from the glorious warm days of summer and ease into the cool days of autumn, we look forward to our October Stewardship Campaign. Our theme this year is to Thrive Through Five, to continue to grow and strengthen in: * Developing a Broad Leadership Base * Outreach to and Visibility in our Community * Building Community Within * Worship and Music * Maintaining Central s Social Justice Focus We have had some great discussions during our meetings and a recurring question is how do we move ourselves toward the difficult discussions and embrace a radical and transformative ministry here at Central and in the greater world. We think the building blocks are found in our five goals. In the coming weeks and months we will be reaching out to the congregation to help with this vision and we hope to hear your thoughts and ideas. Please save the date, October 19 th, for our annual Stewardship Potluck after church when we will review the challenges of this year and look forward to how we can grow in the coming year. How does coming to church on Sunday feed our spirits and how do we share that feeling with others? Please see the Stewardship & Finance Committee article on page 3 for the link to our pledge survey. We would ask that everyone complete the on-line and paper pledges by October 26 th. We hope you can join us as we kick things off on October 5 th. Respectfully submitted by: Chris Kealy and Erica Hieggelke Congregational Co-Presidents

October 2014/ Page 3 News from Church Council Dear members and friends of Central Lutheran: THRIVE THROUGH FIVE! Our congregation has much to celebrate! Over the last few years, several significant bequests have allowed us to take risks, expanding our staff and enhancing our programs. We have been talking this past year about our five priorities (maintaining our social justice focus; building community within; worship and music; developing a broad leadership base; and outreach to and visibility in the community). Focused on those priorities, we have advocated on issues such as marriage equality, a living wage for all, and reducing gun violence. We have dramatically improved our education programs, including through the Godly Play curriculum. We have sent a group to Mexico to share God s love with and learn from our brothers and sisters there. We are seeing the effects of this work and we see even greater opportunities. In the next year or so, the light rail station and the new streetcar will make it easier to get to Central and our immediate neighborhood is in the midst of a continuing housing boom that will bring many more residents to Capitol Hill. We also know that although our offerings have grown substantially over the last few years, we have not met our goals for supporting our expanded staff and programs with our regular offerings. We face a decision about whether to retrench and survive, or to stretch and thrive though working on our five priorities: Thrive through Five. During the month of October, we invite you to consider how you can support the ministry of Central and our vision of a thriving community. We are convinced that through working on our priorities, we will thrive and help our community to thrive. On Sunday, October 19, we invite you to attend a congregational potluck where we will talk about the opportunities and challenges that we face in the year to come and how you can help address them. Here is a link to a survey that you can easily fill out to make your financial pledge for next year: Please consider what will work for you and your family; what role Central is being called to play in this time and place; and how God is calling you to respond. We would appreciate a response by Pledge Sunday, October 26. Your pledges are critical to the process of developing the congregation s budget for Respectfully yours, Stewardship and Finance Committee - Chris Kealy, Cori Myka, Kari Oversvee-Choi, Jamie Pedersen, Pastor Cindy Salo, and Kevin Urdahl

October 2014/ Page 8 News from CIM Time and Talent But David already knows what I do It s true, I ve been at Central for almost 3 years and I know a lot more than when I first started! And one might be tempted to just assume that I know what you and your family are passionate about and will plug you in at the appropriate time. However since I turn 30 this month, I m starting to need extra reminders since I m getting SOOOOOO OLD! ;) But seriously, it would be helpful if everyone at Central took time to do the following: Remind themselves of the many MINISTRY opportunities we have at Central to keep this a vibrant and functioning COMMUNITY. (Many hands make light the work!) RENEW your commitment by checking all the MINISTRIES you re currently involved in. This lets me know that you re still passionate around where you help! CONSIDER NEW areas that you might feel a sense of call to and check those as well. You can always put a QUESTION MARK by something you might consider if you re not comfortable with a full on check mark! You ll find Time & Talent sheets in the Parish Hall and in the back of the Church. You can fill it out throughout the month of October and/or place it in the offering plate on Pledge Sunday, October 26 th. Blessings, David De Block Coordinator of Intergenerational Ministries Outreach, Faith Development, and Volunteer Coordinating That s what I do!

October 2014/ Page 11 Central s Theology Book Club Our next Theology Book Group Gathering will be Thursday, October 23 at 6:30 pm in the Upstairs Fireside Room in the Parish Hall at Central Lutheran. Discussion will start at 7 pm. Bring a sack supper and/or snacks to share at 6:30 pm. This is an informal opportunity to build community with other Central folks through discussion of a theological book and how it relates to our faith and lives - both personally and in community. We hope to engage in intentional theological reflection and dialogue, discerning anew our role as people of faith in community. We want to hear your thoughts voiced! Contact Bjorn Payne, Andrea Langeland, and Theresa Wagner for more information. Thursday, October 23rd - Mary Lou Maag will lead us in viewing and discussing portions of the film "The Last Western Heretic". Filmed in New Zealand and Israel and premiered at the NZ Parliament, The Last Western Heretic explores Lloyd Geering's worldview through a discussion of his ideas: there is no life after death, the Bible is not infallible, Jesus was not divine, among others. Includes live footage from his 1967 heresy trial on charges of "doctrinal error and disturbing the peace of the [Presbyterian] church" which resulted from Geering's assertion that the resurrection of Jesus should not be interpreted literally. As aired on NZ television, this documentary is now available in North America from Westar Institute. Special Thanks The staff at Central would like to thank everyone who was involved in Staff Appreciation Sunday! We appreciate you, too!
October 2014/ Page 12 Faith in Action A SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM OPEN DOOR MINISTRIES: What Can You Donate to the Open Door Ministries Auction? Open Door Ministries is hard at work on our annual Fall Gala and Auction (November 8), the major source of funding for ODM s work throughout the year with gay and lesbian issues. We are in need of items for the auction. Are there folks who might have something to donate? Or is there someone who would like to solicit items? Ideas for donations include: Tickets for sports, theater, ballet or other events after November 8. A time share. Services from a favorite provider: massage, yard work, house cleaning, etc. A business who might sponsor the auction in exchange for advertising in the auction program. A favorite activity for whom the provider might donate a beach or mountain home, spa treatment, wine tasting tour, etc. Perhaps a group or individual in your congregation would contribute a theme basket. Open Door Ministries, a ministry of NW Washington Synod of ELCA, works closely with RIC churches, sharing in the work you do extending God s inclusive love. We appreciate your support. If you can assist us in providing a tax deductible item for the auction, please contact Jill Bossen, Auction Chair, at or odmauction@gmail.com. Time is of the essence. Thank you for your assistance.
October 2014/ Page 13 Faith in A ction Please join me for... Dear Centralites: Central Lutheran Phone Bank for Initiative 594 Universal Background Checks Every Sunday through November 2 from 2:30-5:30 pm Please bring a laptop and cell phone (We have just a few spares of each to loan) Please, please join me on Sundays for a session of do-goodery at the Central Lutheran Phone Bank for Yes on I-594. Our congregation is an official endorser of I-594, so let s put our volunteerism where our endorsement is. Why I Care about I-594; Why You Should Care Cornell s Valley Pharmacy was open on Saturdays, but Saturdays were quiet: the doctors offices were closed and the parking lot was empty. That made Saturday the best day for Bad Guys to hold up my dad at gun point and take all the money and narcotics they could get their hands on. This happened many times. I was working with Dad one Saturday, when two guys with nylon stockings over their heads burst into the pharmacy, pointed a gun at me, and told me to lay down on the floor. I watched while the Bad Guys held a gun to Dad s head as he emptied the till and the pill cabinets. The whole event probably took no more than 4 minutes; it felt like days. When the police later asked me the diameter of the Bad Guys gun, I told them 2 inches. It looks that big when it s pointed at your dad s head. My family s experience with gun violence is nothing compared to the heart-breaking stories we hear every week. Gun violence affects everyone...how has it affected you? This November Washington voters have the opportunity to reduce the risk of gun violence through universal background checks for all gun sales by voting Yes on I-594. Moreover, a strong yes vote will have additional benefits: it will demonstrate that the gun lobby does not own us, provide courage to many otherwise upstanding legislators who have previously been afraid to stand up to the gun lobby, and encourage other states to move forward on universal background checks. 79 percent of Washington voters support universal background checks, which is great but doesn t matter one bit if those voters don t vote. Only one in three Washingtonians voted in the August primaries! But the gun lobby will ensure that 99 percent of its voters turn in ballots in November. We have got to make sure that our voters turn in ballots come November and the most effective way to do that is through phone banks. Yours, Cheri Cornell, Central member

October 2014/ Page 16 Save the Date! The Volunteer Recognition Dinner and beginning of the 30 th Year Anniversary of Community Lunch is scheduled for Sunday, October 26 th at 5 pm at All Pilgrims Church. Great things are in the works for this very special event where all volunteers and donors will be honored. I hope to see you there as we kick-off the 30 th year celebration. At the urging of Pastor Cindy, Community Lunch organized a drug impact seminar on August 26 th for those on the front lines of providing food services to the homeless community to learn about behaviors and the impact of drugs and alcohol on those we serve. Presenters were Ron Jackson of Evergreen Treatment Center and Kelly Craig from REACH. We invited both meal programs and food banks from throughout the region and it was very successful, with more than 60 people attending. A BIG Thank-You to Central Volunteers who have jumped in to help prepare and serve lunches on Tuesdays and Fridays during August and September, especially Lynn and Rachel Rauch. With the end of summer and the beginning of school, our volunteers and students have dwindled. The tireless support from the volunteers has made a huge difference to those hungry individuals in our community. Don t forget that Central Lutheran Church is volunteering at Community Lunch in December. We will need lots of help on Tuesdays and Fridays, so please plan to spend a few hours with us. We so appreciate all of you! With Warm Regards, Don Jensen, Director
