The Tidings December 2014 A newsletter of Central Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions ~ Dalai Lama As I think about what makes people happy, I can t help but think of music and Pharrell William s single Happy! Defined as a midtempo soul song on which Williams falsetto voice has been compared to Curtis Mayfield by critics. The song has been highly successful, peaking at number one in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, and 19 other countries. It has sold over 5.6 million copies in the United States [3][4] and over 1.65 million copies in the United Kingdom, [5] and has reached number one in the latter on a record three separate occasions. With worldwide sales of 10 million copies, [6] it has become one of the best-selling singles of all time. ( If you want to hear the song on repeat you can go to and watch different people walk up and down the street to the song with plenty of smiles and snazzy moves. Music is one way in which we as humans experience happiness, but there is a little more to being happy than just listening to a catchy song. As I read article after article and watched a couple of documentaries ( and I came to a realization that happiness is most definitely linked to relationships and empathy for others. Not surprisingly, the message is that money, social status, and power don t make us happy. Study after study shows that humans are social creatures and find joy, love, and all those feel good emotions through a deep connection with others. Technically defined as intrinsic goals, when people focus on actions that result in personal growth, relationship with others, and helping the community they are more likely to experience happiness. continued on page 3...

December 2014/ Page 3 News from CIM continued from the front page... I bring up this topic, because a) I ve been thinking a lot lately about what makes me happy and b) I think December can be a stressful month with the seemingly endless list of obligations. Considering these two things, the Dalai Lama quote at the top of the article and all I ve learned in my research, I plan to do a few things this December. 1. Volunteer alongside as many Central folks as my schedule allows with the Community Lunch on Capitol Hill. 2. Have fun decorating cookies at Christmas Camp with people of all ages on December 13 th! 3. Find out what makes people hopeful during the season of Advent on Sunday mornings. 4. Be intentional about spending time with my friends and having shared experiences! Since Advent is a season of hope and knowing that I am only a flawed human being, I will ask God for the grace, guidance, and patience to be present and loving in all of my good intentions. May all of us at Central be happy and hopeful as we anticipate Christ s birth! Blessings, David De Block Coordinator of Intergenerational Ministries

December 2014/ Page 4 News from Church Council The days are getting shorter and the weather less appealing, which naturally leads us to a time of reflection on who we are, where we are, and what we ve got to be proud of and thankful for. Luckily for us at Central, there has been much to celebrate this year: this summer s mission trip to Mexico, our new sign, another fantastic year of spiritual growth through Sunday school, faith formation forum, confirmation and youth group, and the theology book group, the passage of I-594, and the continued opportunity to come together as members both new and not-so-new. I have no doubt that December will bring other opportunities for us to celebrate our vibrant and bright community (and I m sure I ve missed plenty of exciting things that have happened this year!) However, the darkness that we encounter during the season of Advent reminds us that although we often would prefer to stay in the light and warmth, darkness is also an important part of our spiritual journey and growth. God is with us, even when we face difficult times - especially when we face difficult times. At this month s council meeting, we spent a significant amount of time discussing the 2015 budget. We are facing another year of significant deficit in our budget and we will need to make some tough decisions about how we would like to fund our ministry in the coming years. These discussions aren t easy; it is tempting to ignore these questions and hope that it will take care of itself. However, this conversation affords us a great opportunity to grow as a community. What is important for us to fund as a community? What is meaningful for us to offer? We can believe that everything will work out (and we do believe that it will) but still engage in these difficult talks - they will help us know each other better and grow in a way that feels right for us as a congregation. There will be plenty of opportunities to come together as a community and celebrate who we are as Central: the Christmas pageant and the evening variety show event are two coming up in December. In January we ll get to business talking a little more about the budget, and we ll try to make sure that we can focus the conversation so that we are really getting at what matters: what do we want our community to look like in 2015 and beyond? And how should we get there? Erica Hieggelke and Chris Kealy, Congregational Co-Presidents

Some of the things we ve discussed involve making sure that we do background checks annually, replace the Fireside Room door with a glass one, and have healthy relationship trainings with our Confirmands and Youth Group with a Planned Parenthood Educator. We d also like to know if there is parental interest where parents of young children can come together and share ideas/language they use to teach their children about their bodies and selves. How do we teach our kids in a Christian context about the gifts God has given them? If you have ideas or would like to learn more, please feel free to contact any of the members of the KAC Committee! 8 December 2014/ Page 8 Kids At Central Elementary Lutherwood Overnight Putting it on your Radar! For the last couple of years a group of Parents and Elementary Kids have been going to Lutherwood for a 24 hour retreat. Open to 1 st through 6 th graders, this opportunity has been a great introduction to camp and chance to bond with fellow Centralities outside of the weekly ritual of Sunday School and Worship. Typically this event has been organized by a parent with kids in this age range. Not only enriching for the elementary students, parents have found that this 24 hours is a way to bond with fellow parents. Please prayerfully consider putting this on your agenda and let me know if you d like more information. You can me at cim@loveiscentral.org. Blessings, David De Block Coordinator of Intergenerational Ministries

December 2014/ Page 9 Kids At Central Carriers of the Light Central s Christmas Pageant Our Sunday School children and youth will perform Carriers of the Light by Anna Laura Page and Jean Anne Shafferman. This Pageant is a children s Christmas musical inspired by scriptural passages from Isaiah, Matthew, and Luke focusing on Jesus as the Light of Salvation. It celebrates the passing of God s Light, from Mary to Joseph to the animals in the manger, from the shepherds in the countryside to the wise men in the east. An annual highlight of the Advent season, please join us on December 21, 2014 during 11 am Worship. Invite your friends and family to this event and share the joy of seeing our kids present the Christmas Story under the direction of our Pageant Director Jonna Farley.

December 2014/ Page 12 Kids At Central We re Celebrating Epiphany Sunday, January 4, 2015 Three things to Know! 1. Costumes! Epiphany, the 12th day after Christmas, (Technically January 6 th, 2015) celebrates the visit of the three wise men to the Christ Child. We invite the children to dress up as a king or queen for a procession into worship. 2. Cake! Following worship we ll have a King s cake with a small baby Jesus hidden inside. The lucky person who gets the slice of cake containing the baby gets to make the King s cake for next year s Epiphany event. 3. Wack the Star! During coffee hour there will be star piñata for kids 12 and under to strike and enjoy.

a December 2014/ Page 13. Faith Formation Forum Schedule Our Sunday mornings are a good time to come together to learn and share with one another. Please join us at 9:45 am in the Parish Hall and we ll have the coffee on. December 7 - As Central once again provides volunteers to serve the Community Lunch on Capitol Hill this December, we will be joined by CLCH Executive Director Don Jensen who will update us on all things Community Lunch. We will also have an opportunity to discuss some of the latest news involving hunger in our community and see how Central's long-standing commitment to serving those in need is helping struggling folks in our neighborhood. December 14 & 21 - Join us for a two part Advent devotional and book study using Barbara Brown Taylor's Learning to Walk in the Dark. Advent provides us with an opportunity to learn from the darkness that surrounds us. Taylor's book plunges headlong into that dark space, looking for the spiritual lessons that we miss when we immerse ourselves exclusively in the light. As usual, no need to read the book ahead of time! December 28 - Café Central - Join us for hot coffee and cool conversations in the Parish Hall. It s hard to believe that 2015 is just around the corner! If you would like to sign up to bring communion bread for a month in 2015, please let Sandy know. You can either bring a fresh loaf each Sunday or bring enough loaves for the month and put them in the freezer. Sandy will then make sure a loaf is thawed for each Sunday. You can either call the office or e- mail Sandy at office@loveiscentral.org. There will also be a sign-up sheet at coffee hour. Thanks for your consideration!

December 2014/ Page 16 Introducing Central s new Music Director James Jelasic Now an International Steinway Artist, James Jelasic, by the age of nineteen, had twice been featured as a concerto soloist with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. He received his Master of Music degree in piano accompanying/vocal coaching from the University of Michigan. James resided and performed for a year in Munich under the gracious patronage of the Richard Strauss Family. He then moved to Paris as a Fulbright Scholar. The BBC, Radio France, WGMS in Washington, D.C., and PBS Television have broadcast several of his performances live. His recordings (WatersEdgeRecords.com) have garnered three semi-final GRAMMY nominations. While classically grounded, James musical interests extend to traditional American Ballroom Dance Music with his Society Dance Band and as a soloist nationally. He was formerly the Minister of Music at the Historic Falls Church Episcopal in Virginia, where George Washington was on the original vestry. James husband, tenor, Jon Lackey, is the Minister of Music at Peace Lutheran in West Seattle. Currently residing in metropolitan Seattle, James is active as a performer, accompanist/vocal coach, and piano teacher. He is looking forward to working at Central Lutheran with the church staff, the choirs and the welcoming congregation!

December 2014/ Page 18 For Your Consideration A SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM COLUMBIA CITY CHURCH OF HOPE: Columbia City Church of Hope: Winter Retreat: Soul-Tending in Times of Transition Where: Columbia City Church of Hope 3818 S Angeline St. Seattle, WA When: Saturday, December 6, :30 am to 4 pm (half-day option: 8:30 to noon) What: Do you find yourself in the midst of transition and in need of some direction? Transition is the process we undergo when we encounter change. Changes such as: starting a new job or school, moving to a new place, making a commitment to a life partner, welcoming a new member into our family, or grieving some loss. In between the letting go of the old and taking hold of the new, we find ourselves in the neutral zone which can be chaotic, but can also provide an opportunity for us to look at our lives through a new lens. Join Dr. Joe Sherman, pediatrician and veteran retreat leader, and Philip Pascual, a new counselling psychology student at The Seattle School, as we explore how to tend to our souls while we navigate these transitions and come to know ourselves more fully. Details: A light continental breakfast and lunch will be provided. This is a free offering with a suggested donation of $20. Please RSVP to Philip (pjpascual.ccch@gmail.com)!
