The Tidings January 2012 A newsletter of Central Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity "Out with the old and in with the new" (note: / am revising a favorite newsletter article for this.isnusry' issue. It is quite ironic in light of its content. The more things change/ the more they stay the same... ) Dear Members and Friends of Central Lutheran Church, I am in the process of cleaning out myoid calendar. No, I am not like you organized folks who have the world in the palm (pilot) of your hand. No, I do not have all my appointments neatly in my head as do others of you. The fact is, as the year goes on, my "little red book", the complimentary pastor's calendar that I have received from Thrivent (formerly Lutheran Brotherhood) for the past 28 years becomes my "paper collector". It becomes a carry-around filing cabinet. It has doctor's notes, bills, sales coupons (ask me to lunch and I will most likely have a coupon available), course material, newsletters, you name it, it gets shoved into my calendar and carried around with me. So needless to say, my little red calendar gets very big and fat and unruly by the end of the year. It has often been the subject of incessant teasing when I go into a pastors' meeting. Okay, people, the truth of the matter is: I collect piles; I am (neatly) disorganized; I CARRY BAGGAGE. And now, as I transfer to my new 2012 calendar, I am forced to go through the piles - to either toss the paper, file it into its appropriate place, or - and this is way too ll"i~,7~ easy and not highly recommended-just shove all the old papers into the new calendar. Isn't that similar to what our lives entail? We may look at January 2012 and decide what it is we want to keep and what it is that needs to be "filed", what it is that really continued onpage 3...

January 2012/ Page 3 Note/rom Pastor Cindy Salo continued from the front page... needs to be tossed, what it is that we want to write into our new calendars, or into our lives that will be new and exciting and life-giving. In a sense that has been the process of our journey together the past 12 months. We decided what we needed to keep in 2011, what traditions and rules are precious or necessary for us and we re-incorporated them. We also look at what hasn't been working, what has not been beneficial as a congregation or necessary for our mission and we decide to make it new. We decide to incorporate new ideas, new vision, new hope. That is quite historical for us as Lutherans; always reforming to meet new needs. What's "new" for your 2012 calendar? Let me put a plug in for our new "Committee Sunday", now to be held after coffee hour on the first Sunday of the month (except for this month when it will be on the 8 th rather than New Year's Day). We hope to increase communication among committees, beginning each committee Sunday with some "cross talk" in terms of sharing what is on our agendas with one another. We hope you can join us, even just to "check out" what other committees are doing or what committee may be right for you to participate in this year. And then decide what else will be new for you: Add an exercise day? A new class or skill to learn? Maybe take away something that hasn't been working for you or that has ended up being valuable time down the drain. One lesson that life keeps teaching me is that in order to make room for the new, I have to let go of the old. I hate this lesson. It is at the very least, uncomfortable; in terms of relationships, downright painful. But I commit to making room for newness in my life this year of And I will continue to sort through papers and piles because that is what I do. But I will resist the temptation to just shove all the same stuff into the old calendar. Out with the old and in with the new. Easier said than done. Now back to my papers... Blessings and peace, Pastor Cindy

January 2012/ Page 4 News from Church Council Happy New Year Our last council meeting took place during Advent... we were waiting and preparing for Christmas. Our meeting was filled with wrap up items from 2011 and planning for the new year. Building use was a big topic in 2011, including space planning for a new staff person and meeting the needs of church programs and building use partners. We have reviewed our building use agreements with each of our three main building partners and have begun a process of getting them all into a similar structure and regular annual review. This process has been time consuming, but very important as it is slowly creating clarity around roles and responsibilities. Acknowledging that all of the groups that use our facility are important extensions of Central's mission in the world and that they serve important functions in our community, the council has also had to ensure that the financial and operational stewardship of the church is also being taken into account. This has been a thoughtful and thorough process and will be completed in the new year. The council and Property Committee have agreed to make the following space use changes: In the auxiliary office (room with copier), 3 work stations will be built. The new staff person will work in this space and LPF and CLCH have been invited to each have a work station. LPF will vacate the current space it is utilizing by March 31,2012 and that will be remodeled to accommodate a new meeting room with a sink and provide a storage for the pre-school. This will allow all the current preschool items in the upstairs "fireside room" to be removed and create 2 fully usable meeting/ class room (adult sized) spaces on the 2 nd story. The Property Committee is designing new storage spaces for CLCH to better house their supplies, store donated clothing, hygiene items and volunteers affects. In collaborating with CLCH, the Property Committee expects to not only create additional storage for CLCH, but to make it more centralized and accessible. These plans will be shared in detail at the Congregational meeting on January 22 and a funding request will be put before the congregation to transfer property enhancement funds to conduct these remodeling changes to the facilities. We also had an extensive discussion about our annual budget and areas in which we need to provide more resources in order to adequate support our ministry. Over the years the budget has been whittled down to the bare minimum. While this has been a prudent way of managing our finances especially in these difficult economic times it's not very sustainable for our future. Council decided to add additional funding in 2012 for staff training, technology, outreach, program supplies, and pastoral care coverage when our pastor is unavailable is also the first year of our new staff person and those costs are fully covered by a transfer from gifts and bequests. Beginning in 2013, the congregation will have to begin paying for a portion of these additional staffing costs. The reality is that we are going to continued on the following page...

January 2012/ Page 5 News from Church Council have to generate more pledges and/ or recruit additional households meet these increased expenses. that give regularly to Central to Lastly we talked about upcoming important congregational gatherings: Committee Sunday: Beginning on January 8 th and the first Sunday of the month thereafter, committees will gather at coffee hour to describe to the community what they will discuss and then break up into tables to hold their meetings. You are invited to bring a brown bag lunch and to welcome in noncommittee members who want to hear what your group is discussing. Personnel and Stewardship & Finance committees are the only two known committees that will meet at another time rather than the first Sunday. All others, unless otherwise noted, will utilize this schedule. Congregational Meeting: The annual meeting takes place on January 22 right after the service. The theme will be focused on celebrating our family heritage with food and dress. It will be a great opportunity to cover the main items of business (approve council members and budget for 2012) and enjoy food and fellowship. Respectfully, CoriMyka and Tom Donlea Council Co-Presidents How should we advance the life and mission of the church? Be a part of the future of Central! Beginning in January, a small group led by Karen Hoven is beginning to meet to determine how 80% of the Betty and Charles Haberman bequest should be spent to advance our mission at Central. If you recall, we had a similar process for the Mickelsen bequest that led to a $30,000 gift (spread over 3 years) to the Community Lunch on Capitol Hill and the creation and seed funding of our soon to be hired Coordinator ofintergenerational Ministries position. This group will begin with a meeting on January 7 th but will meet regularly over the first few months of Parish Council would like to have a recommendation from this group before May. If you are interested in joining this group, feel free to contact Cori Myka or Tom Donlea.

The Spirit irif Volume 29, Number 1 News for the congregations of the Northwest Washington Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America January 2012 A Good Creation Of God by The Rev. Wm Chris Boerger, Bishop In short, we confessed that legitimate civil ordinances are good creations of God and divine ordinances in which a Christian may safely take part. 1 Last November I participated in the annual visit of ELCA bishops with members of Congress and the White House staff in Washington D.C. This year I began my conversation with them by referencing Article 16 of the Augsburg Confession. I reminded them that Lutherans see government to be a good creation of God and as such working for the good of all creation and its creatures. Frankly that introduction seemed to catch those involved in government by surprise. In the middle of the partisan posturing that is occurring in halls of government this belief that those who are called to the vocation of leader are a gift from God is not part of our political dialog. As we begin a year that will be dominated by political campaigns and advertising, I pray that we might bring this understanding to our body politic. Understanding that good order and the common good is in fact a gift from God does change the way we talk about government. This does not mean that one side in our political debates can claim theirs is the God given position. Rather it sees the whole process and all of those we elect as stewards of a call from God for the good of all. I am convinced that we need to be reminded that as we think about the problems facing the world, our country, state or local community, we are part of something far beyond ourselves. God is at work in the world and we are called to share in that work. Luther defines the creative activity of God as not just calling the world into being, but also daily and abundantly provides shoes and clothing, food and drink, house and farm, spouse and children, fields, livestock, and all property along with all the necessities and nourishment for this body and life. 48 God protects me against all danger and shields and preserves me from all evil. And all this is done out of pure, fatherly, and divine goodness and mercy, without any merit or worthiness of mine at all! 1 The work of government is God s work. Government does not have the task of preaching the gospel. That is still the task of the church. Caring for the creation and for all people is the reason that God calls leaders to serve in government. So, as you exercise your political vocation this year, listen to how those running for office will exercise this call from God for the good of God s world. 1 Kolb, R The Book of Concord : The confessions of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. It is also an opportunity to take a step back from all the hustle and bustle of the season and to experience the peace of worship and prayer. Members of University Lutheran in Seattle are holding their annual Walk With The Magi on the Day of Epiphany (Friday, Jan. 6). They will gather for the Magi story at 6 p.m. at the church, followed by the journey of following the star to find baby Jesus.
