1 The Tidings December 2017 & January & February 2018 A newsletter of Central Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity Advent Waiting, Longing, Hoping, Anticipation.and those are just a few of the words to get us started on Advent. This morning in my YMCA pool workout, the instructor (next to me in the pool) was trying to explain to us exactly how to raise our hands and arms in the air while jogging. It s not about getting to the end; it s about being decisive and thoughtful while you re getting there. That s just not the kind of statement a preacher can leave alone! I looked at her and said, a nice metaphor for life, actually. And as we continued to huff and puff along, she smiled politely (that kind of smile that someone gives you when they have no idea what you are talking about, but they sure as heck don t want an explanation), and we continued our workout. Maybe keep that in mind as we journey together through Advent this year. What might it look like to be decisive and thoughtful and consider our actions rather than having our eye on some prize or become disillusioned when Advent seems to lumber along? I think we have all spent a year learning to do that. We look at the news every day, maybe with different glasses than we did a year ago. More gun violence (and churches are not exempt). More programs for the poor being threatened. People who are seen as different from those holding power being evicted from the country they have known for so long. Someone we may have respected (appropriately) losing their job due to allegations of abuse. I don t know about you, but for me, I m about fed up with waiting, hoping, longing, and anticipation. I love the Advent season, but it seems especially dark this year, in some ways as if we ve had over a year of yearning, not just four weeks. And then we are reminded that Christ came smack dab in the middle of our darkness. In the bleak midwinter, as the song goes. Christ comes into our world, our hearts, and our minds when we need him most. And then, then if we are being at all decisive and thoughtful, we notice what is on that journey. The hungry are fed. The poor are clothed. Those with little voice are heard. Advent is my favorite season because it is true to life. Not sugarcoated, but filled with hope. Embrace that hope, dear decisive and thoughtful people. And don t stop working out! Pastor Cindy

We also celebrated five wonderful young people who affirmed their baptisms as the final stage in their confirmation journeys. Theo Copley, Siri Donlea, Gabriella Johnson, David Kaiser, and Brodie Myka declared for themselves that they will live out the promises made for them by their parents and sponsors in their baptism and will continue to live out their faith in the church. Something to celebrate indeed! Christmas Camp - Saturday, December 9th from 10:00 am to noon Join us for Central Lutheran s annual Christmas Camp. Designed for young kids and their families, but open to everyone, this event combines a telling of the Advent story with crafts, cookie decorating, and pictures with Santa. Fun for the whole family! You do not have to be a member of our church (or any church for that matter) to come. (Note: All ages are welcome, but if you are not yet potty-trained, please bring a parent.)

7 December 2017, January and February 2018/ Page 7 Kids At Central Central s Annual Christmas Pageant - Sunday, December 17th at 11:00 am Central's Sunday School students will perform our annual Christmas pageant during the worship service on Sunday, December 17th. This year's offering is The Unfriendly Beasts (No Room in the Stable). It's a charming, humorous story of the manger animals who must share their crowded stable with Mary, Joseph, and the infant Jesus. When word first reaches the stable that the animals must make room for humans, the animals protest, and they indignantly post a "NO VACANCY" sign. But the Light of Salvation gradually illumines the stable darkness. Will the Unfriendly Beasts" come to welcome the baby Jesus? Will you? Lessons & Carols Sunday December 31 The 1 st Sunday of Christmas is a great time to RE-CONNECT with our Young Adults who have been off exploring the world. This of course can mean they re off at college, recently entered the workforce, or just haven t been able to make it to church lately. Whatever the reason, we invite them to come and help lead worship and then go to brunch and hear each other s stories. Please Brian Anderson at cim@loveiscentral.org if you have questions or would like to participate. We re Celebrating Epiphany on Sunday, January 7 Three things to Know! 1. Costumes! Epiphany, the 12 th day after Christmas, (Technically January 6, 2018) celebrates the visit of the three wise men to the Christ Child. We invite the children to dress up as a king or queen for a procession into worship. 2. Cake! Following worship we ll have a King s cake with a small baby Jesus hidden inside. The lucky person who gets the slice of cake containing the baby gets to make the King s cake for next year s Epiphany event. This year s cake will be provided by the Choi/Oversvee-Choi Family. 3. Wack the Star! During coffee hour there will be star piñata for kids 12 and under to strike and enjoy.

8 December 2017, January and February 2018/ Page 8 Faith Formation Forum Schedule Our Sunday mornings are a good time to come together to learn and share with one another. Please join us at 9:45 am in the Parish Hall and we ll have the coffee on. December 10 ~ #MeToo The news lately has been full of stories of powerful men losing their jobs because they sexually harassed their women co-workers. These have been stories of courageous women standing up to their abusers, of a society seemingly more willing than ever before to hold men accountable for their behavior toward women in the workplace, as well of denial and ham-handed pseudo apologies. In this forum, we will examine how pervasive sexual harassment in the American workplace was brought out of the shadows and we will ask two questions: #1) Why should this be one of the social justice issues we speak about in church? And #2) After so many changes in the law and decades of education on the subject, why hasn t sexual harassment disappeared? December 17 ~ Living the Questions 2.0 Session 8: Restoring Relationships. FOCUS: There are three biblical macro-stories that shape the whole of the biblical narrative: Bondage and Liberation, Exile and Return, and Sin and Forgiveness. Each representing a different facet of the human condition, they demonstrate what is necessary for the restoration of relationships on a variety of levels. December 24 ~ No forum December 31 ~ Café Central Join us for hot coffee and cool conversations in the Parish Hall. January 7 ~ Safe Injection Sites - Drug-use deaths in King County hit a record high of 332 last year, with two-thirds caused by heroin and other opioids. One proposed method for dealing with this crisis is through the establishment of safe injection sites. Such sites aim to reduce fatal overdoses through medical supervision and linkage to treatment, and offer people who use drugs an alternative to using in public locations. Advocates say they are just one of the tools needed to address a heroin and opiate crisis. Opponents say that they enable users and lead to more overdoses. Central s own Bjorn Payne and Jackie Brolsma will lead our discussion and help us find answers to our questions. January 14 ~ Living the Questions Session 9: The Prophetic Jesus. FOCUS: Jesus was a troublemaker. He said and did things that were upsetting to agents of the political and religious domination systems that oppressed the weak and downtrodden. In this way, Jesus stood firmly in the tradition of the prophets of Hebrew Scripture-those who offered a clear and challenging alternative script to the status quo. * January 21 ~ By Heart: Conversations with Martin Luther s Small Catechism - Lesson One: The Story of the Small Catechism. In this, the 500 th Anniversary of the beginning of the Reformation, we will be using a seven-lesson video and discussion study of Small Catechism - meant to be Martin Luther s authoritative statement of what Lutherans believe. January 28 ~ Café Central Join us for hot coffee and cool conversations in the Parish Hall. February 4 ~ Social Justice Forum Topic TBD

9 December 2017, January and February 2018/ Page 9 Faith Formation Forum Schedule * February 11 ~ By Heart: Conversations with Martin Luther s Small Catechism Lesson Two: The Ten Commandments. In this, the 500 th Anniversary of the beginning of the Reformation, we will be using a seven-lesson video and discussion study of Small Catechism meant to be Martin Luther s authoritative statement of what Lutherans believe. February 18 ~ Images of God: We will be viewing and discussing an episode of the television show This American Life called God s Close Up. The film features a devout Mormon artist whose paintings depict images from the life of Jesus using models the artist meets on the streets and how this project affects the people involved and the issues it brings up in them. * February 25 ~ By Heart: Conversations with Martin Luther s Small Catechism Lesson Three: The Apostle s Creed. In this, the 500 th Anniversary of the beginning of the Reformation, we will be using a seven-lesson video and discussion study of Small Catechism meant to be Martin Luther s authoritative statement of what Lutherans believe. * Intergenerational forum. Confirmation students to attend. 15 . A. Important Working Together, Let s Make a Difference! A message of hope for Central colleagues friends! yes, Peace! Central has long worked on peace and justice concerns. Lutheran Peace Fellowship has been a helpful partner, e.g. offering inspiring, useful resources in each of its major program areas (A,B,C,D) carefully presented to: Encourage the blossoming of faith in action pursue achievable goals on issues that matter collaborate with other faith-based peace groups... B. Global Issues, War, Militarism Oppose US military involvement in Syria, etc.; threats to North Korea Work to cut bloated military spending like a $1.2 trillion upgrade to our nuclear arsenal, and 1000 foreign military bases! Expose Israeli destruction of Palestinian villages in order to build illegal Israeli settlements. Counter efforts to suppress opposition to such actions, e.g. making boycotts and other BDS activity illegal and thus criminalizing free speech fellowship It often works best to engage issues like these with others in your congregation in a committee or informal group... Share and discuss information and action ideas from the most reliable sources, e.g. various links offered here, esp. wider-ranging ones like: ELCA Advocacy, Fellowship of Reconciliation, LPF LPF blog and Facebook posts, resources, and forum leaders guides explore virtually all of these issues. LPF volunteers have done heroic work rebuilding our website to be more accessible, especially on tablets & phones. Take a look: Biblical Peacemaking, Nonviolence. Encourage youth and adult forums on the untapped power of what our faith offers us as peacemakers LPF s Shalom! essay and What is Christian Peacemaking group activity can open a door to insight and inspiration! Help participants explore ways to grow in their advocacy, leadership, and daily life LPF s 11 discussion guides can really help! Join efforts of the ecumenical Campaign Nonviolence in 2018, building to the Sept. Week of Actions. In 2014 there were 240 vigils protests forums in one week. In 2016: 760! In 2017: 1600 all around the U.S.! See: D. Justice Issues:. in their own right, and often a cause or consequence of violence and conflict: Hunger, Poverty As so many biblical texts implore us: Feed the hungry! That means providing food and also advocacy on the key underlying causes: LPF, Bread for the World, ELCA Advocacy Climate Change Help others see the urgent need for action, as asserted in a Nov. report by 13 U.S. agencies, and a call by 15,000 scientists on the peril we face! reported by almost every major news outlet Simple living is part of the solution. Explore, practice, and share creative, simpler choices for gifts and everyday living at Christmas, and throughout the year, e.g. For help in making the most of your efforts, feel encouraged to contact us: LPF, th Ave., Seattle, WA 98122, , lpf@ecunet.org LPF Update, Dec. 2017, please share! skill-building At a time when so many people feel discouraged and disempowered, a notable and hopeful focus for us is strengthening relevant justice and peacemaking skills: Building effective social change groups grassroots organizing leadership and nonviolence skills... reaching out to audiences new to peacemaking... countering the dominant corporate media messages taking on fairness issues like voter suppression and gerrymandering. C. Community Conflict and Violence Support Conflict Education in our schools, churches, youth groups... that taps the best insights & resources, e.g. LPF s Conflict Education, or End Violence Against Women, both physical & emotional So many women have come forth recently about abuse by public figures: is now a time to make real progress? See LPF s Women s Resources. Oppose Militarization of Police, e.g. inappropriate military equipment fostering a climate allowing aggressive action targeting of people of color leadership Engaging issues like these can help us reach out to others, offer meaningful activity and encouragement, and take on other supportive leadership roles. For example, we invite you to vote on a candidate for our national board: Doug Jacobson. He is a leader in a new local LPF chapter at Holy Spirit Luth. Church (Kirkland, WA). His professional experience and skills as a City Administrator and Public Works Director, and extensive nonprofit involvement point to what he has to offer with LPF (submit ballot before Jan. 7).
